Reduced neural integration of letters and speech sounds links phonological and reading deficits in adult dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a specific reading and spelling deficit affecting 4% to 10% of the population. Advances in understanding its origin support a core deficit in phonological processing characterized by difficulties in segmenting spoken words into their minimally discernable speech segments (speech sounds, or phonemes) and underactivation of left superior temporal cortex. A suggested but unproven hypothesis is that this phonological deficit impairs the ability to map speech sounds onto their homologous visual letters, which in turn prevents the attainment of fluent reading levels. The pr

Longitudinal Exploration of Auditory Sensory-Perceptual Processing in CLN3 Disease (Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (Batten disease)): A High-Density Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP) Study.

BACKGROUND: There is currently limited information about sensory and perceptual abilities across the progression of CLN3 disease (Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis; Batten disease), a recessively inherited lysosomal storage disorder and a leading cause of childhood neurodegeneration. Clinical symptoms include vision loss, motor impairments, and cognitive challenges, making it difficult to accurately assess neurocognitive and perceptual abilities. Thus, there is a critical need to identify objective biomarkers that can be used to inform disease progression and track treatment response in

The dimensionality of perceptual anomalies and their relationships with bullying victimization among Chinese adolescents: From a network perspective.

Anomalous perceptual experiences in adolescents are common and may predict future psychotic disorders and other psychopathologies. However, the underlying structure and their specific relationships with bullying victimizations, a typical stressor for adolescents, remain unclear. Therefore, the current study aimed to clarify the structure of perceptual anomalies as assessed by the Cardiff Anomalous Perceptions Scale (CAPS) using exploratory graph analysis (EGA), a new factor retention method based on network psychometrics. The second aim was to explore whether specific dimensions of perceptual

From genes to behavior in developmental dyslexia.

All four genes thus far linked to developmental dyslexia participate in brain development, and abnormalities in brain development are increasingly reported in dyslexia. Comparable abnormalities induced in young rodent brains cause auditory and cognitive deficits, underscoring the potential relevance of these brain changes to dyslexia. Our perspective on dyslexia is that some of the brain changes cause phonological processing abnormalities as well as auditory processing abnormalities; the latter, we speculate, resolve in a proportion of individuals during development, but contribute early on to

Auditory backward masking deficits in children with reading disabilities.

Studies evaluating temporal auditory processing among individuals with reading and other language deficits have yielded inconsistent findings due to methodological problems () and sample differences. In the current study, seven auditory masking thresholds were measured in fifty-two 7- to 10-year-old children (26 diagnosed with reading disability [RD], 26 without reading disability). Hierarchic multiple regression analyses indicated that RD status predicted performance only in the backward-bandpass noise (p<.05) and backward notched-noise conditions (p<.05), suggesting both temporal and spectra

Neuroanatomical differences in brain areas implicated in perceptual and other core features of autism revealed by cortical thickness analysis and voxel-based morphometry.

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental variant thought to affect 1 in 166 [Fombonne (2003): J Autism Dev Disord 33:365-382]. Individuals with autism demonstrate atypical social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors, but can also present enhanced abilities, particularly in auditory and visual perception and nonverbal reasoning. Structural brain differences have been reported in autism, in terms of increased total brain volume (particularly in young children with autism), and regional gray/white matter differences in both adults and children with autism, but the

Survey of students and guardians for assessing the early detection of auditory processing disorder and listening difficulties in school-age students.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory processing disorders (APD) and listening difficulties (LiD) are becoming increasingly prevalent in young adults. Our study surveyed students and their guardians to assess the early detection of APD and LiDs in students aged 6-18 years. We estimated the percentage of students with LiDs and assessed their guardians' perceptions during different school years. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled students from schools affiliated with Osaka Kyoiku University and their guardians. Both students and their guardians completed a basic assessment on demographics, and a questionna

The role of automatic orienting of attention towards ipsilesional stimuli in non-visual (tactile and auditory) neglect: a critical review.

The aim of the present survey was to review scientific articles dealing with the non-visual (auditory and tactile) forms of neglect to determine: (a) whether behavioural patterns similar to those observed in the visual modality can also be observed in the non-visual modalities; (b) whether a different severity of neglect can be found in the visual and in the auditory and tactile modalities; (c) the reasons for the possible differences between the visual and non-visual modalities. Data pointing to a contralesional orienting of attention in the auditory and the tactile modalities in visual negle

[Auditory processing disorders : Consensus statement by the German Society for Phoniatry and Paedaudiology].

The consensus statement published by the German Society for Phoniatry and Paedaudiology in the year 2000 has been revised and actualized. The revised version takes into account current scientific and clinical findings. Aspects of the definition of auditory processing disorders (APD) are described extensively. These include symptoms, anamnestic information and diagnostic steps (preliminary examinations, subjective and objective audiological procedures). APD can appear in different forms, some of which can be classified within subtypes. Furthermore, factors which need to be considered in order t

Which People with Specific Language Impairment have Auditory Processing Deficits?

An influential theory attributes developmental disorders of language and literacy to low-level auditory perceptual difficulties. However, evidence to date has been inconsistent and contradictory. We investigated whether this mixed picture could be explained in terms of heterogeneity in the language-impaired population. In Experiment 1, the behavioural responses of 16 people with specific language impairment (SLI) and 16 control listeners (aged 10 to 19 years) to auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) stimuli and unmasked tones indicated that a subgroup of people with SLI are less able to

Human evoked potentials and the lateralization of a sound.

If an identical noise is presented to each ear with one ear receiving the noise slightly earlier than the other, the listener perceives the sound as originating from the side of the leading ear. If the interaural time-difference reverses, the subject perceives a shift in the lateralization of the sound to the other ear. This shift in lateralization evokes a late auditory potential with a negative wave at 135 ms and positive waves at 75 and 220 ms. This evoked potential specifically indexes central auditory processing since information about the timing of the auditory stimuli must be compared b

The development of multisensory integration in high-functioning autism: high-density electrical mapping and psychophysical measures reveal impairments in the processing of audiovisual inputs.

Successful integration of auditory and visual inputs is crucial for both basic perceptual functions and for higher-order processes related to social cognition. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social cognition and are associated with abnormalities in sensory and perceptual processes. Several groups have reported that individuals with ASD are impaired in their ability to integrate socially relevant audiovisual (AV) information, and it has been suggested that this contributes to the higher-order social and cognitive deficits observed in ASD. However, successful

Malformation of the superior olivary complex in an animal model of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social difficulties, impaired communication skills and repetitive behavioral patterns. Additionally, there is evidence that auditory deficits are a common feature of the autism spectrum disorders. Despite the prevalence of autism, the neurobiology of this disorder is poorly understood. However, abnormalities in neuronal morphology, cell number and connectivity have been described throughout the autistic brain. Indeed, we have demonstrated significant dysmorphology in the superior olivary complex (SOC), a collection of auditory brainstem

Assessment of cochlear electrophysiology in typically developing children and children with auditory processing disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Children with auditory processing disorder (APD) are reported to have abnormal auditory brainstem responses (ABR) but little is understood about their cochlear integrity. Poor cochlear integrity can affect neural responses. In this study, cochlear and auditory brainstem integrity was investigated in children with APD. METHOD: Twenty children with APD, sixteen typically developing children and twenty adults participated in this study. Click evoked electrocochleography (ECochG) and ABRs were recorded from all the participants. Cochlear responses were analyzed using a) latency and amp
