Non-invasive auditory brainstem response measurements in an unanesthetized Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti).

Hearing thresholds are vital for assessing anthropogenic noise impacts on animals, yet commonly used electrophysiological techniques can pose welfare concerns from invasive electrodes and required anesthesia. This study investigated if auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were measurable via surface electrodes from an unanesthetized Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti). Successful ABR recordings generated thresholds between 36 and 41 dB re 20 μPa rms to click stimuli centered at 2 kHz, similar to previous data from penguins and other diving birds. This provides proof-of-concept that non-inva

A Robust Extraction Approach of Auditory Brainstem Response Using Adaptive Kalman Filtering Method.

OBJECTIVE: The Auditory brainstem response (ABR) can provide valuable information on the function of the auditory pathway. However, the ABR signal has a very small amplitude, and it is easily submerged in different background noises with large amplitude. Conventional ABR extraction methods such as time-domain averaging (TDA) and Kalman filter (KF) were greatly affected by noise intensity, and the result relies on the empirical settings of parameters. ABR extraction method that can automatically adjust parameters to adapt different background noises was needed. METHODS: An adaptive Kalman filt

A crew of listeners with no more than "slight" hearing loss who exhibit binaural deficits also exhibit reduced amounts of binaural interference.

Listeners having, at most, "slight" hearing loss, specifically those having absolute thresholds at 4 kHz exceeding 7.5 dB HL, have been shown to exhibit deficits in binaural detection that appear to stem from increased levels of stimulus-dependent, additive internal noise [Bernstein and Trahiotis (2016). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 140, 3540-3548; Bernstein and Trahiotis (2018). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 144, 292-307]. This study assessed whether such listeners exhibit greater susceptibility to "binaural interference." NoSo and NoSπ tone-in-noise detection thresholds were measured for stimuli centered at 4

The effect of oxygen inhalation on temporary threshold shift in humans.

To examine the effects of an increased oxygen supply on the establishment of noise-induced TTS in humans, 20 Ss were exposed for 10 min to a narrow band of noise centered at 3 kc/s at 100 db SPL, while inhaling either a 60% or a 90% oxygen-air mixture. In a control condition, these Ss inhaled air only while being subjected to the same noise. In the 10 Ss who had inhaled the 90% mixture, TTS was less than when they had inhaled air (delta TTS - 2.06 db, p less than 0.25). Delta TTS (0.07 db) for the 10 Ss who inhaled the 60% mixture was not significant. A further 5 Ss inhaled the 90% mixture for

Non-simultaneous auditory masking in the goldfish, Carassius auratus.

Auditory thresholds were determined for 500 HZ pure tone pulses of 15, 25 and 50 ms duration presented leading, following or simultaneously with noise pulses of 50 or 250 ms duration. Masking by the noise decreased: (i) with an increase in tone pulse duration; (ii) with a shortening of the noise pulse duration; and (iii) as the interval between tone and noise pulses was increased from 0 to 350 ms. The effect of the noise was independent of whether the noise led or followed the pure tone. It is suggested that the most significant factor affecting masking was the duration of the interval between

Metabolic presbycusis: differential changes in auditory brainstem and otoacoustic emission responses with chronic furosemide application in the gerbil.

Auditory characteristics of metabolic or strial presbycusis were investigated using an animal model in which young adult Mongolian gerbils ( Meriones unguiculates) were implanted with an osmotic pump supplying furosemide continuously to the round window. This model causes chronic lowering of the endocochlear potential (EP) and results in auditory responses very similar to those seen in quiet-aged gerbils (Schmiedt et al., J. Neurosci. 22:9643-9650, 2002). Auditory function was examined up to one week post-implant by measurement of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and distortion product otoa

Childhood autism and auditory system abnormalities.

Hearing disorders are common among children with autism, ranging from peripheral and sensorineural hearing deficit or loss to auditory hypersensitivity with bizarre reactions to sounds. The auditory abnormalities and consequent sensory deprivation exacerbate the communication deficit of autism, and early auditory assessment holds an important place in the planning of intervention and the overall prognosis of patients. Physiologic, pathologic, imaging, and neurochemical studies have revealed an array of aberrations in the perception and processing of the audiologic stimuli, including (among oth

[Audiological observations of a patient with auditory agnosia].

A case is reported in which a patient was become unable to identify all kinds of auditory material, including speech, despite only subnormal audiometric thresholds (i.e. "auditory agnosia"). The following audiological disorders were shown: some fragility in the perception of brief sound stimuli, difficulties to apprehending prolonged series of stimuli (rhythms), defective sound localization, an increase in the homolateral and in the contralateral effects of masking sounds. On the other hand, differential thresholds for frequency and for intensity, as well as fusion thresholds, were little affe

Adaptive testing in audiology.

A general approach to adaptive testing of the up-down type is described. Audiological applications of the procedure are described, including measurement of the auditory threshold, estimating the spread of the subject's response curve, testing for sequential response dependencies, and finding PB-max. Guidelines are provided for the practical implementation of these procedures using relatively simple rules for controlling stimulus levels and for estimating the parameters of interest. Also described is the Simplical Method, a multivariate adaptive procedure which, like the transformed up-down met

Sensory processing in the auditory and olfactory domains is normal in laryngeal dystonia.

Abnormal sensory discriminatory processing has been implicated as an endophenotypic marker of isolated dystonia. However, the extent of alterations across the different sensory domains and their commonality in different forms of dystonia are unclear. Based on the previous findings of abnormal temporal but not spatial discrimination in patients with laryngeal dystonia, we investigated sensory processing in the auditory and olfactory domains as potentially additional contributors to the disorder pathophysiology. We tested auditory temporal discrimination and olfactory function, including odor id

Distortion product emissions and sensorineural hearing loss.

Distortion product emissions (DPEs) are intimately linked to normal outer hair cell function. Outer hair cell function is itself intimately linked with normal auditory thresholds. We sought to correlate frequency-specific DPE measurements with auditory thresholds, in seven frequency regions from 700 Hz to 6 kHz, in each of 21 ears. Eleven of these ears had thresholds below 25 dB SPL at every test frequency, whereas 10 ears demonstrated some degree of purely sensorineural hearing loss. An analysis of the correlation between DPE measurements and sensory thresholds suggests that DPE measures can

Functional Age-Related Changes Within the Human Auditory System Studied by Audiometric Examination.

Age related hearing loss (presbycusis) is one of the most common sensory deficits in the aging population. The main subjective ailment in the elderly is the deterioration of speech understanding, especially in a noisy environment, which cannot solely be explained by increased hearing thresholds. The examination methods used in presbycusis are primarily focused on the peripheral pathologies (e.g., hearing sensitivity measured by hearing thresholds), with only a limited capacity to detect the central lesion. In our study, auditory tests focused on central auditory abilities were used in addition

The one-up one-down adaptive (staircase) procedure in speech-in-noise testing: Standard error of measurement and fluctuations in the track.

The one-up one-down adaptive (staircase or up-down) procedure is often used to estimate the speech recognition threshold (SRT) in speech-in-noise testing. This article provides a brief historical overview of the one-up one-down procedure in psychophysics, discussing the groundbreaking early work that is still relevant to clinical audiology and scientific research. Next, this article focuses on two aspects of the one-up one-down adaptive procedure: first, the standard error of measurement (SEM) and, second, the fluctuations in the track [i.e., the standard deviation of the signal-to-noise ratio

[Objective frequency-specific measurement of hearing threshold using narrow-band chirp stimuli with level-adaptive simultaneous masking].

BACKGROUND: In the past, various simulation and measurement paradigms have been introduced and evaluated in order to improve frequency-specific measurement of the hearing threshold using early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP). A promising approach for improvement of detection of stimulus response is the usage of frequency-modulated chirp signals, which optimize the temporal synchrony of neuronal responses along a region of the basilar membrane. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study validated the performance of three generated narrow-band chirp stimuli in combination with a level-adaptive simultaneous

Addressing animal model issues in auditory research.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the differences in auditory systems across species. METHODS: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) click thresholds were obtained from normal 3- to 6-week-old animals including 15 guinea pigs, 62 mice, and 6 rats. Pure-tone ABR thresholds were obtained in 7 guinea pigs, 6 mice, and 13 rats. Threshold variability was then considered a function of basilar membrane length, mean body weight, basal metabolic rate, and longevity as identified in the literature. RESULTS: Interspecies variability of auditory thresholds for normal-hearing animals is not explained by differ
