Digitalization of surgical features improves surgical accuracy via surgeon guidance and robotization.

The evolution of surgical techniques aims to augment surgeons' capabilities through digital guidance and robotization for higher precision and consistency. Currently, surgeries heavily rely on surgeon's experience and visual judgment, causing operation variations. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a solution by extracting and digitizing surgical trajectories and features from videos to provide digital guidance. In this study, we collected 17,538 videos of capsulorhexis, a crucial step in cataract surgery, to create an AI-driven system named Meta Surgery (MetaS). MetaS evaluates and identifie

Design and Simulation Study of a Jumping Takeoff Mechanism Inspired by the Hindleg Kinematics of Asian Migratory Locust, Locusta migratoria.

The legs of flying insects play a critical role in enabling seamless transitions between aerial and terrestrial environments. These appendages serve multiple functions, including landing, walking, jumping, and transitioning from jumping to flight (takeoff). Such capabilities have inspired engineers to seek similar multimodal mechanisms in Flapping-Wing Aerial Robots (FWARs) to expand their operational versatility across diverse environments. However, designing multimodal mechanisms with distinct kinematic and propulsive characteristics remains challenging, particularly in the domain of autonom

Evolutionary autonomous agents and the nature of apraxia.

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary autonomous agents are robots or robot simulations whose controller is a dynamical neural network and whose evolution occurs autonomously under the guidance of a fitness function without the detailed or explicit direction of an external programmer. They are embodied agents with a simple neural network controller and as such they provide the optimal forum by which sensorimotor interactions in a specified environment can be studied without the computational assumptions inherent in standard neuroscience. METHODS: Evolutionary autonomous agents were evolved that were able

Development of a colon endoscope robot that adjusts its locomotion through the use of reinforcement learning.

PURPOSE: Fibre optic colonoscopy is usually performed with manual introduction and advancement of the endoscope, but there is potential for a robot capable of locomoting autonomously from the rectum to the caecum. A prototype robot was designed and tested. METHODS: The robot colonic endoscope consists in a front body with clockwise helical fin and a rear body with anticlockwise one, both connected via a DC motor. Input voltage is adjusted automatically by the robot, through the use of reinforcement learning, determining speed and direction (forward or backward). RESULTS: Experiments were per

Virtual-AMR LiDAR Fusion for AMCL Localization Under Mutual Occlusion.

When autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) travel in formation, mutual occlusion reduces the map features available to adaptive Monte Carlo localization (AMCL) and introduces robot body returns. This study proposes a Virtual-AMR LiDAR fusion method that transforms synchronized 2D scans into a common frame, tracks robot contours, estimates relative pose by KD-tree overlap matching, removes robot returns, and fuses environmental measurements for AMCL. The method was evaluated using two AMRs in a 3.1 m × 10 m indoor area with 4 m straight-line and turning trajectories. Four branch-wise configurations w

Advancing minimally invasive precision surgery in large open cavities with robotic flexible endoscopy.

Flexible robots hold great promise for enhancing minimally invasive surgery (MIS) by providing superior dexterity, precise control, and safe tissue interaction. Yet, translating these advantages into endoscopic interventions in large open cavities remains challenging. The lack of anatomical constraints and the inherent flexibility of such devices complicate their control, and the limited field of view of endoscopes restricts situational awareness. We present a robotic platform designed to overcome these challenges and demonstrate its potential in fetoscopic laser coagulation-a complex MIS proc

Differences in coordination between dominant and non-dominant hands in tele-operation.

The intuitive tele-operation of industrial robot arms is necessary for the teaching of autonomous movement. We developed a novel interface, namely the iFeel Desktop Haptic Device, for operating robots intuitively. However, when a user uses two interfaces with two hands, there are differences in coordination between the dominant and non-dominant hands. In this paper, we investigated the differences in coordination between dominant and non-dominant hands using two devices for the development of cooperative control. In an experiment, when the participants manipulated the two interfaces to operate

Exchanging implements: the micro-materialities of multidisciplinary work in the operating theatre.

Surgical procedures rely upon an array of commonplace tools, implements and materials that mediate practice and disciplinary collaboration within the operating theatre. Substantial time is dedicated to the issue and provision of these artefacts and their timely exchange is critical to the successful accomplishment of surgical procedures. In this article, we consider the practice, knowledge and agency that informs how particular implements and materials are passed by the scrub nurse to the surgeon that in turn enables their deployment with regard to the particular procedure and the contingencie

A Robotic Ultrasound System for Automated Abdominal Aorta Screening: Feasibility Study in Healthy Volunteers.

Ultrasound is safe, portable, and relatively low cost, and robotic ultrasound research is expanding across many diagnostic applications. Within this context, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening remains comparatively unexplored, with few systems reporting end-to-end autonomous scanning and clinician-validated evaluation in volunteers. We present a conditionally autonomous (Level-3) robotic ultrasound system in which the operator defines the region of interest and confirms the target force band, after which the robot performs surface-constrained abdominal sweeps under force control and aut

Towards the development of robot immune system: A combined approach involving innate immune cells and T-lymphocytes.

Mobile robots in uncertain and unstructuredenvironments frequently encounter faults. Therefore, an effective fault detection and recovery mechanism is required. One can possibly investigate natural systems to seek inspiration to develop systems that can handle such faults. Authors, in this pursuit, have explored the possibility of designing an artificial immune system, called Robot Immune System (RIS), to maintain a robot's internal health-equilibrium. This contrasts with existing approaches in which specific robotic tasks are performed instead of developing a self-healing robot. In this respe

State space navigation using geometrically symmetric inflatables.

Soft robots rely on continuous control to achieve complex functionality. Their autonomous behavior is currently limited by a lack of embodied computation and the ability to store information of past events. Inflatable soft actuators typically relax once pressure is removed and, thus, do not exhibit state-space behavior when combined. As a result, rather than embodying memory and logic, inflatable soft robots implement these functions in software. Prior work has shown that mechanical instabilities can endow soft structures with discrete states, yet accessing all possible combinations of states

Robotic Autonomy for Magnetic Endoscope Biopsy.

Magnetically actuated endoscopes are currently transitioning in to clinical use for procedures such as colonoscopy, presenting numerous benefits over their conventional counterparts. Intelligent and easy-to-use control strategies are an essential part of their clinical effectiveness due to the un-intuitive nature of magnetic field interaction. However, work on developing intelligent control for these devices has mainly been focused on general purpose endoscope navigation. In this work, we investigate the use of autonomous robotic control for magnetic colonoscope intervention via biopsy, anothe

Agile perceptive multiskill locomotion for quadrupedal robots in the wild.

Enabling quadrupedal robots to traverse complex terrains, from rugged outdoor environments to urban landscapes, requires seamless integration of multiple motor skills, smooth transitions between gaits, and high-speed perceptive locomotion using only onboard sensors. We present APT-RL (action pretrained transformer-based reinforcement learning), a unified framework that enables multiskill locomotion to achieve high-speed traversal in complex environments through autonomous skill transitions using only onboard perception and computation. From insect behavior to transferable robot locomotion: inferring embodied locomotor principles from limited data via adversarial inverse reinforcement learning.

Insect locomotion exhibits remarkable adaptability and flexibility despite the limited scale of its nervous system. However, the underlying principles that govern leg coordination remain difficult to extract and model computationally. Understanding how insects achieve stable and adaptive locomotion has long provided important inspiration for the development of control strategies in bio-inspired robotics. Nevertheless, many existing approaches rely on predefined coordination rules, manually tuned parameters, or hand-crafted reward functions, which limit the flexibility and transferability of th

Embodied artificial intelligence in robotic orthopaedic surgery: from intelligent assistance to adaptive surgical autonomy.

Despite remarkable advances in robotic orthopaedic surgery over the past three decades, current commercial platforms remain precision-assistance technologies rather than truly adaptive intelligent systems. Embodied Artificial Intelligence (Embodied AI) represents a paradigm shift by enabling robots to perceive, reason, learn, and interact continuously with their physical environment through integrated perception-action loops. This structured narrative review examines the emerging role of Embodied AI in orthopaedic robotic surgery, highlights its conceptual differences from existing platforms,
