Transfer of exposure therapy effects to a threat context not considered during treatment in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia: Implications for potential mechanisms of change.

Further developments of exposure-based therapy (EBT) require more knowledge about transfer of treatment to non-trained everyday contexts. However, little is known about transfer effects of EBT. Using a standardized EBT protocol in 275 patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia we investigated the transfer of EBT to a highly standardized context during a Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT; being entrapped in a small and dark test chamber) and not part of the exposure sessions. Patients of a treatment group underwent the BATs before treatment (t1), after a preparatory treatment phase (t2), and aft

Reduced exposure to microwave radiation by rats: frequency specific effects.

Previous research has shown that SAR "hotspots" are induced within the laboratory rat and that the resulting thermal hotspots are not entirely dissipated by bloodflow. Two experiments were conducted to determine if hotspot formation in the body and tail of the rat, which is radiation frequency specific, would have behavioral consequences. In the first experiment rats were placed in a plexiglas cage one side of which, when occupied by the rat, commenced microwave radiation exposure; occupancy of the other side terminated exposure. Groups of rats were tested during a baseline period to determine

Effects of anisomycin on retention of the passive-avoidance habit as a function of age.

Three age groups of male Swiss albino CD-1 mice (2-3 mo, 6-7 mo, and 14-15 mo) were treated with a 120 mg/kg dose of the protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin or with an equal volume of saline at various times before and after training (20 min pretraining, 0, 10, 30, or 180 min posttraining) in a shock motivated passive-avoidance task. Young (2-3 mo) and intermediate-aged (6-7 mo) mice treated with anisomycin before or immediately after training demonstrated impaired retention at a 7 day test, but retention was normal for mice injected 10, 30 or 180 min posttraining. The older mice (14-15 mo)

Neural correlates of proactive avoidance deficits and alcohol use motives in problem drinking.

Physical pain and negative emotions represent two distinct drinking motives that contribute to harmful alcohol use. Proactive avoidance, in contrast, can reduce consumption in response to these motives but appears to be impaired in those with problem drinking. Despite such evidence, proactive avoidance and its underlying neural deficits have not been assessed experimentally. How these deficits inter-relate with drinking motives to influence alcohol use also remains unclear. The current study leveraged neuroimaging data in forty-one problem and forty-one social drinkers who performed a probabil

Differences in learning between hyperprolinemic mice and their congenic controls.

These experiments expanded earlier work on hyperprolinemic mice which showed learning deficits. The following behavioral tasks were used: step-through, passive avoidance; T-maze acquisition; shuttlebox acquisition, and radial-arm maze. Mouse species included PRO/Re-bb (genetically hyperprolinemic mice) and PRO/Re-aa (congenic nonhyperprolinemic controls) obtained from the Jackson Breeding Laboratories. Hyperprolinemic mice were impaired in acquiring T-maze and shuttlebox footshock avoidance behavior. One-trial passive avoidance behavior did not clearly differentiate between the groups. Radial

Protective effects of L-carnitine against valproic acid-induced memory impairment and anxiety-like behavior in adult rat.

This study was designed to explore the effects of valproic acid (VPA) on spatial and passive avoidance learning and memory as well as to assess the protective effects of L-Carnitine (LC) against VPA-induced memory deficit in the rat. Male Wistar rats received VPA (300 mg/kg/daily by i.p. injection), or LC (50 mg/kg/ daily by i.p. injection), or co-treatment with VPA and LC for 28 days. Following 28 days, Elevated Plus-Maze (EPM), Morris Water Maze (MWM), and Passive Avoidance Learning (PAL) tasks were used to evaluate the anxiety-like behavior and spatial and passive learning and memory, respe

Multimicrobial sepsis including Clostridium perfringens after chemoembolization of a single liver metastasis from common bile duct cancer.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR) are known to be related to learning and memory processes. Inactivation of mAChR by cholinergic antagonists have been shown to produce amnesia in a variety of behavioral tasks. In this study, we investigated the role of M1 and M2 AChR on passive avoidance learning and plasticity of synapses formed by Schaffer collaterals in freely moving rats. Experiments were performed using Wistar male rats. Seven days before testing, a recording electrode was lowered in the CA1 region under chloral hydrate anaesthesia to record the field excitatory postsynaptic pote

A systematic review of pharmacological effects on human aversive memory.

A large body of work has investigated the effect of various pharmacological compounds on aversive memory formation, retrieval, and modification in humans. A broad overview across signalling pathways and memory models is currently lacking. Here, we systematically review publications that tested the impact of acute pharmacological interventions on aversive memory in healthy humans, following PRISMA-2020. We identified 215 candidate compounds from 17 systems and searched PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus, until 14 June 2024. We identified 100 publications with 36 compounds targeting 13 systems. T

Norepinephrine release in the cerebellum contributes to aversive learning.

The modulation of dopamine release from midbrain projections to the striatum has long been demonstrated in reward-based learning, but the synaptic basis of aversive learning is far less characterized. The cerebellum receives axonal projections from the locus coeruleus, and norepinephrine release is implicated in states of arousal and stress, but whether aversive learning relies on plastic changes in norepinephrine release in the cerebellum is unknown. Here we report that in mice, norepinephrine is released in the cerebellum following an unpredicted noxious event (a foot-shock) and that this no

Reward and punishment learning deficits among bipolar disorder subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Reward sensitivity is an essential dimension related to mood fluctuations in bipolar disorder (BD), but there is currently a debate around hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity hypotheses to reward in BD during remission, probably related to a heterogeneous population within the BD spectrum and a lack of reward bias evaluation. Here, we examine reward maximization vs. punishment avoidance learning within the BD spectrum during remission. METHODS: Patients with BD-I (n = 45), BD-II (n = 34) and matched (n = 30) healthy controls (HC) were included. They performed an instrumental learn

Avoidance behaviour modulates but does not condition phonophobia in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Past studies do not account for avoidance behaviour in migraine as a potential confounder of phonophobia. OBJECTIVE: To analyse whether phonophobia is partially driven by avoidance behaviour when using the classic methodology (method of limits). METHODS: This is a case-control study where we tested phonophobia in a cohort of high-frequency/chronic migraine patients (15.5 ± 0.74 headache days/month) and non-headache controls. Auditory stimuli, delivered in both ears, were presented using three different paradigms: the method of limits, the method of constant stimuli, and the adapt

Debate: Young people with personality disorder should be recognised and appropriately managed.

The characteristic features of personality disorder that are found in older people are also present in young people. These features are currently not diagnosed as personality problems by most UK practitioners, through a mixture of fear and prejudice, which is used to justify this avoidant diagnostic behaviour. A simple solution is offered. State that personality function is 'disordered' in those who cross the threshold for diagnosis but emphasise that it is often ephemeral and can be managed.

So what'cha want? The impact of individualised rewards on associative learning in psychopathic offenders.

Psychopathic individuals typically present with associative learning impairments under explicit learning conditions. The present study aimed to investigate whether the formation of stimulus-outcome associations, as well as updating of these associations after changed contingencies, could be improved by using rewards with sufficiently high subjective values. To this end, 20 psychopathic offenders, 17 non-psychopathic offenders and 18 healthy controls performed a passive avoidance task with a reversal phase under three motivational conditions, using naturalistic rewards. The subjective values of

Better safe than wealthy: Dysfunctional risk avoidance in spider-fearful individuals.

Previous research has documented that fearful individuals avoid fear-relevant cues even if they incur costs in doing so. Paradigms that were previously used to study avoidance in the lab, manipulated reward contingencies in favor of selecting either fear-relevant or neutral cues, e.g., spiders versus butterflies. We, thus, developed a paradigm where the chance of monetary gains was linked with increasing probability of a fear-relevant or a neutral outcome. To this end, we modified the well-established Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) to include fear-relevant outcomes. Individuals with and wit

Action observation as a treatment option for fear avoidance behavior in chronic spinal pain.

Psychological factors play an essential role in the maintenance of various chronic pain states, with fear avoidance beliefs contributing to significant functional limitation and disability in chronic spinal pain. Fear avoidance behaviors are typically managed with cognitive-behavioral interventions such as graded exposure to feared movements and graded activity programs. However, attempts to make patients with high pain-related fear perform painful actions using graded exposure therapy can be very challenging. These fear avoidance beliefs in individuals with pain are usually acquired through p

Activity pacing in chronic pain: concepts, evidence, and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Activity pacing (AP) is a concept that is central to many chronic pain theories and treatments, yet there remains confusion regarding its definition and effects. OBJECTIVE: To review the current knowledge concerning AP and integrate this knowledge in a manner that allows for a clear definition and useful directions for future research. METHODS: A narrative review of the major theoretical approaches to AP and of the empirical evidence regarding the effects of AP interventions, followed by an integrative discussion. RESULTS: The concept of AP is derived from 2 main traditions: ope
