Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina and Theileria equi are worldwide tick-borne hemoprotozoan that cause diseases characterized by fever, anemia, weight loss and abortion. A common feature of these diseases are transition from acute to chronic phases, in which parasites may persist in the host for life, and becoming a reservoir for tick transmission. The live-attenuated vaccines for B. bovis and B. bigemina are not available for worldwide use due to legal restrictions and other concerns such as potential erythrocyte antigen and pathogen contamination, and a vaccine for T. equi is not available. Of 20 blood samples from nilgais from México, five were polymerase chain reaction-positive for Babesia bigemina and one for Babesia bovis. Positive samples had the expected 170 (B. bigemina) and 291 (B. bovis) base pairs and were identical to Gen-Bank B. bigemina accession S45366 and B. bovis M38218.

Babesia canis and B. rossi are large Babesia species that infect dogs and cause clinical disease. The spectrum of disease is highly diverse with either parasite, but upon evaluation of field cases it has been suggested that in general B. rossi is more virulent than B. canis. This difference was also found in experimental infections using B. canis and B. rossi isolates and appeared to be related to a difference in parasitaemia. Whether this difference reflects the essential difference between B. canis and B. rossi species in general, or merely reflects the variability in virulence of individual

Combined inoculation of cattle with vaccine strains of Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis induced lower antibody titers to B. bigemina than to B. bovis (previous study). Three groups of heifers were used to detect if the low antibody level was due to competition between Babesia species: individuals of G1 and G2 were inoculated with 10 million B. bigemina and B. bovis, respectively, and those of G3 with 10 million of each parasite. The prepatent periods, maximum parasitaemias and antibody titers (indirect immunofluorescent antibody test) were evaluated. The mean prepatent periods (days) for B.

Bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis is an economically important disease that affects cattle worldwide. Both B. bigemina and B. bovis are transovarially transmitted by Rhipicephalus ticks. However, little is known regarding parasite gene expression during infection of the tick vector or mammalian host, which has limited the development of effective control strategies to alleviate the losses to the cattle industry. To understand Babesia gene regulation during tick and mammalian host infection, we performed high throughput RNA-sequencing using samples collected from ca

Water buffalo is important livestock in several countries in the Latin American and Caribbean regions. This buffalo species can be infected by tick-borne hemoparasites and remains a carrier of these pathogens which represent a risk of infection for more susceptible species like cattle. Therefore, studies on the epidemiology of tick-borne hemoparasites in buffaloes are required. In this study, the prevalence of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale were determined in water buffalo herds of western Cuba. To this aim, a cross-sectional study covering farms with large buffalo po

In a previous paper, we reported on a large number of cheetah blood specimens that gave positive signals only for Babesia and/or Theileria genus-specific probes on the reverse line blot (RLB) assay, indicating the presence of a novel species or variant of an existing species. Some of these specimens were investigated further by microscopic, serological, sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. The near-full-length 18S rRNA genes of 13 samples, as well as the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) region, were amplified, cloned, and sequenced. A species-specific RLB probe, designed to target t

A live, frozen experimental vaccine containing Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina multiplied in vitro was stored in liquid nitrogen after simultaneous cryopreservation using glycerol as cryoprotectant. The viability of the vaccine was tested by inoculating (subcutaneously) three groups of seven steers each, 2, 12 and 24 h after thawing at 40 degrees C and dilution to obtain a dose of 2 x 10(7) of each organism. All vaccinated cattle developed detectable parasitaemia in thin and/or thick blood smears. No statistically significant differences in the prepatent period were detected amongst the cat

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and their isoenzyme patterns in B. rodhaini (BR) and B. microti (BM), the two major causative species of murine babesiosis, were examined. G6PD and LDH activities were higher in BR than those in BM, whereas MDH activity was lower in BR than that in BM. No differences were observed between BR and BM in the mobility of isoenzyme bands of G6PD and MDH. On LDH isoenzyme pattern, at least 5 bands were detected in BR, while only one band in BM. Since each subunit of LDH is known to be cod

Understanding the ecological niches and quantifying the disease burden of Babesia species is essential for efficient surveillance and control strategies. Through a systematic review of global distributions, we document all 250 identified Babesia species across 73 vector species, 224 animals, and humans. Babesia caballi infected the broadest range of tick species, while Babesia microti exhibited the highest prevalence in wildlife. Among 26 848 recorded human cases involving 10 Babesia species, >90% were attributed to Babesia microti and Babesia duncani. Using three machine learning algorithms,

The currently accepted initiation of Babesia infection describes a sporozoite stage infused into the host, along with other saliva components, by the tick vector. This sporozoite can enter and initiate erythrocyte infection directly. In the particular case of Babesia microti, however, that sporozoite loses the ability to further propagate in vitro once deprived of its natural host. True B. sensu stricto do not require the host collaboration described in this study. Hence it has become a current topic of research involving B. microti (B. sensu lato), a rather unique species that requires host c

The genera Babesia and Theileria (phylum Apicomplexa, order Piroplasmida) are mainly transmitted by Ixodid ticks in which the sexual part of their life cycle followed by sporogony takes place. They include protozoan parasites that infect erythrocytes of a variety of vertebrate hosts, including domestic and wild animals, with some Babesia spp. also infecting humans. Babesia sporozoites transmitted in the tick's saliva during the bloodmeal directly infect erythrocytes, where they asexually multiply to produce pear-shaped merozoites in the process of merogony; whereas a pre-erythrocytic schizogon

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom is considered free of autochthonous transmission of canine babesiosis although cases are reported in dogs associated with recent travel abroad. During the winter months of 2015/16, a cluster of cases of disease in dogs with signs suggestive of canine babesiosis were reported in Harlow, Essex.
METHODS: Babesia species were detected in dog blood samples by Giemsa staining of blood smears and by pan-piroplasm PCRs. Babesia species were also detected in extracts of tick DNA using pan-piroplasm PCRs. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis was used to confirm the sp

BACKGROUND: Babesia divergens is the most common blood parasite in Europe causing babesiosis, a tick-borne malaria-like disease. Despite an increasing focus on B. divergens, especially regarding veterinary and human medicine, the sexual development of Babesia is poorly understood. Development of Babesia sexual stages in the host blood (gametocytes) plays a decisive role in parasite acquisition by the tick vector. However, the exact mechanism of gametocytogenesis is still unexplained.
METHODS: Babesia divergens gametocytes are characterized by expression of bdccp1, bdccp2 and bdccp3 genes. Usi

Babesiosis is a tick-borne hemoprotozoan disease of domestic and wild animals. The disease is caused by various species of Babesia and some species of Babesia have also zoonotic significance. The parasite in vertebrate hosts' remains in erythrocytes and the morphology of Babesia spp. is not uniform in all vertebrate hosts. With the advancement of science, particularly the use of molecular techniques made it easy to study the evolution of parasites and thereby reclassifying Babesia spp. as per their phylogeny and to establish the relation of one isolate of Babesia spp. with isolates throughout

This study of 1196 dogs over a period of 18 months determined the seasonal infection patterns of canine babesiosis in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. The work also describes a retrospective study of the prevalence of canine babesiosis in laboratory clinical blood samples submitted to the University of Zambia, School of Veterinary Medicine for routine haematological examination from the year 1994 to 2009. A cross-sectional study was also performed to determine the levels of Babesia in a low-income society (during the dry season and the wet season of the year), where 361 samples were collect

Babesiosis is as one of the emerging human and animal diseases transmitted by ticks. It is caused intraerythrocytic parasites of the genus Babesia. Current evidence of human babesiosis suggests that the majority of cases are involved by Babesia divergens and Babesia microti piroplasms. As zoonotic reservoir of B. microti serve small mammals--insectivores and rodents. The occurrence of this parasite in natural environment in Poland is documented for various regions, in the wide range of mammal hosts. The most important role as Babesia microti reservoir play Microtus voles. The prevalence of inf
