The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) process was developed to provide a harmonised safety assessment approach to support EFSA Scientific Panels and Units. The QPS approach assesses the taxonomic identity, body of relevant knowledge and safety concerns of microorganisms intentionally added to the food and feed chain. Safety concerns identified for a taxonomic unit (TU) are, where possible, reflected by 'qualifications' that should be assessed at the strain level by EFSA's Scientific Panels. In total, 340 notifications were received between October 2022 and September 2025, of which, 190 wer

The issues of pyrethroid resistance and outdoor malaria parasite transmission have prompted the WHO to call for the development and adoption of viable alternative vector control methods. Larval source management is one of the core malaria vector interventions recommended by the Ministry of Health in many African countries, but it is rarely implemented due to concerns on its cost-effectiveness. New long-lasting microbial larvicide can be a promising cost-effective supplement to current vector control and elimination methods because microbial larvicide uses killing mechanisms different from pyre

Adsorption on a soil matrix of the insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt) transgenic plants affects their accumulation and release and, hence, bioavailability in soil. Cry1Ab protein isolated from Bt transgenic rice was used to evaluate the adsorption and desorption on bentone, kaolin, and humic acids (HAs). The adsorption equilibrium of Cry1Ab protein was reached within 1-2 h for bentone and kaolin and within 4-8 h for HAs. The adsorption isotherms were better described by linear expressions ( R (2) >/= 0.973) rather than by the Freundlich model. No saturation was observed, ev

BACKGROUND: Starlink(TM), a variety of corn genetically engineered to contain the insecticidal protein Cry9c, had not been approved for human consumption because it possessed some characteristics associated with allergenic proteins. However, in the fall of 2000 CRY9C DNA was detected in several corn-containing products, suggesting that Starlink corn had entered the human food supply. Subsequently, consumers, following consumption of corn products, reported a number of adverse health events, possibly consistent with allergic reaction.
METHODS: To investigate the possibility of allergic reactio

Insect resistance management (IRM) can extend the lifetime of management options, but depends on extensive knowledge of the biology of the pest species involved for an optimal plan. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered seed blends refuge for two of the transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn products targeting the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. Larval movement between Bt and isoline plants can be detrimental to resistance management for high dose Bt products because the larger larvae can be more tolerant of the Bt toxins. We assesse

Evolution of resistance by insect pests reduces the benefits of extensively cultivated transgenic crops that produce insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Previous work showed that resistance to Bt toxin Cry1Ac, which is produced by transgenic cotton, can be conferred by mutations disrupting a cadherin protein that binds this Bt toxin in the larval midgut. However, the potential for epistatic interactions between the cadherin gene and other genes has received little attention. Here, we report evidence of epistasis conferring resistance to Cry1Ac in the cotton bollworm, Helico

Insects represent powerful experimental systems for investigating host-microorganism interactions, providing valuable insights into bacterial pathogenicity, immune regulation, symbiosis, and antimicrobial discovery. This review examines the complex relationships between insects and bacteria, focusing on the mechanisms that control infection, immune activation, and microbial adaptation. Particular attention is given to the routes of pathogen entry and to the conserved innate immune pathways that coordinate host defenses, including the Toll, Imd, Duox, and Jak/Stat signaling cascades. The review

The long-term safety of genetically-modified (GM) crops, particularly their effects on cardiovascular health, remains a subject of scientific debate. This study systematically evaluated the effects of GM maize (Zea mays) feed on cardiovascular function in cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) through two-generation feeding over 8 years. A comprehensive assessment of effects of the GM diet on myocardial injury, cardiac function, and arrhythmia risk was conducted using cardiac-specific biomarker assays, echocardiography, surface electrocardiography (ECG), and implantable cardiac monitoring.

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein exhibiting antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiinflammatory, antianaemic and anticarcinogenic properties. While its inhibitory effects against bacterial pathogens are well investigated, little is known about its influence on the production and/or mode of action of bacterial toxins. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the impact of food supplements based on bovine lactoferrin on Bacillus cereus enterotoxin production. First, strain-specific growth inhibition of three representative isolates was observed in minimal medium wi

A 42-d feeding experiment with growing Ross x Ross 508 broilers showed that the nutritional value of insect-protected and herbicide-tolerant corn was comparable to that of the genetically similar control and 5 commercial reference corn hybrids. MON 88017 provides protection from feeding damage by coleopteran pest corn rootworm and is tolerant to the action of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the Roundup family of agricultural herbicides. MON 88017 x MON 810 was developed by the traditional breeding of MON 88017 with MON 810, which provides protection from the European corn borer and other

Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis infection, is an important neglected tropical disease that causes significant public health problems in the tropics and subtropics. The disease can persist in hosts for decades and may be life-threatening because of hyperinfection and dissemination. Ivermectin (mostly) and albendazole are the most common anthelmintics used for treatment. Albendazole is suboptimal for this parasite, and although ivermectin is quite effective in immunocompromised patients, a multiple-course regimen is required. Furthermore, reliance on a single drug class for

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is the primary vector of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue and chikungunya, in China. The management of vector mosquitoes is the primary strategy for the control of such infectious diseases. The gravid Ae. albopictus prefers to skip-oviposit its eggs into different small water containers, and the management of these breeding places is critical for mosquito control. Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies Israelensis (Bti) is a useful biological larvicide, but the effective period of the currently available commercial product is relatively short. This study aimed

The Bacillus cereus group includes several Bacillus species with closely related phylogeny. The most well-studied members of the group, B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis, are known for their pathogenic potential. Here, we present the historical rationale for speciation and discuss shared and unique features of these bacteria. Aspects of cell morphology and physiology, and genome sequence similarity and gene synteny support close evolutionary relationships for these three species. For many strains, distinct differences in virulence factor synthesis provide facile means for species a

Microevolutionary mechanisms of resistance to a bacterial pathogen were explored in a population of the Greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, selected for an 8.8-fold increased resistance against the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) compared with a non-selected (suspectible) line. Defense strategies of the resistant and susceptible insect lines were compared to uncover mechanisms underpinning resistance, and the possible cost of those survival strategies. In the uninfected state, resistant insects exhibited enhanced basal expression of genes related to regeneration and a

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections are one of the most important parasitic infections of humans worldwide, considered by some second only to malaria in associated disease burden. Single-dose mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths, including hookworms, relies primarily on albendazole, which has variable efficacy. New and better hookworm therapies are urgently needed. Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein Cry5B has potential as a novel anthelmintic and has been extensively studied in the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. Here, we ask whether single-dose Cry5B can provide therapy a

BACKGROUND: Short-stature corn became commercially available in the United States in 2025 and has several desirable qualities including lodging resistance and potential for greater planting density. Corn rootworm, Diabrotica spp., are among the most serious insect pests of corn in the United States. However, information about how corn rootworm interact with short-stature corn is currently lacking. To protect crops from rootworm injury, transgenic corn that produces insecticidal toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is frequently grown. An important component of insect resistance mana

Chickpea productivity is affected by various constraints that are biotic (Helicoverpa, Aphids, Callosobruchus, Bromus and Orobanche) and abiotic (drought and salinity). In addition, the grains of this legume are deficient in sulfur amino acids, methionine and cysteine. The possibilities for genetic improvement by marker-assisted breeding and selection approaches are limited in chickpeas due to their sexually incompatible gene pool. Transgenic chickpeas expressing either the cry1Ac/b or the cry2Aa gene and the bean α-amylase inhibitor gene are resistant to Helicoverpa and bruchids, respectively
