BACKGROUND: Occupational sprain and strain injuries are one of the most common types of nonfatal occupational injuries and a significant source of lost workdays. This study examines factors associated with severe work-related sprain/strain injuries to the back, shoulder, and knees.
METHODS: A synthetic case-control study was performed (controls were selected from the same pool of utility workers as cases). Cases included all electric utility workers who had experienced a severe work-related sprain/strain injury to the back, knee, or shoulder. Primary controls were selected from all workers wh

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the spinal cord are not only dreaded because of the high risks existing during the acute phase, but also because of their potential long-term sequelae. Horseback riding also poses a high risk of spinal injuries. We therefore evaluated the most frequent characteristics of accidents leading to long-term sequelae, the primary long-term discomfort resulting from such injuries caused by horseback riding accidents and the way injured persons changed their behaviour after the accidents.
PATIENTS: Our study included all cases of horseback riding injuries registered in the Depa

Lower back pain in young athletes is a common problem. The prevalence of back pain from different causes in adolescent age group is between 20% and 30%. However, the incidence of low back pain in young athletes varies widely in different sports. Overuse injuries are the most common cause of low back pain in young athletes. In case of overuse injuries, the cause and effect relationship between back pain and specific condition is often difficult to establish. In adolescent athletes, the most common underlying identified cause of low back pain is lumbar spondylolysis. During adolescent growth spu

BACKGROUND: Stress injuries (stress fractures and stress reactions) of the lumbosacral region are one of the causes of sports-related lower back pain in young individuals. These injuries can be detected by bone marrow edema lesion on MRI. However, little is known about the prevalence and clinical features of early stage lumbosacral stress injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of lumbosacral stress injuries.
METHODS: A total of 312 patients (under 18 years of age) who complained of sports-related lower back pain that had lasted for ≥7 days underwent magnetic resonance imaging

Pain is common in athletes which should be well managed. To identify risk factors for shoulder pain, and the association between shoulder pain, lower back pain and knee pain among elementary school-aged badminton players, we conducted a cross-sectional study to collect data of the past year among 611 elementary school age (7-12 years old) badminton players belonging to the Japan Schoolchildren Badminton Federation using a questionnaire. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The overall incidence rate of shoulder injuries,

The occupational injury profile of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics is not well described. We retrospectively studied 254 injuries over a 3.5-year period in a busy urban EMS system. Low back strain was the most common injury (93/254, 36%), with EMTs suffering a significantly higher injury rate than paramedics (0.33 v 0.17 injuries/person-years at risk, P = .03). Lifting caused 58/93 (62.4%) of back injuries, and most occurred at the scene to which personnel were dispatched (58/93, 62.4%). The back injuries were recurrent in 31% of personnel. The data showed trends toward hig

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective population-based cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To identify early predictors of self-reported occupational back reinjury within 1 year after work-related back injury.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Back injuries are the costliest and most prevalent disabling occupational injuries in the United States. A substantial proportion of workers with back injuries have reinjuries after returning to work, yet there are few studies of risk factors for occupational back reinjuries.
METHODS: We aimed to identify the incidence and early (in the claim) predictors of self-reported back rei

Orthopedic injuries account for a large number of sick call visits during carrier battle group (CBG) deployments. The purpose of this study was to profile the orthopedic injuries during two CBG deployments to help both the line and medical communities better prepare their personnel and supplies. The current study confirmed that orthopedic injuries resulted in the greatest number of sick call visits to the CBG medical departments. Injury analysis revealed a significant number of hand/wrist and back/neck injuries during both carrier deployments. The groups with the highest number of injuries wer

While Chinese dance is a popular dance genre among Chinese teenagers and adults, little is known regarding the prevalence of dance-related injuries or factors associated with such injuries among Chinese dance practitioners. The current cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of dance-related injuries and their associated risk factors among young Chinese dance practitioners in Hong Kong. Online surveys were distributed to dancers through local dance associations, while paper-based surveys were distributed to young Chinese dance performers during the 54th School Dance Festival in

Team gymnastics (TeamGym), a sport primarily practiced by girls/women, has rapidly gained popularity among adolescents. Despite a high pain prevalence among gymnasts, comprehensive epidemiological studies on injuries are lacking. This study aimed to investigate injury incidence rates, both overall and by body region including information on time-loss and non-time-loss injuries, type and severity, in competitive TeamGym gymnasts aged 10-30 years. During a 10-month season (August 2021-June 2022), a cohort of 474 gymnasts (73% women) was prospectively followed through weekly text-message queries

Musculoskeletal injuries occur frequently in connection with physical activity. More information was sought on pretraining factors that may predispose to such injuries. Data were obtained on the age, height, weight, aerobic fitness as measured by a 3000-m run test, and health as assessed on the basis of a medical examination, of 912 male conscripts prior to an 8-week period of basic military and physical training. Injuries were registered as they occurred by doctors attached to the training camp. Every fourth to fifth conscript suffered one or more musculo-skeletal injuries during basic traini

BACKGROUND: Although it is evident that the risk of injury in handball varies according to player position, it is unclear whether the characteristics of these injuries also differ. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the position-associated injury profiles of university handball players in Japan.
METHODS: A total of 2056 participants who played in the 2018 and 2019 Japanese National University Handball Championships were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-reported injury questionnaire regarding demographic and injury-related information was administered.

Although paracycling is a growing discipline in high level competitive sports as well as in posttraumatic rehabilitation, epidemiological data of resulting injuries is still missing. Therefore, 19 athletes of the German national paracycling team were asked about their injuries during the 2008 season using a standardized questionnaire. Overall, 18 (94.7 %) of 19 athletes reported overuse injuries; most commonly localized at the back (83.3 %), neck/shoulder (77.8 %), knee (50 %), groin/buttock (50 %) and hands/wrists (38.9 %). Altogether, 18 accidents were registered, corresponding to an injury

OBJECTIVES: Golf participation numbers have increased in recent years within the UK and globally. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of injuries in amateur and professional golfers showed over half of golfers sustain an injury during their lifetime. This review recommended that future research should utilize the recent international consensus on reporting of injury in golf. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and severity of injuries sustained by UK-based golfers in the previous year.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional online survey consisting of 35 questions

Study DesignBiomechanical Simulation Study.ObjectivesSpinal injuries account for 30-40% of severe mountain biking (MTB) cases and may be mitigated by back protectors. Thoracolumbar compression fractures are linked to rolling impacts during forward falls, yet their biomechanical mechanisms remain poorly understood. It is unclear whether current back protectors, tested under perpendicular conditions (EN1621-2), adequately address the complex loading of real-world crashes. This work aims to investigate the biomechanical mechanisms of thoracolumbar fractures during MTB forward falls.MethodsForty-fo
