Risk factors for radiation-induced optic neuropathy: a case-control study.

IMPORTANCE: Identifying risk factors for radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) could promote a more conservative approach to radiation treatment planning in vulnerable patients. BACKGROUND: This study explored possible factors beyond radiation dose associated with the development of RION after external beam radiation therapy. DESIGN: This was a retrospective case-control study conducted at a university hospital tertiary care center. PARTICIPANTS: Cases (n = 14) meeting criteria for a diagnosis of RION by neuro-ophthalmologic exam were identified from a single-centre neuro-ophthalmology

Osteopontin knockout does not influence the severity of rectal damage in a preclinical model of radiation proctitis in mice.

BACKGROUND: Radiation damage to the normal gut is a dose-limiting factor in the application of radiation therapy to treat abdominal and pelvic cancers. All tissue cell types react in concert to orchestrate an acute inflammatory reaction followed by a delayed chronic scarring process. Osteopontin (OPN) is a matricellular protein known to be involved in various physiological but also pathological processes such as tissue inflammation and fibrosis. AIMS: The aim of our study was to determine whether OPN knockout influences the severity of radiation proctitis and to investigate the role of OPN in

Real-Time Avoidance of Ionising Radiation Using Layered Costmaps for Mobile Robots.

Humans in hazardous environments take actions to reduce unnecessary risk, including limiting exposure to radioactive materials where ionising radiation can be a threat to human health. Robots can adopt the same approach of risk avoidance to minimise exposure to radiation, therefore limiting damage to electronics and materials. Reducing a robot's exposure to radiation results in longer operational lifetime and better return on investment for nuclear sector stakeholders. This work achieves radiation avoidance through the use of layered costmaps, to inform path planning algorithms of this additio

Cancer risks after radiation exposure in middle age.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data show that radiation exposure during childhood is associated with larger cancer risks compared with exposure at older ages. For exposures in adulthood, however, the relative risks of radiation-induced cancer in Japanese atomic bomb survivors generally do not decrease monotonically with increasing age of adult exposure. These observations are inconsistent with most standard models of radiation-induced cancer, which predict that relative risks decrease monotonically with increasing age at exposure, at all ages. METHODS: We analyzed observed cancer risk patterns a

Radiation Recall Pneumonitis After Treatment With Checkpoint Blockade Immunotherapy: A Case Series and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall pneumonitis (RRP) is a poorly understood clinical syndrome in which patients develop radiation pneumonitis triggered by a systemic agent, often years after the completion of radiation therapy. Immune checkpoint blockade agents have only recently been posited as a trigger for RRP. Here, we present three cases of immunotherapy-induced RRP. CASE PRESENTATION: Our first patient was diagnosed with primary lung adenocarcinoma, and 4.5 years after completing radiation therapy developed symptomatic RRP immediately following a second dose of nivolumab-containing immunother

Intracranial long-term complications of radiation therapy: an image-based review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation therapy is commonly utilized in the majority of solid cancers and many hematologic malignancies and other disorders. While it has an undeniably major role in improving cancer survival, radiation therapy has long been recognized to have various negative effects, ranging from mild to severe. In this manuscript, we review several intracranial manifestations of therapeutic radiation, with particular attention to those that may be encountered by radiologists. METHODS: We conducted an extensive literature review of known complications of intracranial radiation ther

[Radiation carcinogenesis].

Misrepair of DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation is a potential cause of carcinogenesis following exposure to radiation. Radiation exposure increases the incidence of the same types of mutations that occur spontaneously in a given population. A high incidence of DNA double-strand breaks is characteristic of damage by ionizing radiation compared with those induced by other environmental mutagens. In China, residents living in areas with high level background radiation(6mSv/y) had a significantly higher frequency of dicentric and ring chromosomes compared to that for the residents living in

The Use of Computerized Tomography Scans in Elective Knee and Hip Arthroplasty-What Do They Tell Us and at What Risk?

The average background radiation exposure in the United States has nearly doubled over the previous quarter century, with almost all the increase derived from medical imaging. Nearly 2% of all cancers in the United States may be attributable to radiation from computerized tomography (CT) scans. Given the nondiagnostic nature of CT scans that are used in elective knee and hip arthroplasty today, special consideration should be given to the inherent risk of radiation exposure with routine use of this technology. Methods to decrease radiation exposure including modulating the settings of the CT m

Understanding the risk of ionizing radiation in breast imaging: Concepts and quantities, clinical importance, and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Conventional mammography remains the primary imaging modality for state-of-the-art breast imaging practice and its benefit (both on diagnostic and screening) was largely reported. In mammography, the typical Mean Glandular Dose (MGD) from X-ray radiation to the breast spans, on average, from 1 to 10 mGy, depending on breast thicknesses, percentage of fibroglandular tissue, and on the examination purpose. METHODS: The aim of this narrative review is to describe the extent of radiation risk in X-ray breast imaging and discuss the main steps and parameters (e.g. MGD, screening freque

Efficacy of postoperative radiation treatment for bone metastases in the extremities.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impending or pathological fractures due to bone metastases may require surgical fixation. Postoperative radiation is often recommended to reduce local progression and prevent prosthesis displacement, hence reducing the need for second surgery. The objectives of this study were to investigate the need for second surgery, and to report on rates of re-irradiation, tumor progression and prosthesis displacement following postoperative radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from 65 patients who received postoperative radiation to 74 sites in the extremities in

Interferon-gamma in 5 patients with cutaneous radiation syndrome after radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Irradiation can cause acute inflammatory responses as well as chronic fibrotic alterations of the skin. Cutaneous radiation fibrosis evokes a complex of therapeutic problems. However, therapeutic options, apart from surgical approaches, are limited. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five female patients suffering from severe cutaneous fibrosis were treated with interferon-gamma on a low-dose regimen, 3 x 100 microg/week subcutaneously for 6 months, then once per week for another 6 months. In 4 patients, skin thickness was measured with high-frequency (20 MHz) ultrasound in a clinically well-d

Cytogenetic monitoring of peripheral blood lymphocytes from medical radiation professionals occupationally exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation.

In order to assess the health risk of low-dose radiation to radiation professionals, monitoring is performed through chromosomal aberration analysis and micronuclei (MN) analysis. MN formation has drawbacks for monitoring in the low-dose range. Nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB) analysis, with a lower background level, has good dose-response relationships at both high and relatively low dose ranges. Dicentric and ring chromosomes were analyzed in 199 medical radiation professionals, and NPB/MN yields were analyzed in 205 radiation professionals. The effects of sex, age of donor, types of work, and len

Is the Linear No-Threshold Dose-Response Paradigm Still Necessary for the Assessment of Health Effects of Low Dose Radiation?

Inevitable human exposure to ionizing radiation from man-made sources has been increased with the proceeding of human civilization and consequently public concerns focus on the possible risk to human health. Moreover, Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents after the 2011 East-Japan earthquake and tsunami has brought the great fear and anxiety for the exposure of radiation at low levels, even much lower levels similar to natural background. Health effects of low dose radiation less than 100 mSv have been debated whether they are beneficial or detrimental because sample sizes were not large eno

Determinants of Greater Peak Radiation Skin Dose in Contemporary Percutaneous Coronary Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Skin radiation injuries, especially radiation ulcers, are serious side effects caused by ionizing radiation during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Because skin radiation injuries are closely associated with the peak skin dose, it is important to minimize the peak skin dose. The aim of the present study was to investigate the determinants of greater peak skin dose in current PCI. METHODS: We included 707 consecutive coronary artery lesions, and divided them into an excess radiation group (n = 26; defined as peak skin dose ≥2 Gy) and a standard radiation group (n = 681; d
