By recording the lower beak movement, open-mouth breathing was monitored in adult hens restrained in a supine position with the cannulated trachea under rebreathing conditions, bilateral cervical vagotomy or heat load. Tidal volume and respiratory carbon-dioxide and oxygen contents were recorded simultaneously. The beak movement can be a significant indication of hypercapnia and/or increase in respiratory CO2 content, but not of hypoxia or decrease in respiratory O2 content. Vagotomy causes big oscillatory movements of the beak, which do not mainly depend on hypercapnic hypoxia induced by the

Retinoids have been applied to stage 20 chick embryos by using beads that act as controlled release carriers. With beads soaked in high concentrations of all-trans-retinoic acid, the face, in addition to the wing, is affected. Severe bilateral clefting of the primary palate results; the upper beak is completely missing, whereas the lower beak is unaffected. By using a scoring system that quantitates the severity of the upper beak defect, dose-response curves have been obtained. With beads soaked in progressively higher concentrations of retinoic acid, the upper beaks are increasingly truncated

Injured birds pose a challenge in veterinary medicine, requiring innovative approaches for restoration of function and enhancing the quality of life. This case report describes the successful reconstruction of the mandibular beak of an Amazona aestiva parrot (Psittacidae) after a traumatic injury. The injury caused a fracture in the mandibular beak, resulting in significant limitation of function. Computed tomography imaging was used for surgical planning, allowing visualization of the remaining mandibular beak on the parrot's rhamphotheca and determination of the appropriate dimensions of the

A 1-year-old red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) was presented with an acute onset of hyperprotraction of the upper beak and an inability to return the beak to its normal position. With the abnormal beak position, the bird was unable to eat. Standard radiographic images of the head supported a diagnosis of a rostroparasphenopalatal luxation. The luxation was reduced with a 23-gauge hypodermic needle inserted dorsal to the palatine bone and directed ventrally. After the procedure, the bird regained its normal beak function within 2 hours.

An anatomic study of the trapeziometacarpal joint was conducted on 47 cadaver thumb specimens. The superficial capsule restrained only metacarpal rotation about its long axis. Intracapsular anatomy was notable for a large anterior subthenar recess limited dorsally by the abductor pollicis longus insertion and palmarly by the deep palmar or "beak" ligament. This beak ligament was essential for translational stability of the metacarpal on the trapezium with flexion of the thumb ray. There was a direct correlation between the status of the articular surfaces and the integrity of the beak ligament

Darwin's finches are a model system in ecological and evolutionary research, but surprisingly little is known about their skull morphology and development. Indeed, only the early beak development and external variation in adult beak shape has been studied. Understanding the development of the skull from embryo up to the adult is important to gain insights into how selection acts upon, and drives, variation in beak shape. Here, we provide a detailed description of the skeletal development of the skull in the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis). Although the ossification sequence of the crania

Beak fractures represent a rare subtype of calcaneal fractures with potential risk of soft tissue complications due to compromised local perfusion. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial to prevent necrosis, infection, and soft tissue defects. This case report describes a 71-year-old male with a beak fracture and delayed intervention with reoccurring soft tissue defects. Given the rarity of the condition, atypical presentation and need for urgent intervention, this emphasizes the importance of awareness of beak fractures of the calcaneus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The evolution of intricate floral structures is often a direct consequence of pollinator-mediated selection. In buzz-pollinated plants, pollen is released through vibrations, and control of its removal is crucial for maximizing male reproductive success. The genus Pedicularis presents a compelling case, with many species exhibiting a distinctive upper corolla lip, or galea, shaped like a 'beak' or 'elephant trunk'. The adaptive function of this trait has remained mysterious and largely not subjected to empirical testing. We hypothesized that the beak acts as a dispensing t

The oceanographic conditions of the Southern California Bight (SCB) dictate the distribution and abundance of prey resources and therefore the presence of mobile predators, such as goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). Goose-beaked whales are deep-diving odontocetes that spend a majority of their time foraging at depth. Due to their cryptic behavior, little is known about how they respond to seasonal and interannual changes in their environment. This study utilizes passive acoustic data recorded from two sites within the SCB to explore the oceanographic conditions that goose-beaked whales

Treatment of avian malocclusion, or "scissor beak," is well-described in the literature, but reports have focused on early intervention of acute traumatic and congenital cases, and surgical correction of chronic mandibular malunion are rare. This report describes the diagnostic investigation, surgical correction, and long-term follow up of a 3-month-old Ameraucana rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) with chronic beak malocclusion. Computed tomography was used to confirm the unilateral mandibular fracture malunion and guide surgical planning, which involved creation of a custom osteogenic distra

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomical dimensions and boundaries involved in Draf IIA (DIIA) and Draf IIB (DIIB) frontal sinusotomies, and to determine how complete frontal beak removal affects the frontal sinus drainage pathway. Specifically, we compared the proportional increase in drainage area between DIIA and DIIB performed with and without complete frontal beak removal.
METHODS: This retrospective radiological anatomical study analyzed 296 hemifaces (from 148 patients) who underwent paranasal sinus Computed Tomography (CT). Individuals over 18-years of age with

With the exception of primates, most vertebrates have laterally placed eyes. Binocular vision in vertebrates has been implicated in several functions, including depth perception, contrast discrimination, etc. However, the blind area in front of the head that is proximal to the binocular visual field is often neglected. This anterior blind area is important when discussing the evolution of binocular vision because its relative length is inversely correlated with the width of the binocular field. Therefore, species with wider binocular fields also have shorter anterior blind areas and objects al

An epizootic of beak abnormalities (avian keratin disorder) was recently detected among wild birds in Alaska. Here we describe the gross, histologic, and ultrastructural features of the disease in 30 affected adult black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus). Grossly, there was elongation of the rhamphotheca, with varying degrees of lateral deviation, crossing, and gapping between the upper and lower beak. Not uncommonly, the claws were overgrown, and there was alopecia, scaling, and crusting of the skin. The most prominent histopathologic features in the beak included epidermal hyperplasia

PURPOSE: This study examined a palmar beak fracture model to determine which thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint ligament is the primary ligament relevant to the pattern of injury.
METHODS: Six fresh-frozen cadaveric wrists were used. The radius, ulna, and first metacarpal were secured and tested with a materials testing system, holding the wrist in 20° extension, 20° ulnar deviation, and 30° palmar abduction of the first metacarpal. Testing consisted of preconditioning cycles followed by compressive loading at 100 mm/s. We confirmed fractures with fluoroscopy and dissected the specimens to exa

We present two cases of needlefish beak penetration to the orbit and cavernous sinus and a literature review of all 12 published cases involving needlefish orbital injuries. Our first case is a 7‑year‑old boy with a needlefish penetrating orbital injury where the beak was embedded in the orbit and cavernous sinus for 3 months prior to partial surgical removal. The second case is a 20‑year‑old man with a needlefish beak penetrating the orbit and cavernous sinus of his only seeing eye which was completely removed with retention of vision. There are 12 reported cases of needlefish orbital injurie

BACKGROUND: Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis is characterized by osteophyte growth and changes in the curvature of the articular surfaces of the trapezium and first metacarpal. The aim of this longitudinal study was to quantify in-vivo bone morphology changes with osteoarthritis progression.
METHODS: The study analyzed an observational dataset of 86 subjects with early thumb osteoarthritis and 22 age-matched asymptomatic controls. CT scans of subjects' affected hands were acquired at enrollment (year 0), and at 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6-year follow-up visits. Osteoarthritic subjects were classif

Bidrin treatment of quail embryos results in axial anomalies as well as malformations of the beak and the limbs. Whereas the administration of pralidoxime to teratogen-treated embryos prevents the appearance of the axial anomalies, the morphogenesis of the beak and limbs remains profoundly altered.
