The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster): an animal model for behavioral neuroendocrine research on pair bonding.

Pair bond formation has been investigated much less than many other social behaviors, perhaps in part because traditional laboratory mice and rats do not exhibit this behavior. However, pair bonding is common among monogamous animals such as the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In this review, we discuss how the prairie vole has been used as a model system to investigate the neurobiology of pair bonding. Descriptions include neuroanatomical differences between monogamous and non-monogamous voles, as well as how manipulations of vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, and corticosterone systems af

Neurobiological and Behavioral Consequences of Prenatal Methadone or Buprenorphine Exposure: Insight From Animal Models.

The marked increase in opioid use over the past three decades has been accompanied by increased use of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including during pregnancy. However, methadone and buprenorphine, the primary MOUDs, cross the placenta and the immature fetal blood-brain barrier, raising concerns about potential effects on offspring development. In this review, we summarize experimental animal studies published over the past 25 years examining neurobiological and behavioral outcomes following prenatal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine. Although animal models cannot fully est

Animal-assisted resilience in space exploration: a human factors approach to astronaut behavioral health.

Space science has been developed through past and current missions of the International Space Station (ISS) and Artemis (I and II) in low Earth orbit and on the lunar surface. Numerous missions have used animals on test flights to better understand the physiological dangers of space flight for humans. A contemporary focus of space exploration is long-duration crewed travel to establish a Moon station and reach Mars. The astrotechnology of the human-less spaceflights (USA, Russia, ESA, UAE, China, and India) launched in 1965 (Mariner 4), has advanced enough to support the progressive colonizati

Electroacupuncture modulates glutamate neurotransmission to alleviate PTSD-like behaviors in a PTSD animal model.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that develops after exposure to a traumatic event. Owing to the relatively low rates of response and remission with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as the primary treatment for PTSD, there is a recognized need for alternative strategies to effectively address the symptoms of PTSD. Dysregulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission plays a critical role in various disorders, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, the regulation of glutamate levels holds great promise as a therapeutic target for th

Cannabidiol microinjection into the nucleus accumbens attenuated nociceptive behaviors in an animal model of tonic pain.

Cannabidiol, the major non-psychoactive constituent of Cannabis, has attracted much attention as a therapeutic agent for intractable chronic pain in many conditions. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) as a major site of action of cannabinoids is one of the main mediators of several analgesic agents especially in the persistent pain condition. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of cannabidiol microinjection into the NAc on the modulation of nociception induced by formalin injection into the rat's paw. Adult male Wistar rats weighing 220-250 g were underwent stereotaxic surgery for unilatera

The impact of age on long-term behavioral and neurochemical parameters in an animal model of severe sepsis.

This study aimed to evaluate behavioral and neurochemical parameters in adult (180-day-old) and young (60-day-old) rats subjected to sepsis. Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and perforation (CLP). Thirty days after surgery, behavioral tests were performed, and the β-amyloid content, oxidative damage, and cytokine levels were measured in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. In both adult and young rats, sepsis impaired the inhibitory avoidance task performance and increased immobility time in the forced swimming test. However, the adult septic rats had a higher immobility time compared to

Exposure of laboratory animals to small air ions: a systematic review of biological and behavioral studies.

BACKGROUND: Air ions are molecules of air that have become ionized-that is, they have either lost or gained an electrical charge. Past speculation has suggested that exposure to positive air ions may be harmful to one's health, while exposure to negative air ions may be associated with beneficial health effects. Air ions arise from natural sources as well as direct-current transmission lines and commercial ionizers. Several recent clinical studies have suggested therapeutic effects of air ions on various types of depression at exposure levels 10- to 1000-fold higher than most previous human st

Sensory-motor behavioral characterization of an animal model of Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (or Mucopolysaccharidosis VI).

Maroteaux-Lamy disease, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) VI, is an MPS disorder caused by mutations in the ARSB gene encoding for the lysosomal enzyme arysulfatase B (ARSB). Deficient ARSB activity leads to lysosomal accumulation of dermatan sulfate in a wide range of tissues and organs. There are various animal models of MPS VI that have been well characterized from a biochemical and morphological point of view. In this study, we report the sensory-motor characterization of MPS VI rats carrying homozygous null ARSB mutations. We show that adult MPS VI rats are specifically impaired i

Chronic food administration of Salvia sclarea oil reduces animals' anxious and dominant behavior.

Recent studies indicate that an oil extract from Salvia sclarea may provide clinical benefits in various pathological conditions. In comparison to extracts from other Salvia species, S. sclarea oil contains twice as much omega-3 fatty acids, which are involved in eicosanoid synthesis pathways, and has been found to contain significant levels of the psychoactive monoterpane linalool. In the present study, we examined the mood stabilizing and anxiolytic-like effects of chronic food administration of S. sclarea oil extract on behavioral and physiological parameters of mice with prominent dominant

Animal model of autism induced by prenatal exposure to valproate: behavioral changes and liver parameters.

Autism is characterized by behavioral impairments in three main domains: social interaction; language, communication and imaginative play; and range of interests and activities. This syndrome has attracted social attention by its high prevalence. The animal model induced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) has been proposed to study autism. Several characteristics of behavioral abnormalities found in the VPA rats, such as repetitive/stereotypic-like activity and deficit in social interaction have been correlated with autism. Features like flexibility to change strategy, social memory a

Increasing hippocampal acetylcholine levels enhance behavioral performance in an animal model of diencephalic amnesia.

Pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) was used to produce a rodent model of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome that results in acute neurological disturbances, thalamic lesions, and learning and memory impairments. There is also cholinergic septohippocampal dysfunction in the PTD model. Systemic (Experiment 1) and intrahippocampal (Experiment 2) injections of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine were administered to determine if increasing acetylcholine levels would eliminate the behavioral impairment produced by PTD. Prior to spontaneous alternation testing, rats received inject

Analysis of behavioral constraints and the neuroanatomy of fear to the predator odor trimethylthiazoline: a model for animal phobias.

Specific phobias, including animal phobias, are the most common anxiety disorders, and have a strong innate and genetic component. Research on the neurobiology and environmental constraints of innate fear of predators in rodents may be useful in elucidating mechanisms of animal phobias in humans. The present article reviews research on innate fear in rats to trimethylthiazoline (TMT), an odor originally isolated from fox feces. TMT induces unconditioned freezing and other defensive responses that are regulated by the dose of TMT and the shape of the testing environment. Contextual conditioning

Development of a psychobiological nosology for fear and frustration in clinical animal behavior using dogs as a model species.

Assessing emotion is an integral part of the diagnostic process in clinical animal behavior and facilitates more specific management for the related behavior. Fear and frustration are commonly involved in such issues, and clinical animal behaviorists appear to find these emotions challenging to identify and differentiate, with a range of views on the nature of these emotions. This problem is compounded by a lack of consensus definitions for these terms, authors frequently relying on intuitive understanding, and the variability in definitions used, when they are actually defined, within the cli

Low-cost, open-source, full-stack software and Arduino-based hardware for control of commercially available animal behavior systems.

Behavioral neuroscience relies heavily on controlled environments, such as operant chambers or "Skinner boxes," to characterize relationships between external stimuli and the resulting animal behavior. Increasingly, these methodologies are critical for the development of neural interfaces which seek to provide or restore sensations via electrical stimulation. To conduct behavioral experiments, researchers have commonly trusted commercial systems, like those from Med Associates, Inc. While offering reliability, high costs and limited customizability have motivated a push towards open-source alt

Characterizing ingestive behavior through licking microstructure: Underlying neurobiology and its use in the study of obesity in animal models.

Ingestive behavior is controlled by multiple distinct peripheral and central physiological mechanisms that ultimately determine whether a particular food should be accepted or avoided. As rodents consume a fluid they display stereotyped rhythmic tongue movements, and by analyzing the temporal distribution of pauses of licking, it is possible through analyses of licking microstructure to uncover dissociable evaluative and motivational variables that contribute to ingestive behavior. The mean number of licks occurring within each burst of licking (burst and cluster size) reflects the palatabilit
