Preschoolers' Self-Regulation and Behavior Problems in the Midst of Caregiver Depression and Chaos.

OBJECTIVES: Preschoolers' self-regulation is partially developed through home and child care routines. COVID-19-related child care closures increased caregiver depressive symptoms, household chaos, and children's behavior problems. This longitudinal study examined how preschoolers' prepandemic self-regulation was related to behavior problems early in the pandemic, including buffering against the adverse effects of caregiver depressive symptoms and household chaos. METHODS: A sample of 264 caregivers of preschoolers reported on their children's self-regulation (Behavior Rating Inventory of Exe

Impact of Bird-assisted Therapy in Anxious Pediatric Patients during Their First Dental Visit: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Managing a child's behavior is often a major challenge for dentists. In the past, various behavior-modification techniques, such as modeling, tell-show-do, voice control, and desensitization, have shown limited results. Recently, bird-assisted therapy (B-AT) has gained importance in relieving patients' anxiety. This study aimed to examine the effect of the presence of birds on reducing patients' anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial, 40 healthy children aged 4-8 years who were attending their first dental visit were selected. Eligible participan

Suicide attempts are associated with worse quality of life in patients with bipolar disorder type I.

BACKGROUND: The association between suicidal behavior and quality of life (QoL) in bipolar disorder (BD) is poorly understood. Worse QoL has been associated with suicide attempts and suicidal ideation in schizophrenic patients, but this relationship has not been investigated in BD. This study tested whether a history of suicide attempts was associated with poor QoL in a well-characterized sample of patients with BD, as has been observed in other psychiatric disorders and in the general population. METHODS: One hundred eight patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,

Risperidone alone versus risperidone plus valproate in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia and hostility.

The objective of the study was to compare the antiaggressive efficacy of risperidone monotherapy versus risperidone plus valproate in patients with schizophrenia. This was an 8-week open-label randomized parallel group clinical trial in hospitalized adults diagnosed with schizophrenia and with hostile behavior. Patients were randomly assigned to receive risperidone alone (n=16) or risperidone plus valproate (n=17). To minimize bias, raters were blinded to the assigned treatment arm. Outcome measures included the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDH

Similarities and Differences in Diagnostic Scales.

The scale as a diagnostic tool plays an important role in discriminating between addicts and normal subjects. At the beginning of this chapter, we will briefly introduce the development of substance and non-substance addiction scales, which not only include alcohol addiction, nicotine addiction, cannabis addiction, pathological gambling pathological Internet use, but also exercise addiction, sex addiction, and food addiction, which are in dispute. While we will find almost all the addiction scales contain the items on social impairment, preoccupied, withdrawal, and tolerance, the variability i

Risperidone in children with autism: randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study.

Some open-label studies suggest that risperidone can be useful in the treatment of certain target symptoms in children with autism. We aimed to study whether the use of risperidone in comparison with placebo improved functioning in children with autism with regard to behavior (aggressiveness, hyperactivity, irritability), social and emotional responsiveness, and communication skills. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 40 consecutive children with autism, whose ages ranged from 2 to 9 years, who were receiving either risperidone or placebo given orally at a d

Characterization and factors associated with sleep quality in adolescents with bipolar I disorder.

Sleep disturbance is an early marker for bipolar disorder (BD) onset in youth. We characterized sleep quality in adolescents experiencing mania within the last 6-12 months. We examined the association between mood and sleep in 27 adolescents with BD and 24 matched healthy controls (HC). Subjects were assessed by parent and teen report of sleep, a semi-structured clinical interview, the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the Childhood Depression Rating Scale (CDRS-R). Average BD youth YMRS (mean 20.3 ± 7.3) and CDRS-R (mean 42.4 ± 14.1) scores indicated they were still ill at time of assessme
