Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor symptoms, but nonmotor symptoms also significantly impair daily functioning and reduce quality of life. Anxiety is prevalent and debilitating in PD, but remains understudied and undertreated. Much affective research in PD focuses on depression rather than anxiety, and as such, there are no evidence-based treatments for anxiety in this population. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown promise for treating depression in PD and may be efficacious for anxiety. This exploratory study implemented a multiple-baseline single-case experimental d

Evolution of cognitive-behavioral therapy for eating disorders.

The evolution of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimic disorders is described in this review. The impacts of successive attempts to enhance CBT such as the addition of exposure and response prevention; the development of enhanced CBT; and broadening the treatment from bulimia nervosa to binge eating disorder are considered. In addition to developing advanced forms of CBT, shortening treatment to guided self-help was the first step in broadening access to treatment. The use of technology such as computer-based therapy and more recently the Internet, promises further br

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa: An Update.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anorexia nervosa (AN), based on Beck's cognitive theory, was developed in a "generic" form in the early eighties. In recent years, however, improved knowledge of the mechanisms involved in maintaining eating disorder psychopathology has led to the development of a "specific" form of CBT, termed CBT-E (E = enhanced), designed to treat all forms of eating disorders, including AN, from outpatient to inpatient settings. Although more studies are required to assess the relative effectiveness of CBT-E with respect to other available treatments, the data indicat

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa: an illustration.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa (BN) is a well-developed, theoretically grounded treatment for BN with the strongest empirical support for its efficacy of any form of treatment for BN. The treatment package comprises three distinct phases typically delivered over 20 weeks. Incorporating a variety of specific interventions, these three phases of treatment focus systematically on (i) dietary restraint, (ii) dysfunctional beliefs about body weight and shape, and (iii) reactions to recurrence of symptoms, which are thought to be the primary operative mechanisms that cause and main

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for paruresis: a case report.

This article reviews directive interventions for paruresis, the inability to urinate in the proximity of others. As in treatments for other anxiety disorders, historical interventions have included the use of paradoxical intention and several different forms of exposure. The results of pharmacological treatment have not proven promising. Although a multidimensional treatment model has been recommended, little attention has been paid to treating cognitive components of the problem. In this paper, a single case is described in which cognitive components of the problem of paruresis were evident.

The behavior therapies: therapeutic breakthrough or latest fad?

The author critically examines the evidence for the effectiveness of the behavior therapies as described in the American Psychaitric Association's task force report on behavior therapy. He concludes that current attempts to evaluate behavior therapy suffer from inadequate methodology and that the claims for its therapeutic efficacy are excessive and unsupported by the controlled clinical evidence.

Behavioral Eructation Retraining Protocol (BERP): A Novel Adjunct Behavioral Therapy for R-CPD.

OBJECTIVE: Botulinum injection into the cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle is the current standard of treatment for retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD), resulting in lasting symptom resolution for up to 80% of patients. Individuals with incomplete symptom relief after CP botulinum toxin (BTX) injection have few treatment options, including repeat BTX injection, dilation, or myotomy. Investigators sought to explore behavioral intervention to facilitate eructation retraining for individuals with incomplete response to CP BTX injections. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of seven

Reducing behavioral avoidance with internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.

Recent research has sought to identify maladaptive behaviors that are associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Although maladaptive behaviors may contribute to the maintenance of the disorder, little is known about how these behaviors change during the course of cognitive behavior therapy and whether such changes relate to treatment outcomes. This study examined changes in maladaptive behaviors, symptoms of GAD and depression, and disability across internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (iCBT) for GAD in two large clinical samples (N = 206 and 298). Assessments were completed at

Do patients with acne need cognitive behavioral therapy? An analysis of patient knowledge and behavior.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common skin condition that affects adolescents as well as young adults, and numerous treatment modalities have been introduced with various success. However, most of the therapeutic measures have failed to show a long-lasting effect because acne is a multi-factorial disease. Some of the factors can be effectively modified by patients themselves. We hereby present an analysis of patients' cognition of the disease and behavioral patterns that can influence patient compliance and the efficacy of the adjacent therapy. METHODS: The survey was conducted on 136 Korean patients

Risk management in dialectical behavior therapy: Treating life-threatening behaviors as problems to be solved.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported behavioral treatment for individuals with borderline personality disorder who frequently exhibit life-threatening behavior, such as suicide attempts, nonsuicidal self-injury urges and actions, and suicidal ideation. We provide an overview of the theoretical framework by which DBT conceptualizes these life-threatening behaviors and the principles by which safety planning measures are implemented and maintained throughout treatment. The importance of orienting clients to treatment and obtaining their commitment to decrease life-threa

Group dialectical behavior therapy skills training versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with ADHD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and executive dysfunction. Current treatment guidelines recommend a multimodal approach. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven effective for alleviating core symptoms, improving executive functioning, and reducing emotional comorbidities, with benefits sustained for up to one year. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an adaptation of CBT that integrates mindfulness and emotion regulation components, has also shown

Long-term follow-up of acceptance-enhanced behavior therapy for trichotillomania.

Acceptance-enhanced behavior therapy for trichotillomania (AEBT-TTM) is effective in reducing trichotillomania (TTM) symptoms, but the durability of treatment effects remains in question. This study analyzed 6-month follow-up data from a large randomized clinical trial comparing AEBT-TTM to an active psychoeducation and supportive therapy control (PST). Adults with TTM (N=85; 92% women) received 10 sessions of AEBT-TTM or PST across 12 weeks. Independent evaluators assessed participants at baseline, post-treatment, and 6 months follow-up. For both AEBT-TTM and PST, self-reported and evaluator-
