A Case Report of Burning Mouth Syndrome with Dry Mouth Managed by Kampo Medicine.

The patient was a 56-year-old woman who complained of chronic pain involving her tongue. We diagnosed her with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) based on exclusion of any local factors or systemic conditions. The patient not only had tongue pain but also had other signs and symptoms like scalloped tongue, dry mouth, and headache. To manage these additional issues, we used Goreisan, an herbal Kampo medicine, as a complementary alternative medicine (CAM) approach along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The patient's BMS was successfully managed with the combination of CAM and CBT, which may su

Use of herbal medicine related to anxiety and depression in the general population of southeast Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased anxiety/depression and changes in people's health behaviors. This study aimed to investigate health beliefs regarding using herbal medicine and its associated factors among Iranians. A cross-sectional study on the general population in Birjand (southeast Iran) was conducted using a survey questionnaire (an online platform for creating questionnaires, available at https://porsline.ir/) consisting of demographic characteristics and beliefs toward herbal medicine use, as well as a telehealth and hospital anxiety and depression scale questionnaire to addr

Defining Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.

There is an insufficient number of specialty developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) physicians, despite nearly 25% of children and adolescents having a developmental, learning, behavioral, or emotional problem. In the nearly 20 years since becoming a board-certified subspecialty, the definition of DBP clinical practice remains somewhat unclear. This lack of clarity likely contributes to recruitment challenges and workforce issues, and limited visibility of DBP among parents, other professionals, payors, and administrators. Defining DBP is therefore an important step in the survival and grow

A review on traditional Chinese medicine natural products and acupuncture intervention for Alzheimer's disease based on the neuroinflammatory.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with insidious onset and progressive development. It is clinically characterized by cognitive impairment, memory impairment and behavioral change. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are important components of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and are commonly used in clinical treatment of AD. This paper systematically summarizes the research progress of traditional Chinese medicine natural products and acupuncture treatment of AD, which combined with existing clinical and preclinical evidence, based on a comprehensive review of ne

Perception of Canine Welfare Concerns among Veterinary Students, Practitioners, and Behavior Specialists in Spain.

Veterinarians are well placed to supervise and ensure canine welfare. However, the perception of animal welfare among veterinarians may vary depending on the level of training and professional practice, including the specialization in animal behavior and welfare. The aim of this study was to survey the perception of canine welfare among veterinarians, including students, practitioners, and behavior specialists. A scale-based questionnaire including 12 issues affecting canine welfare was adapted from Yeates and Main and distributed to first-year (n=50) and fifth-year veterinary students (n=50),

Prader Willi syndrome: advances in genetics.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder arising from abnormalities on chromosome 15q11.2-q13, characterized by distinct physical, cognitive, and behavioral features that evolve across the lifespan. Early manifestations include severe hypotonia, feeding difficulties, and failure to thrive in infancy, progressing to hyperphagia, obesity, intellectual disabilities, and behavioral challenges in later stages. Additional features include growth hormone deficiency, short stature, delayed puberty, and other endocrine abnormalities. Genetic advances have illuminated the role of imprin

Anger and the heart: perspectives on cardiac risk, mechanisms and interventions.

In the popular imagination, anger has long been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but empirical validation from case-control and prospective studies emerged only in the 1970's. After describing the multidimensional nature of anger and its assessment (via self-report or observed in structured interviews), this paper selectively reviews evidence in (a) behavioral epidemiology, (b) stress and biological processes with implications for cardiopathogenesis, and (c) behavioral/pharmacological interventions for anger/hostility reduction. Although evidence is inconsistent, chronic feelings of an

The good doctor: professionalism in the 21st century.

Medical professionalism faces distinctive challenges in the 21st century. In this chapter, we review the history of professionalism, address specific challenges physicians face today, and provide an overview of efforts to address these issues, including behavioral and virtue ethics approaches. First, we discuss core features professions share and the development of codes of medical ethics that guide the practice of western medicine. Second, we address challenges related to the doctor-patient relationship, continuity of care, cultural competence, conflicts of interest, and the regulation of qua

The MOTHER study as a foundation for advancing perinatal opioid use disorder treatment: Clinical guidelines and the evolving research landscape.

The Maternal Opioid Treatment: Human Experimental Research (MOTHER) study was a rigorous randomized controlled trial that compared methadone and buprenorphine for the treatment of pregnant women with opioid use disorder. Since the primary outcomes were published in 2010, this study has served as a cornerstone of the evidence base guiding both clinical practice and national and international health policy. This commentary examines MOTHER's contributions to the global policy landscape and also traces the scholarly advances it catalyzed, including advances in neonatal abstinence syndrome research

The effects of xylazine on locomotion and motor behaviour in a planarian model.

In recent years, the recreational use of xylazine has increased dramatically in the USA. Although xylazine has been used as an anesthetic in veterinary medicine for decades, little is known about its behavioral effects. We took advantage of the planarian's innate negative phototaxis, the reliable movement from the light side to the dark side of a Petri dish, to explore the organism's suitability as an animal model for investigating the preclinical pharmacology of xylazine. In two experiments, we tested the effects of several doses of xylazine on locomotion by recording the latency to transitio

The Future of Psychocardiology: From Psychosocial Risk to Mechanism-Based Care.

Psychocardiology has established psychosocial factors as contributors to cardiovascular risk, symptom burden, and prognosis. Although mechanistic research is growing, causal evidence remains inconsistent, while broad constructs, cross-sectional designs, and insufficiently specified pathways still limit clinical translation and treatment selection. The future lies in mechanism-based care that identifies modifiable biological, psychological, behavioral, and social processes linking psychosocial factors and cardiovascular disease bidirectionally. Mechanisms are temporally ordered causal processes

Role of oral medicine in the teaching of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain.

This paper discusses the role of oral medicine in the teaching of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain. Education in orofacial pain and TMD has traditionally been managed in academic dental settings as 2 distinct processes separate from the teaching of diagnosis and management as applied to systemic diseases and oral conditions. The rationale for such a segmented approach appears to have been driven by the concept that orofacial pain usually reflects a localized disease rather than arising as a component of more generalized systemic disease or modulated in intensity or morbidit

Treatment of somatization in primary care.

A large proportion of patients present to primary care with chronic, stress-related symptoms having no organic cause. Biomedical treatment of these patients is usually ineffective and expensive. A 6-week behavioral medicine intervention designed to provide adjunctive treatment to primary care was evaluated in a randomized, controlled study. Thirty-eight individuals receiving treatment and 44 waiting for treatment completed the SCL-90-R at times corresponding to 1 week before (time 1) and 1 week after the course (time 2). The treatment group was then followed up at 6 months. After correction fo

Effect of Ninjin-yoei-to (Rensheng-Yangrong-Tang) on olfactory behavior after olfactory nerve transection.

Ninjin-yoei-to (NYT), a Japanese traditional medicine, is used to treat athrepsia due to surgery, anorexia, cold constitution, and anemia. There are reports of the effects of NYT on the nervous system; however, there have been no behavioral studies of the effect of NYT on olfactory function. The olfactory system undergoes continuous replacement of sensory neurons. Morphologic and behavioral studies have shown that the olfactory system recovers after bilateral olfactory nerve transection (BNX). However, in the humans, olfactory function does not always recover. In this study, we examined the ef

Microbiome-metabolomics deciphers the effects of Cistanche deserticola polysaccharides on aged constipated rats.

Chronic constipation is an extremely common gastrointestinal disorder that severely affects the life quality of the elderly. As an edible food and therapeutic medicine, Cistanche deserticola (CD) has been widely used not only as food in daily life, but also as a medicine to treat constipation. As the main component in CD, polysaccharide shows great potentials in improving constipation in the elderly. In this study, 16S rRNA analysis and fecal metabolomics were applied to investigate the impacts of constipation in an aged rat model, as well as the regulatory effects and the underlying mechanism

Integrating Psychological Care into Pediatric Sports Medicine: Levels of Collaboration and Common Referral Concerns.

UNLABELLED: It is well established that psychological factors impact sport injuries, recovery, and return to sport among youth athletes. Medical associations and sport governing bodies have advocated for the assessment and intervention of mental health concerns among athletes. However, there is less research on methods of incorporating pediatric psychology services within sports medicine (SM) settings. By drawing on the framework of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-Health Resources and Services Administration for understanding and implementing medical and behaviora

Examination of the AHA!-Illness relation in male and female university students from Australia, India, and the United States.

The search for the link between negative emotions and later health problems continues to be a dominant theme in behavioral medicine. Although researchers have identified significant relations between illness and anger, most studies focus selectively on one anger domain: either the affective, attitudinal, or behavioral component. In this study, we first related all three components of the AHA! (anger, hostility, and aggressive behavior) syndrome to somatic complaint reports in a male and female young adult population drawn from three countries. In subsequent analyses, we related multidimensiona
