Interventions for Transition-Related Challenging Behavior in Individuals with Disabilities: A Targeted Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis of Studies Published in Behavior Analytic Journals.

Transition-related challenging behavior is common among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly during changes between activities. Two hypothesized controlling variables-unpredictability and negative incentive shifts-may contribute to the occurrence of these behaviors. This targeted research synthesis and meta-analysis identified studies published in behavior-analytic journals examining interventions developed to decrease transition-related challenging behavior. Nineteen experiments across sixteen peer-reviewed articles were included in the targeted research

Behavioral approaches for reducing agitation in residents of long-term-care facilities: critical review and suggestions for future research.

Many residents in long-term-care facilities demonstrate agitated behaviors. Research on behavioral approaches for reducing agitation in nursing home residents has been conducted during the past 25 years. This research is critically reviewed in this article and suggestions for future research are offered. Empirical evidence suggests that behavioral approaches are effective. Antecedent control strategies have been shown to reduce physically nonaggressive behaviors. Both aggressive and verbally agitated behaviors have been successfully treated by manipulating reinforcing consequences of these beh

How much habituation is enough? An R application for ad hoc content-related limits of acceptance in behavioral research.

Evaluating test-retest reliability is of crucial importance for clinical decision-making and an integral component of studies in empirical sciences. In psychology, classical test theory focused on reliability coefficients, but research has shown that intraclass correlation coefficients and Cronbach's alpha have limited value in quantifying individual measurement error sources appropriately. Preliminary assumptions such as parallel readings and independency of error sources are violated by practice/habituation effects, i.e., test-retest systematic errors. Although awareness of the need for addi

Fentanyl-Related Substance Use Patterns, Morbidity, and Mortality Among Adolescents and Young Adults: Implications for Behavioral Health Services Research.

This commentary discusses best practices for responding to fentanyl-related overdose deaths in adolescents and young adults, and it outlines the current state of knowledge about them. Various types of approaches to fentanyl-related overdoses in this age group may need to be developed based on the different risk factors that are emerging from the existing data. We describe the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) behavioral health services research priorities connected with fentanyl-related overdoses in youth. We highlight a key target for intervention and discuss research opportunities rela

Lessons From the West Africa Ebola Epidemic: A Systematic Review of Epidemiological and Social and Behavioral Science Research Priorities.

This systematic literature review compared the epidemiological (EPI) research and the qualitative social and behavioral science (SBS) research published during the West Africa Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic. Beginning with an initial capture of over 2000 articles, we extracted 236 EPI and 171 SBS studies to examine how disciplinary priorities affected research conducted during the EVD response, with implications for epidemic response effectiveness. Building on this research, we set forth a roadmap for the closer integration of EPI and SBS research in all aspects of epidemic preparedness an

A Scoping Review of the Peer-Reviewed Research on Alternative First Response for Mental and Behavioral Health Crisis and Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: Alternative first response programs (i.e., non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls involving mental or behavioral health crisis) have expanded rapidly, but implementation has outpaced development of an empirical evidence base. This scoping review assessed the current state of peer-reviewed research on these programs, including how they are defined and studied, and where gaps remain. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR, a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies was conducted. Eligible studies described non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls for service involving mental or beh

Salivary/Serum Progesterone Ratio Differs Between Menstrual Cycle Phases but Not Between Populations: Implications for Health, Reproductive, and Behavioral Research.

OBJECTIVES: Many investigations of human health, behaviors, and adaptations require an indicator of ovarian cycle functioning as a causal, outcome, or confounding variable in the study design and analyses. Because the dynamic fluctuations in cycle hormones can rarely be adequately characterized by a single measurement, but repeated blood sampling can be onerous, salivary free progesterone (PFree-SAL) concentration is widely used in both clinical and research contexts as an alternative to total progesterone concentration in venous blood samples (PTotal-VEN). However, some doubts have been raise

HIV Testing and Prevention Services in Behavioral Health Organizations: A Multi-method Study Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Despite the well-established need to increase access to HIV testing and prevention services among people with serious mental illness, little is known about the determinants of implementation of these services in behavioral health organizations. This multi-method study was conducted in King County, Washington, an EHE priority jurisdiction. A quantitative survey of 16 county behavioral health organizations explored the HIV testing and prevention services currently offered. Three organizations that viewed HIV testing and prevention services as very important or essential for their clients partici

Ziskind-Somerfeld Research Award 1993. Biochemical, behavioral, and clinical studies of the role of inositol in lithium treatment and depression.

Lithium (Li) reduces brain inositol levels by inhibiting the enzyme inositol monophosphatase. The enzyme inositol-1-phosphatase was measured in human red blood cells of controls, Li-free bipolar patients, and Li-treated bipolar patients and was found to be reduced by 80% in Li-treated bipolars, thus supporting the concept that chronic Li at therapeutic concentrations inhibits this enzyme. Two behaviors in rats caused by Li, reduction of rearing, and Li-pilocarpine seizures, are reversed by intracerebroventricular replenishment of inositol. The reversal is stereospecific to the naturally occurr

What does the internet mean to older adults? Evidence from research on health information behavior.

As the amount of health information available on the Internet continues to expand (such as digital health records, online consultation services, and support groups), people have more opportunities to enhance their daily well-being. Meanwhile, the Internet became integral to accessing health information and services during and after COVID-19. The evidence regarding the Internet's impact on improving the well-being of older adults, however, is mixed and inconsistent in academic research. To address these inconsistencies and better understand the Internet's role, this integrative review synthesiz

Establishment and Validation of a CUMS Model for Depression-like Behavior in Honeybees: A Tool for Pollinator Stress Research.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera), as key pollinating insects, are undergoing population decline, which has become a critical environmental challenge affecting ecosystem stability and sustainable agriculture. Moreover, a potential association exists between the physiological and behavioral responses of honeybees induced by environmental stress and the pathological mechanisms of depression. The pathogenesis of depression remains complex and not fully understood, and a stable animal model is a prerequisite for investigating its mechanisms and screening antidepressants. This study aimed to examine the a

Developing and Assessing the Performance of a Machine Learning Model for Analyzing Drinking Behaviors in Minipigs for Experimental Research.

Monitoring experimental animals is essential for ethical, scientific, and financial reasons. Conventional observation methods are limited by subjectivity and time constraints. Camera-based monitoring combined with machine learning offers a promising solution for automating the monitoring process. This study aimed to validate and assess the performance of a machine learning model for analyzing drinking behavior in minipigs. A novel, vision-based monitoring system was developed and tested to detect drinking behavior in minipigs. The system, based on low-cost Raspberry Pi units, enabled on-site v

Pathways to Crime and Antisocial Behavior: A Critical Analysis of Psychological Research and a Call for Broader Ecological Perspectives.

The United States has one of the highest rates of correctional supervision among all nations in the world, reflecting the disproportionate incarceration of racial minorities and economically disadvantaged groups. Scholars have emphasized the role of structural factors and governmental policies in long-term shifts in crime and incarceration. However, much of the psychological research on crime and antisocial behaviors has not deeply considered this broader context, focusing mostly on individual and proximal environmental risk factors. This article presents a novel synthesis of large cross-disci

Community-Based Participatory Research: Involving Young People with Lived Experiences of Problematic Sexual Behaviors.

Community advisory boards bridge the gap between researchers and community members to yield the most informed and successful implementation of prevention services. Youth community advisory boards demonstrate the same research-community member benefit but forming them presents unique challenges that often limit their use. In this article, we present lessons learned from a participatory research study in which we engage young people with problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) in an anonymous community advisory board and interviews. After completing a survey, 16 interview participants and five adviso

Research note: Expert opinions of feather sucking and licking behavior in meat chicken breeder birds.

Feather sucking, or feather licking, has been reported anecdotally by employees in the Australian meat chicken breeder industry, but scarcely in the scientific literature. Consequently, the causes and implications of this behavior in meat chicken breeding chickens is relatively unknown. We surveyed 17 industry experts to generate hypotheses about feather sucking behavior. We aimed to understand the frequency and when it occurs, and attempted to understand what may cause an "outbreak". The recruitment of participants was intentionally biased towards Australian perspectives; only 5 of the 17 par
