BACKGROUND: Understanding the risk factors of hypertension among women of reproductive age (18-44 years) is important for guiding health programs aimed at reducing the burden of hypertensive disorders in this population. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate predictors of self-reported hypertension among women of reproductive age in North Dakota.
METHODS: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data for the years 2017, 2019, and 2021 were obtained from North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services. A conceptual model was used to identify potential predictors of h

Transgender individuals represent a vulnerable population with unique healthcare needs. Despite facing health disparities, there is limited research on the characteristics and stroke risk factors among transgender stroke survivors. We extracted and analyzed data from the 2020-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to study stroke risk factors among transgender stroke survivors and to compare them to cisgender stroke survivors. cisgender stroke survivors were paired with transgender stroke survivors using a 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM) ratio. Demographic characteristics,

Since West Nile virus (WNV) was first recognized in the United States in 1999, the geographic distribution has widened progressively, and the resulting human morbidity and mortality has increased. The cornerstones of WNV control and prevention are 1) surveillance with sustained and integrated mosquito control to detect the presence of WNV in areas where humans are at risk and 2) public education on the use of personal protective behaviors (PPBs) and peridomestic mosquito control to reduce the risk for mosquito bites. In Connecticut, strategies to improve public education and WNV-risk awareness

Problem and pathological gambling refers to subclinical and clinical levels of maladaptive gambling, respectively, and is associated with specific sociodemographic characteristics as well as a number of poor health outcomes. We examined such demographic, physical health, mental health, and health-related behaviors in a sample of 7045 low-risk gamblers and 244 problem/pathological gamblers. Participants completed the 2014 North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System telephone survey. Rising concerns over public health and chronic disease prevalence have intensified the demand for data-driven, personalized fitness interventions. While national health programs offer general guidelines, they often lack the granularity required to address individual variability in health status, lifestyle, and demographic context. This paper presents a machine learning framework to generate personalized fitness recommendations aligned with national health goals. Leveraging population-scale data, the aim is to optimize physical activity planning while maintaining fairness and clinical relevance

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the factor structure of nine health-related quality of life (HRQOL) survey items among people with and without disabilities or functional limitations (FL) and determine whether factor loadings were similar for the two groups.
METHODS: Data were from US states and territories in the 2001 and 2002 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Confirmatory factor analyses assessed fit of the data to a previously found factor structure.
RESULTS: A two-factor structure was confirmed, conceptually representing physical and mental health. Alt

BACKGROUND: The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) expanded substantially from 2009 through 2010 to increase dental workforce supply in dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). However, to the authors' knowledge, no past studies have empirically examined the expansion's impact on dental care use.
METHODS: The authors used a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences design to compare dental care use among adults residing in counties always designated as whole-county HPSAs (ie, shortage counties) with counties never receiving HPSA designation (ie, nonshortage counties) from 2006

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between depressed mood and clusters of health risk behaviors.
METHODS: A nationally representative sample of adolescents (N=15,214) was utilized to construct 10 pseudocontinuous health risk behaviors. Cluster analysis was performed to group adolescents, and subsequent multivariable logistic models were created.
RESULTS: Compared to non-risk takers, belonging to risk clusters significantly increased the odds of reporting depressed mood. African Americans in high-risk clusters appeared to be more vulnerable to depressed mood, when compared to remaining ra

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), including birth defects that involve central nervous system impairment, behavioral disorders, and impaired intellectual development, which can lead to difficulties with school and employment. A recent study in four U.S. communities found a 1.1%-5.0% prevalence of FASDs among first-grade students (1). Drinking during pregnancy might also be a risk factor for other adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, including miscarriage and stillbirth (2). CDC estimated the prevalence of self-reported current drinking (at l

BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that those who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are at increased risk of adverse behaviors and health indicators, such as certain chronic physical and mental health conditions. However, little is known about the prevalence of these behaviors and health indicators among these individuals, information that could help decrease their risk of developing such conditions.METHODS Data (N = 4733) from the 2018 North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were analyzed to determine the prevalence of behaviors and health indicators among indi

Poor mental health accounts for an estimated $300 billion in medical, pharmaceutical, and workplace- and suicide-related costs in the United States each year; promoting physical activity is an evidence-based approach to improving mental health. Identifying geographic groups with high prevalences of frequent mental distress and physical inactivity could help focus strategies that improve both outcomes. Young adults aged 18-29 years experience the highest prevalence of mental health conditions compared with other adult age groups. Using 2012-2024 data for adults aged 18-29 years from the Behavio

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major public health problems globally. Key risk factors for TB include poverty, living conditions such as overcrowding, and the presence and prevalence of significant biological and behavioral risk factors that impair the immune system or contribute to additional biological risk factors. Wars and disasters increase the risk of developing TB mainly due to population movement and displacement into overcrowded camps and temporary shelters, destruction of infrastructure, breakdown of health services, or discontinuation of ongoing treatment for human immunodefic

OBJECTIVE: This study identified correlates of self-reports of being very depressed in the months after delivery in a population-based sample of women.
METHODS: We analyzed data on 14,609 recent mothers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). The sample included mothers who delivered a live birth in Colorado, New York State, and North Carolina from 1996 (New York only) to 1999. We assessed risk factors for self-reports of being very depressed in the months after delivery using logistic regression.
RESULTS: Overall, 5.9%

We investigated health, economic, and social disparities among transgender adults (transgender women, men, and nonbinary) aged 18 years and older. Using population-based data from the Washington State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (WA-BRFSS), we pooled 2016 through 2019 data (n = 47,894). We estimated weighted distributions and prevalence by gender identity for background characteristics, economic, social and health indicators. We performed regressions of these indicators on gender identity, including transgender versus cisgender adults and transgender nonbinary adults compared to

Transgender identities and health are highly politicized in the United States leading to restrictions on relevant data collection in national health surveillance systems. This has serious implications on transgender population health research; an urgent area of study given the systemic discrimination faced by transgender individuals and the resultant social and health inequities. In this precarious political climate, obtaining high-quality data for research is challenging and in recent years, two data sources have formed the foundation of transgender health research in the United States, namel

IMPORTANCE: State-specific information about the health burden of smoking is valuable because state-level initiatives are at the forefront of tobacco control. Smoking-attributable cancer mortality estimates are currently available nationally and by cancer, but not by state.
OBJECTIVE: To calculate the proportion of cancer deaths among adults 35 years and older that were attributable to cigarette smoking in 2014 in each state and the District of Columbia.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The population-attributable fraction (PAF) of cancer deaths due to cigarette smoking was computed using
