Modeling behavioral and neuronal symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in mice: a role for intraneuronal amyloid.

The amyloid Abeta-peptide (Abeta) is suspected to play a critical role in the cascade leading to AD as the pathogen that causes neuronal and synaptic dysfunction and, eventually, cell death. Therefore, it has been the subject of a huge number of clinical and basic research studies on this disease. Abeta is typically found aggregated in extracellular amyloid plaques that occur in specific brain regions enriched in nAChRs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down syndrome (DS) brains. Advances in the genetics of its familiar and sporadic forms, together with those in gene transfer technology, have pr

Different rates of improvement of different symptoms in combined pharmacological and behavioral treatment of agoraphobia.

This study was designed to see whether the high vs low serum level of imipramine influenced the outcome of in vivo exposure therapy on patients with agoraphobia. Thirty-six subjects completed the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-90 one week before treatment and weekly throughout treatment. Both groups demonstrated equal improvement. It was noted that the rate of improvement differed for different symptom subscales: (1) Hostility, Paranoia and Psychotic symptom ratings improved over the first three weeks of treatment, (2) Interpersonal Sensitivity, Anxiety and Depression ratings improved throughout th

Differential associations of passively sensed behaviors with in-vivo depression symptoms.

Research suggests that passively sensed behaviors can serve as indicators for depression in aggregate-however, depression is a multifaceted construct, individual facets of which may differentially relate to sensed features. We examined relationships of in-vivo individual depression facets (affect, stress, fatigue, and distractibility) with passively sensed location, communication, and phone-use data. Participants (N = 734, 73.57% female, Mage = 41.6) with moderate depression symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-8; M = 13.2) responded to ecological momentary assessments of affect, stress, fat

Orthorexia symptoms and disordered eating behaviors in young women with cancer.

OBJECTIVE: A cancer diagnosis can motivate people to modify behaviors believed to influence prognosis or recurrence risk, including their eating habits. Orthorexia is a type of disordered eating that involves an extreme fixation on healthy eating. The current study examined: 1) the presence of orthorexia symptoms and disordered eating behavior in young adult women with cancer; 2) factors associated with orthorexia and disordered eating behaviors; and 3) the type and frequency of eating behavior changes made following cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Young adult women with cancer participated in an

Gambling symptoms, behaviors, and cognitive distortions in Japanese university students.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between symptoms of gambling problems, gambling behaviours, and cognitive distortions among a university student population in Japan ages 20 to 29 years. We aimed to address the gap in knowledge of gambling disorders and treatment for this population. METHODS: Data were obtained from 1471 Japanese undergraduate students from 19 universities in Japan. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical multivariate regression analysis were used to investigate whether the factors of gambling cognitive distortions would have predictive eff

Association of problem behavior with sleep problems and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.

BACKGROUND: There are few large-scale epidemiologic studies examining the associations between sleep problems, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, lifestyle and food habits and problem behaviors (PB) in adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations among these factors in Japanese adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1840 junior high school students was carried out using questionnaires. The subjects were classified into PB or normal behavior (NB) groups using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC). The scores of the sleep-related factors, sleep br

Is increased sexual behavior a symptom of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents?

While there is consensus that bipolar disorder exists in children and adolescents, its diagnostic criteria are debated. Excessive sexual behavior has been reported in youth who may have juvenile bipolar disorder (JBD), and has been termed "hypersexuality." Although there is no universal definition of this term, this observation has led to a hypothesis that increased sexual behavior characterizes the bipolar syndrome in children and adolescents, and differentiates it from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Although this hypothesis is plausible, evidence for it is incomplete, because test

Modifying shyness-related social behavior through symptom misattribution.

An experimental misattribution paradigm proved to be a significant intervention treatment of altering social participation among dispositionally shy women. When specific arousal symptoms previously associated with their social anxiety were misattributed to a nonpsychological source, high-frequency noise, these extremely shy women behaved as if they were not shy. Their verbal fluency and interactional assertiveness resembled that of not-shy comparison women given the same treatment. Moreover, their scores on these measures were significantly elevated from the low levels recorded by shy controls

Implementing Electroconvulsive Therapy for Patients Experiencing Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has long been used to treat behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). However, there are no guidelines for the use of ECT in this population. Contributing to efforts addressing this gap in the literature, this qualitative systematic review examines areas of consensus and disagreement in currently published protocols for the use of ECT in BPSD. METHODS: MEDLINE and PsychInfo were searched for primary and secondary literature meeting the aim of this review. All articles were screened, full-text reviewed, and extracted in duplicate. A f

Effects of the WeCareAdvisor Web App on Behavioral Symptoms and Caregiver Outcomes: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonpharmacological strategies are first-line treatments for behavioral symptoms, the most distressful aspect of dementia care. Few caregivers have knowledge of or access to effective strategies. We tested the effects of WeCareAdvisor, a web app to help caregivers problem-solve and identify nonpharmacological strategies to manage behaviors. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Two hundred and sixty-two community-living caregivers of people with dementia. METHODS: Prospective two-group randomized trial comparing immediate app users (N = 131) to 3-month delayed app users (controls, N = 131). Inter

Poor family finances, family-based adverse childhood experiences, and depressive and behavioral symptoms in adolescence.

PURPOSE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a possible pathway through which poor family finances influences adolescents' behavioral and mental health problems. However, the interrelationship between family finances, ACEs, and behavioral and mental health outcomes in adolescence has received little attention. We aimed to (1) document exposure to family-based ACEs by perceived family finances (PFF), (2) examine how PFF relates to cumulative and pattern-based approaches to ACEs, and (3) assess the direct and interactive associations between PFF and ACEs in relation with behavioral and ment

Pasteurized akkermansia muciniphila improves irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms and related behavioral disorders in mice.

Gut - brain communications disorders in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are associated with intestinal microbiota composition, increased gut permeability, and psychosocial disturbances. Symptoms of IBS are difficult to medicate, and hence much research is being made into alternative approaches. This study assesses the potential of a treatment with pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila for alleviating IBS-like symptoms in two mouse models of IBS with different etiologies. Two clinically relevant animal models were used to mimic IBS-like symptoms in C57BL6/J mice: the neonatal maternal separation (
