Household Air Pollution Exposure and Influence of Lifestyle on Respiratory Health and Lung Function in Belizean Adults and Children: A Field Study.

Household air pollution (HAP) contributes to the global burden of disease. Our primary purpose was to determine whether HAP exposure was associated with reduced lung function and respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms in Belizean adults and children. Our secondary purpose was to investigate whether lifestyle (physical activity (PA) and fruit and vegetable consumption (FV)) is associated with reported symptoms. Belizean adults (n = 67, 19 Male) and children (n = 23, 6 Male) from San Ignacio Belize and surrounding areas participated in this cross-sectional study. Data collection took place at

Use of Advanced Diagnostics for Timely Identification of Travel-associated Leptospira santarosai Infection in Four Adolescents Through Plasma Microbial Cell-free DNA Sequencing With the Karius Test.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is an important zoonotic infection worldwide. Diagnosis of leptospirosis is challenging given its nonspecific clinical symptoms that overlap with other acute febrile illnesses and limitations with conventional diagnostic testing. Alternative advanced diagnostics, such as microbial cell-free DNA (mcfDNA), are increasingly being used to aid in the diagnosis of infections and can be applied to pathogens with public health importance such as Leptospira , a nationally notifiable disease. METHODS: The Karius Test uses plasma mcfDNA sequencing to detect and quantify DNA-bas

Habitat-mediated noise pollution reduction in seagrass meadows.

Despite widespread effects of anthropogenic noise on marine organisms, it is still unclear how the propagation of noise is influenced by habitat degradation. Here, we used field experiments to evaluate habitat-mediated reduction of noise pollution. We conducted habitat characterizations, faunal surveys, and transmission loss measurements at sites in subtropical and tropical seagrass ecosystems, across a range of habitat conditions. We found that recreational boat noise was reduced more at sites with denser habitats. For example, in Belize, a site with almost total coverage of seagrasses and at

Longitudinal impacts of habitat fragmentation on Bartonella and hemotropic Mycoplasma dynamics in vampire bats.

Habitat fragmentation can have negative impacts on wildlife including increased risk of infectious disease. To assess spatiotemporal changes in pathogen dynamics in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in response to habitat fragmentation, we used general linear mixed models to investigate the influence of site, year, and tree cover on the prevalence of Bartonella and hemotropic Mycoplasma (hemoplasma) in bats in one large and one small forest fragment in northern Belize across seven years. Bartonella was marginally more prevalent in later years, while year and site differences in hemoplasma infec

Isopods infesting Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) host novel viruses, including reoviruses related to global pathogens, and opportunistically feed on humans.

Isopods infest fish worldwide, but their role as disease vectors remains poorly understood. Here, we describe infestation of Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) in Belize with isopods in two of three locations studied, with infestation rates of 15 and 44%. Isopods fed aggressively, and infested fish showed missing scales and scars. Gross morphologic and molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed the isopods to cluster within the family Aegidae and to be most closely related to members of the genus Rocinela, which are globally distributed micro-predators of fish. Metagenomic analysis of 10 isopods

Manilkara zapota "chicozapote" as a fruit source of health-beneficial bioactive compounds and its effects on chronic degenerative and infectious diseases, a review.

Manilkara zapota "chicozapote" is an autochthonous evergreen tree from the Southern regions of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Currently, it is widely distributed and extensively grown in Mexico and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, different structures of the plant have been used for medical purposes; seeds have diuretic and purgative properties, aiding in digestive complications and eliminating bladder and kidney stones. Tree bark has antidiarrheal, antipyretic, antibiotic, and astringent properties. Fruits and leaves have been used to treat cold, cough, diarrhea, indigestion, fever, hemorrhages

Livestock abundance predicts vampire bat demography, immune profiles and bacterial infection risk.

Human activities create novel food resources that can alter wildlife-pathogen interactions. If resources amplify or dampen, pathogen transmission probably depends on both host ecology and pathogen biology, but studies that measure responses to provisioning across both scales are rare. We tested these relationships with a 4-year study of 369 common vampire bats across 10 sites in Peru and Belize that differ in the abundance of livestock, an important anthropogenic food source. We quantified innate and adaptive immunity from bats and assessed infection with two common bacteria. We predicted that

Microbial Distortion? Impacts of Delayed Preservation on Microbiome Diversity and Composition in a Marine Invertebrate.

Field collections of marine invertebrates are often accompanied by delays in preservation, which may impact microbiome composition. Here, we tested the effects of delayed preservation and relaxation methods on microbiome diversity and composition in the colonial ascidian Trididemnum solidum using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Replicate samples collected from Belizean reefs were either (1) immediately preserved in ethanol ("control"), (2) held in ambient seawater for 3 h before preservation ("SW"), or (3) held in ambient seawater with menthol (a common pre-preservation relaxation technique for

Efficacy of Cannabis and its Constituents in Disease Management: Insights from Clinical Studies.

There is a long history of informal use of Cannabis sativa (commonly called cannabis) for many purposes, including treating various ailments worldwide. However, the legalization of cannabis in multiple countries, specifically for medical purposes, has grabbed the researchers' attention to discover the scientific evidence regarding cannabis's beneficial effects. Among over 500 identified compounds (cannabinoids), Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are two major active cannabinoids derived from cannabis. Cannabinoids exert their effects through cannabinoid receptors (CB1R and CB

Cloning and differential expression of estrogen receptor and aromatase genes in the self-fertilizing hermaphrodite and male mangrove rivulus, Kryptolebias marmoratus.

The mechanisms underlying sex determination and differentiation in fishes are labile in response to environmental parameters. Sex-specific phenotypes are largely regulated by sex steroids, and the inhibition or the stimulation of aromatase can reverse sex as well as alter secondary sexual characteristics in fishes. Among vertebrates, the mangrove rivulus is the only known self-fertilizing hermaphrodite. Throughout most of its range, rivulus appear to exist as clonally reproducing hermaphrodites. However, outcrossing has been documented in Belize, where up to 25% of rivulus collected are males.

Dietary assessment tools for children and adolescents in Latin America: a scoping review.

Accurately assessing dietary intake in children and adolescents is essential for understanding dietary patterns and informing public health strategies. In Latin America, rapid nutrition transitions and increasing childhood obesity highlight the need for culturally appropriate, validated dietary assessment tools (DATs). However, methodological challenges and limited regional data hinder effective dietary surveillance. This scoping review identified and characterised DATs used among children and adolescents (5-18 years) in Latin America, examining tool types, features, validation and regional co

Reframing West Nile Virus in Latin America: From Enzootic Evidence to Human Risk-Surveillance Gaps and One Health Actions.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus with one of the widest global distributions. Since its discovery in Uganda in 1937, it has become a major zoonotic pathogen, and after its introduction into the United States in 1999, it spread rapidly across the Americas, becoming the leading cause of neuroinvasive arboviral disease. Its expansion illustrates a remarkable ecological adaptability, further intensified by climate change. In Latin America and the Caribbean, WNV circulation has been consistently documented in birds, horses, and mosquitoes; however, confirmed human cases remain d

Characteristics of Hand Hygiene Adherence in Selected Healthcare Settings in Latin America and East Africa as Part of COVID-19 Response Efforts, 2020-2021.

Proper hand hygiene (HH) is crucial to prevent healthcare-associated infections, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which disproportionately affects patients in low-and middle-income countries. As part of COVID-19 response, we evaluated key factors associated with HH practices in healthcare facilities (HCF) across five countries. From December 2020 to June 2021, we observed HH practices among healthcare personnel in 88 HCFs; observations occurred before and after patient contact. HH adherence (HHA) was defined as the use of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) or handwashing with soap and

Methods to measure quality of care and quality indicators through health facility surveys in low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: Present methods to measure standardized, replicable and comparable metrics to measure quality of medical care in low- and middle-income countries. DESIGN: We constructed quality indicators for maternal, neonatal and child care. To minimize reviewer judgment, we transformed criteria from check-lists into data points and decisions into conditional algorithms. Distinct criteria were established for each facility level and type of care. Indicators were linked to discharge diagnoses. We designed electronic abstraction tools using computer-assisted personal interviewing software. SETTIN

Genetic diversity, infection prevalence, and possible transmission routes of Bartonella spp. in vampire bats.

Bartonella spp. are globally distributed bacteria that cause endocarditis in humans and domestic animals. Recent work has suggested bats as zoonotic reservoirs of some human Bartonella infections; however, the ecological and spatiotemporal patterns of infection in bats remain largely unknown. Here we studied the genetic diversity, prevalence of infection across seasons and years, individual risk factors, and possible transmission routes of Bartonella in populations of common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Peru and Belize, for which high infection prevalence has previously been reported.
