BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Reduction of benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics (BZDs and Z-drugs) prescribing is a priority. Dundee, Scotland, has a total of 25 general practices, split into four clusters. The cluster with the highest recorded prescribing of BZDs and Z-drugs adopted a prescribing protocol that aimed to reduce such prescribing. This paper evaluates the impact of this protocol.

The mechanisms underlying benzodiazepine antagonism of opioid antinociception were studied using the tail flick test and the hot plate test in mice. Both single-dose and repeated diazepam treatment antagonized the antinociceptive effect of morphine. An endogenous brain substance that binds to the central-type benzodiazepine receptors with agonist properties is present in both rat and bovine brains. BACKGROUND: The use of benzodiazepines as a treatment for insomnia can have side effects such as impaired coordination causing falls in adults and even dependence.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the factors associated with dependence on benzodiazepines in patients with insomnia.
METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional, prospective, and analytical study, at the first level of care. Patients older than 18 years with a diagnosis of insomnia and a benzodiazepine prescription were selected. The dependency was measured with the International Neuropsychiatric Interview.
RESULTS: 107 patients were included.

Dementia is considered a clinical syndrome characterized by cognitive dysfunction and memory loss. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. We propose that discussions of benzodiazepines in the current psychiatric literature have become negatively biased and have strayed from the scientific evidence base. We advocate returning to the evidence in discussing benzodiazepines and adhering to clear definitions and conceptual rigour in commentary about them.

AIMS: To search for pharmaceutical additives in illicit alcoholic beverages referred to the laboratory of Legal Medicine Organization in Iran in 2017.
