Analysis of UNOS: Berlin Heart Bridge to Transplant in Acquired vs Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated long-term survival in pediatric patients who were bridged to transplantation with the Berlin Heart ventricular assist device by comparing patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) with patients with acquired heart disease (AHD). METHODS: The United Network for Organ Sharing Database was queried for patients (aged <18 years) who received a heart transplant in the United States and were preoperatively supported with the Berlin Heart ventricular assist device. Patients were stratified by a diagnosis of AHD vs CHD. Univariable and multivariable analyses were pe

Relationship between Lipoprotein (a) and cognitive function - Results from the Berlin Aging Study II.

It has been suggested that an age-related loss of cognitive function might be driven by atherosclerotic effects associated with altered lipid patterns. However, the relationship between Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] and healthy cognitive aging has not yet been sufficiently investigated. For the current analysis we used the cross-sectional data of 1,380 Berlin Aging Study II (BASE-II) participants aged 60 years and older (52.2% women, mean age 68 ± 4 years). We employed the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD)-Plus test battery to establish latent factors representing co

Temporary mechanical circulatory support for refractory heart failure: the German Heart Center Berlin experience.

BACKGROUND: Temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) offers a valuable option for treatment of refractory heart failure. We present our experience with selected MCS devices in cardiogenic shock of different etiologies. METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients who were treated in our institution between 01/2016 and 07/2018. Patients receiving only veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) support were excluded. Left ventricular support patients received Impella; right ventricular support was conducted using Levitronix CentriMag. RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients recei

MRI Brain Changes After Marathon Running: Results of the Berlin Beat of Running Study.

Several studies report neurological complications such as brain injury induced by ischemia or edema following exhaustive endurance sport. We aimed to detect the frequency of acute brain lesions after a marathon race. In the prospective observational Berlin Beat of Running study, 110 experienced endurance athletes underwent 3-Tesla brain MRI exams 2-3 days prior and within 2 days after a marathon run. MRI results were compared to an age- and sex-matched control group of 68 non-athletes, including the "Age-Related White Matter Changes" (ARWMC) scale to assess white matter lesions (WML) in the br

The Berlin Inventory of Gambling behavior - Screening (BIG-S): Validation using a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Published diagnostic questionnaires for gambling disorder in German are either based on DSM-III criteria or focus on aspects other than life time prevalence. This study was designed to assess the usability of the DSM-IV criteria based Berlin Inventory of Gambling Behavior Screening tool in a clinical sample and adapt it to DSM-5 criteria. METHODS: In a sample of 432 patients presenting for behavioral addiction assessment at the University Medical Center Mainz, we checked the screening tool's results against clinical diagnosis and compared a subsample of n=300 clinically diagnosed

Antithrombotic strategies in children receiving long-term Berlin Heart EXCOR ventricular assist device therapy.

BACKGROUND: Thromboembolic events while receiving ventricular assist device (VAD) support remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality despite standard anti-coagulation and anti-platelet therapies. The use of bivalirudin and epoprostenol infusions as an alternate anti-thrombotic (AT) regimen in pediatric VAD patients was reviewed. METHODS: This was a retrospective record review of 6 pediatric patients (aged ≤17 years) at 2 institutions treated with bivalirudin and epoprostenol infusions while being supported with the Berlin Heart EXCOR (Berlin Heart GmbH, Berlin, Germany) VAD. Management of pediatric patients after implantation of the Berlin Heart EXCOR ventricular assist device.

Within the last 16 years, the Berlin Heart EXCOR systems have been used for circulatory support in 73 infants and children up to 17 years of age (mean, 7 years) with severe circulatory failure resistant to pharmacological therapy at our institution. These were patients with cardiomyopathy, fulminant myocarditis, end-stage congenital cardiac defects, and acute heart failure after congenital heart surgery. Mean EXCOR support time was 36 days (range, 1 to 420 days). Forty-four patients (62%) survived up to transplantation or after weaning and 37 (51%) of them, including 9 infants, were discharged

Pulsatile mechanical cardiac assistance in pediatric patients with the Berlin heart ventricular assist device.

Mechanical cardiac assistance for neonates, infants, children and adolescents may be accomplished with pulsatile ventricular assist devices (VAD) instead of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or centrifugal pumps. The Berlin Heart VAD consists of extracorporeal, pneumatically driven blood pumps for pulsatile univentricular or biventricular assistance for patients of all age groups. The blood pumps are heparin-coated. The stationary driving unit (IKUS) has the required enhanced compressor performance for pediatric pump sizes. The Berlin Heart VAD was used in a total number of 424 patients from

Respiratory Distress Complicating Falciparum Malaria Imported to Berlin, Germany: Incidence, Burden, and Risk Factors.

While European healthcare systems face resource shortages as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, numbers of imported falciparum malaria cases increased again with re-intensifying international travel. The aim of the study was to identify malaria-specific complications associated with a prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (ICU-LOS) in the pre-COVID-19 era and to determine targets for their prevention. This retrospective observational investigation included all the cases treated from 2001 to 2015 at the Charité University Hospital, Berlin. The association of malaria-specifi

Application of Berlin questionnaire in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome through soft palate morphology types.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by intermittent complete and partial airway collapse, resulting in frequent episodes of apnea and hypopnea. The Berlin questionnaire (BQ) is a simple, inexpensive instrument used to screen for OSA, which is about risk factors for sleep apnea, namely, snoring behavior, daytime sleepiness or fatigue, and the presence of obesity or hypertension. This 10-question test has since then become well known for its accuracy in predicting the presence of sleep apnea in patients. Cephalometry is a relatively inexpensive method and

War Imprisonment and Clinical Narratives of Psychiatric Illness, Psychiatric Hospital Charité, Berlin, 1948-1956.

While the historical analysis of psychological trauma from warfare has been extensive, traumatic illness in East German psychiatric practice after the Second World War has drawn little attention. The dominant literature uses West German political and medical discourses as sources to investigate the relationship between traumatic experience and psychiatric illness. This paper instead draws from East German patient files from 1948 until 1956 to examine efforts at the Charité Hospital in Berlin to interpret the psychiatric illness of former prisoners of war (POWs). By examining Socialist Party di

Treatment of Nonagenarians With Atrial Fibrillation: Insights From the Berlin Atrial Fibrillation (BAF) Registry.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine course and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) in nonagenarians. Incidence of AF increases with age. Due to the demographic change in the industrialized world, an increase of AF in the group of elderly and very elderly is expected in the next decades. However, only few data exist on the clinical relevance of AF in patients aged 89 years or older. DESIGN: Observational, mono-centric registry. SETTING: University hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Of the 11,888 patients included in the Berlin Atrial Fibrillation (BAF) Registry, 279 patients aged

Augmented and standard Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster chemotherapy for treatment of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The augmented Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster (aBFM) regimen has demonstrated improved outcomes in children with acute lymphomblastic leukemia (ALL), but efficacy in adults is unknown. In this retrospective study, we evaluated clinical outcomes in 29 adult ALL patients (aged 19-70) treated with standard BFM (sBFM) or dose-intensive aBFM. Patients were stratified into risk groups based on age, cytogenetic abnormalities, peripheral leukocytosis and response to induction chemotherapy. Inter-mediate risk patients less than 50 years old and all high-risk patients were assigned to aBFM. Complete remission
