Novel pharmacologic treatment in acute binge eating disorder - role of lisdexamfetamine.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder and an important public health problem. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption accompanied by a sense of loss of control over the binge eating behavior without the inappropriate compensatory weight loss behaviors of bulimia nervosa. BED affects both sexes and all age groups and is associated with medical and psychiatric comorbidities. Until recently, self-help and psychotherapy were the primary treatment options for patients with BED. In early 2015, lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, a prodrug stimulant m

The relationship between binge eating disorder and non-purging bulimia nervosa.

Background  Mediastinal mass lesions span a wide histopathological and radiological spectrum. Partition of the mediastinum into specific compartments aids in differential diagnosis of mass lesions, assistance in biopsies, and other surgical procedures. Multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) is a promising three-dimensional imaging tool allowing substantial anatomical volumes to be routinely covered with isotropic submillimeter spatial resolution to precisely localize lesions and biopsy needles for both benign and malignant disease lesions of the mediastinum. Objective  The aim of this st

Abuse, bullying, and discrimination as risk factors for binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether sexual and physical abuse, bullying by peers, and ethnicity-based discrimination are associated with an increased risk for developing binge eating disorder in black women and in white women and whether any increase in risk is specific for the development of binge eating disorder. METHOD: A community sample of 162 women with binge eating disorder and 251 healthy and 107 psychiatric comparison subjects was interviewed for exposure to the risk factors under investigation. RESULTS: White subjects with binge eating disorder reported significantly higher rate

Accuracy of self-reported weight in patients with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of self-reported weight in patients with binge eating disorder. METHOD: Subjects were 108 adults who were consecutively evaluated for outpatient clinical trials and met DSM-IV criteria for binge eating disorder. Self-reported and measured weights were taken and participants were administered a battery of measures to examine correlates of reporting error. In addition, accurate reporters of weight (i.e., individuals who reported their weight within 5 lb of their measured weight) were compared to underreporters (i.e., individuals who un

Pharmacotherapy of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder: longer-term outcomes.

The longer-term effects of antidepressant medication, with and without the addition of psychotherapy, for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder are reviewed. The use of a single antidepressant agent results in recovery of about 25 percent of patients entering treatment; continued treatment is accompanied by relapse in about one-third of these patients. Substituting one or more antidepressants for the initial agent in patients who fail to improve or cannot tolerate side effects improves long-term maintenance. Adding cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may prevent relapse onc

Binge eating disorder: clinical features and treatment of a new diagnosis.

This review will describe the diagnostic criteria for the recently proposed diagnosis of binge eating disorder and provide an overview of its prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment approaches. Studies indicate that binge eaters represent a substantial proportion (18-46%) of the obese in weight control programs. Normal-weight patients with bulimia nervosa, obese binge eaters, and obese nonbinge eaters appear to represent three distinct populations, with obese nonbinge eaters showing the least psychological disturbance and patients with bulimia nervosa exhibiting the most. Binge eating disorder: reliability and validity of a new diagnostic category.

This study examined the reliability and validity of binge eating disorder (BED), which has been proposed for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ([DSM] 4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, in press). The interrater reliability of the BED diagnosis compared favorably with that of most diagnoses in the revised third edition of the DSM. To assess validity, we compared obese individuals with and without BED and bulimia nervosa patients. BED subjects differed from the non-BED obese group on variables related to dieting and weight histories but did not differ

Comorbidity of mood and substance use disorders in patients with binge-eating disorder: Associations with personality disorder and eating disorder pathology.

OBJECTIVE: Binge-eating disorder (BED) is associated with elevated rates of mood and substance use disorders, but the significance of such comorbidity is ambiguous. We compared personality disorder and eating disorder psychopathology in four subgroups of BED patients: those with mood disorders, those with substance use disorders, those with both, and those with neither. METHOD: Subjects were 347 patients who met DSM-IV research criteria for BED. Semistructured interviews evaluated lifetime DSM-IV axis I disorders, DSM-IV personality disorder features, and eating disorder psychopathology. RES

Comorbidity of binge eating disorder and other psychiatric disorders: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating disorder (BED), although relatively recently recognized as a distinct clinical syndrome, is the most common eating disorder. BED can occur as a separate phenomenon or in combination with other mental disorders, adding to the overall burden of the illness. Due to the relatively short history of recognizing BED as a distinct disorder, this review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the co-occurrence of BED with other psychiatric disorders. METHOD: This review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Multiple databases, such as MEDLINE, MEDLINE Complete, and Academic Sea

Reducing binge eating through behavioral-focused versus emotion-focused implementation intentions in patients with binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa: An experimental approach.

Binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are characterized by recurrent binge eating, episodes of consuming large amounts of food in a discrete period of time associated with a loss of control. Implementation intentions are explicit if-then plans that engender goal-directed action, and rely less on cognitive control than standard treatment options. In a sample with BED and BN, we compared two implementation intention conditions to a control condition. In the behavior-focused condition, implementation intentions targeted binge eating behaviors. In the emotion-focused condition, impl

Can early change in eating disorder psychopathology predict outcome in guided self-help for binge eating?

PURPOSE: This study tests the value of a measure of eating disorder (ED) psychopathology in predicting outcome following guided self-help in a non-underweight sample with regular binge eating. It examines whether early reductions in ED psychopathology are associated with remission status at post-treatment. METHODS: Seventy-two adults with bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or an atypical form of these illnesses received up to ten sessions of cognitive behaviour therapy-based guided self-help. Using a session-by-session measure of eating pathology and associated reliable change indices, r
