Invertebrate mercury bioaccumulation in permanent, seasonal, and flooded rice wetlands within California's Central Valley.

We examined methylmercury (MeHg) bioavailability in four of the most predominant wetland habitats in California's Central Valley agricultural region during the spring and summer: white rice, wild rice, permanent wetlands, and shallowly-flooded fallow fields. We sampled MeHg and total mercury (THg) concentrations in two aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa at the inlets, centers, and outlets of four replicated wetland habitats (8 wetlands total) during two time periods bounding the rice growing season and corresponding to flood-up and pre-harvest (96 total samples). In general, THg concentrations (me

Factors affecting enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park, USA.

We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. Using Hg-clean techniques, we collected water, zooplankton, macro invertebrates, and fishes in 1998 and 1999 from one advisory lake, Sargent Lake, for analysis of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg). For comparison, samples were also collected from a non-advisory lake, Lake Richie. Concentrations of Hg(T) in northern pike were significantly higher in Sargent Lake (P<0.01). Counter to expectations, mean co

Fish eye lens chronologies reveal reservoir-driven changes in carbon biogeochemistry and mercury bioaccumulation.

Reservoir impoundments alter river carbon (C) biogeochemistry as submerged terrestrial material is decomposed, which enhances mercury (Hg) methylation. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates in aquatic organisms and biomagnifies along food webs, exposing wildlife and human consumers. Reservoir characteristics (ie., water residence time and land flooded area) regulate C and Hg dynamics, yet their temporal dynamics remain poorly resolved. Fish eye lenses grow incrementally and preserve fine-scale temporal records of Hg bioaccumulation and C biogeochemistry. Lenses from the Roma

Contrasting Magnitude and Timing of Pulsed Aqueous Methylmercury Bioaccumulation across a Reservoir Food Web.

Water column hypoxia is a key process influencing methylmercury (MeHg) production and availability in waterbodies worldwide. During seasonal destratification, large, short-lived pulses of aqueous MeHg may be released into the subsequently mixed water column, but little is known about the fate of these pulses, particularly whether there are concomitant increases in MeHg uptake into aquatic food webs. We examined the magnitude and timing of MeHg uptake across several trophic guilds relative to the reservoir stratification status using biweekly mercury data from water, zooplankton, and fish (Blue

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in free-ranging South American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) in Southeastern Brazil.

Anthropogenic activities are the main sources of soil, air, and water pollution by metals, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), the metalloid arsenic (As), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). The goal of this study was to assess the presence and concentration of toxic (As, Cd, Pb, and Cr) and essential metals (Mg, Zn, and Cu) in the liver and kidneys from 96 free-ranging rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) from Minas Gerais (Brazil). Bioaccumulation of Cd and Pb were significantly higher in males and heavier rattlesnakes (those with body weight above the average of the study

Efficient bioaccumulation of tungsten by Escherichia coli cells expressing the Sulfitobacter dubius TupBCA system.

Tungsten (W) is a valuable element with considerable industrial and economic importance that belongs to the European Union list of critical metals with a high supply risk. Therefore, the development of effective and new methods for W recovery is essential to ensure a sustainable supply. In the present study, the Sulfitobacter dubius W transport system TupABC was explored in order to demonstrate both its functionality in Escherichia coli cells and to construct a bioaccumulator (EcotupW). The complete gene cluster tupBCA or partial gene cluster tupBC were cloned in an expression vector and trans

Light-enhanced bioaccumulation of molybdenum by nitrogen-deprived recombinant anoxygenic photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris.

As molybdenum (Mo) is an indispensable metal for plant nitrogen metabolisms, accumulation of dissolved Mo into bacterial cells may connect to the development of bacterial fertilizers that promote plant growth. In order to enhance Mo bioaccumulation, nitrogen removal and light illumination were examined in anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria (APB) because APB possess Mo nitrogenase whose synthesis is strictly regulated by ammonium ion concentration. In addition, an APB, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, transformed with a gene encoding Mo-responsive transcriptional regulator ModE was constructed. Mo c

Biochemistry, cytogenetics and bioaccumulation in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to different thorium concentrations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thorium (Th) bioaccumulation on the metabolism of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) through biochemical parameters of the muscle (glycogen, glucose, lactate, protein, and ammonia). In addition, lipidic peroxidation levels (TBARS), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the gills and in hepatic and muscular tissues were also analyzed. Cytogenetic parameters were studied through the evaluation of nuclear abnormalities in red blood cells. Silver catfish juveniles were exposed to different waterborne Th levels (in microg L(-1))

Bioaccumulation behaviour of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in a Canadian Arctic marine food web.

A comparative analysis of the bioaccumulation behaviour of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was conducted involving simultaneous measurements of PBDE and PCB concentrations in organisms of a Canadian Arctic marine food web. Concentrations of individual PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -153, -154 and -183) in Arctic marine sediments (0.001-0.5 ng.g(-1) dry wt) and biota (0.1-30 ng.g(-1) wet wt) were low compared to those concentrations in biota from urbanized/industrial regions. While recalcitrant PCB congeners exhibited a high degree of biomagnificat

An integrated approach using bioaccumulation and biomarker measurements in female shore crab, Carcinus maenas.

The shore crab Carcinus maenas, was used as a biomonitoring organism to measure the potential impact that the mining spill in the Guadalquivir Estuary (SW, Spain), in 1998 may have exerted on local biota. Female intermoult C. maenas were exposed to dissolved cadmium, copper and zinc at concentrations found in local waters following the spill (3 microgl-1 Cd, 15 microgl-1 Cu, 700 microgl-1 Zn). Groups of shore crabs were exposed for 21 days to these metals, both singularly and in combination. Residues of metals were measured in gill, midgut gland and muscle tissues, together with metallothionei

Review on the Bioaccumulation, Trophic Magnification, and Aquatic Toxicology of PFAS: Perspectives from Molecular Structure.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely detected in aquatic environments, and their bioaccumulation, trophic magnification, and ecotoxicity have raised increasing concern. However, critical knowledge gaps remain regarding how differences in their molecular structures influence these processes and the mechanisms underlying such effects. This review synthesizes the current knowledge of the physicochemical properties, bioaccumulation, trophic magnification, and toxicity of PFAS in aquatic environments, with particular emphasis on the effects of the carbon-chain length, functional-gr

Bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and exuvial elimination of polystyrene nanoplastics in a terrestrial predator-prey system.

Despite the ubiquitous spread of nanoplastics, their trophic transfer and biological impacts in terrestrial ecosystems remain poorly understood. Here, europium-labelled 100 nm polystyrene nanoparticles (Eu-PS-NPs) were used as a tracer to investigate their accumulation, trophic transfer, and sublethal effects along a terrestrial predator-prey interaction involving larvae of carabid beetle Carabus lefebvrei and the snail Cantareus aspersus. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry demonstrated significant accumulation in beetle larvae fed contaminated snails (0.01 and 0.1% w/w). Trophic tra

Diet shifts drive mercury bioaccumulation and distribution in tissues of the longnose lancetfish (Alepisaurus ferox).

Monitoring the impacts of global efforts to reduce mercury (Hg) emissions is limited by the collection of biological samples at appropriate spatiotemporal scales. This is especially true in the deep sea, a vast region with food webs that cycle bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg). Within a species, understanding the distribution of Hg across tissue types can reveal how Hg accumulates in the body and inform how useful a species is for biomonitoring geographic regions or vertical habitats of the ocean. We focus on a globally distributed deep-sea fish, the longnose lancetfish (Alepisaurus ferox,

Spatial and Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in a Sheep-Based Food System: Implications for Human Health.

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils presents serious environmental and health risks. This study assessed the bioaccumulation and spatial distribution of nickel, cadmium, zinc, lead, and copper within a sheep-based food chain in the Baia Mare region, Romania, which includes soil, green grass, sheep serum, and dairy products. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we analyzed the concentrations of these metals and calculated bioconcentration factors (BCFs) to evaluate their transfer through trophic levels. Spatial analysis revealed that copper (up to 2528.20 mg/

Bioaccumulation of organotin compounds in the marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the northern Adriatic Sea.

Organotin compounds (OTC), tri-, di- and monobutyl tin, were determined in the tissues of marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the Adriatic Sea. Marbled electric ray specimens were provided by local fishermen from three localities in the northern Adriatic: area close to the shipyard in Seča, the natural protected area Strunjan Nature Reserve and along the west Istrian coast. To assess the concentration of OTC in the environment, sediment samples were also analysed. After an adequate extraction of OTC from both matrices, their concentrations were determined by GC-ICP-MS. The results indi

Low-dose and repeated exposure to nickel leads to bioaccumulation and cellular and metabolic alterations in quails.

Nickel (Ni) is a widespread environmental pollutant commonly released into effluent due to industrial activities, the use of fuels, or wastewater disposal. Many studies confirm the toxic effects of this heavy metal. However, there is a lack of knowledge and data on bioaccumulation patterns in tissues as well as cellular and molecular responses following the exposure of living organisms to Ni. In this study, Japanese quails were exposed to low (10 μg/L) and high (2000 μg/L) Ni concentrations in the form of nickel(II) chloride via drinking water. Sub-chronic exposure lasted 30 days while nominal

Investigating the dynamics of methylmercury bioaccumulation in the Beaufort Sea shelf food web: a modeling perspective.

High levels of methylmercury (MeHg) have been reported in Arctic marine biota, posing health risks to wildlife and human beings. Although MeHg concentrations of some Arctic species have been monitored for decades, the key environmental and ecological factors driving temporal trends of MeHg are largely unclear. We develop an ecosystem-based MeHg bioaccumulation model for the Beaufort Sea shelf (BSS) using the Ecotracer module of Ecopath with Ecosim, and apply the model to explore how MeHg toxicokinetics and food web trophodynamics affect bioaccumulation in the BSS food web. We show that a food

The effectiveness of soil amendments, biochar and lime, in mitigating cadmium bioaccumulation in Theobroma cacao L.

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is an important neotropical tree crop grown for its seeds or beans used in global chocolate and confectionary industries. Following studies showing ill effects of long-term dietary exposure of cadmium (Cd) on human health, a number of countries including the European Union (EU) have developed stringent regulations to protect consumers from exposure to cadmium. Cocoa is capable of bioaccumulating Cd in the cocoa beans when grown in soils high in cadmium and hence livelihood of cocoa farmers can be at risk if methods to mitigate the bioaccumulation of Cd are not develo
