Characteristics of natural corn starch/waste paper fiber composite foams treated by organic-inorganic hybrid hydrophobic coating technology.

With the growing global awareness of environmental protection, the demand for biodegradable materials to replace traditional plastic foam has become increasingly urgent. Starch-based foam, with its abundant availability, low cost, and biodegradability, has shown great potential as an alternative to plastic foam. However, its inherent high hydrophilicity and relatively low mechanical performance limit its widespread application. The aim of this study is to modify corn starch (NCS) and waste paper fiber (WPF) using citric acid (CA) and stearic acid (SA), and to develop an efficient hydrophobic c

Microplastics and antimicrobial resistance: A growing threat to aquatic health, food safety, and the one health framework.

Microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles <5 mm, are emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems with serious implications for aquaculture. Originating from degraded plastics, MPs enter aquaculture systems via feed, equipment, water, and runoff. Once present, they cause physiological harm to aquatic organisms, triggering oxidative stress, inflammation, and intestinal damage. MPs also serve as substrates for biofilm formation, enabling the persistence of pathogens and facilitating horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This accelerates antimicrobial resist

Engineering Precursor and NADPH Supply to Enhance 1,4-Butanediol Production in Plasmid-Free Escherichia coli.

1,4-Butanediol (1,4-BDO) is an important non-natural platform chemical for biodegradable plastics, yet its microbial production is constrained by inadequate NADPH availability. In this study, five heterologous enzymes were introduced into Escherichia coli for the biosynthesis of 1,4-BDO. Through coordinated regulation of pathway enzyme expression and enhancement of key rate-limiting steps, a 1,4-BDO titer of 0.93 g/L was achieved from glucose. Precursor engineering to increase succinyl-CoA availability and pathway intermediate accumulation further improved the titer to 1.87 g/L. Strengthening

Interfacial engineering of poly (lactic acid) composite films using esterified cellulose nanocrystals/curcumin hybrid nanofiller for improved mechanical and antibacterial performance.

Polylactic acid (PLA), as a biodegradable material, is considered an ideal alternative to petroleum-based plastics. The intrinsic mechanical fragility and lack of multifunctional characteristics significantly constrain its practical utilization in advanced applications. This study designed and prepared a ternary PLA composite material with uniform surface and enhanced functionality by uniformly dispersing esterified CNC (EnCNC) Curcumin (Cur) hybrid nanostructures in the polymer matrix. The synergistic interaction between the EnCNC and Cur significantly enhanced their interfacial compatibility

Production of 1,4-Butanediol from Succinic Acid Using Escherichia Coli Whole-Cell Catalysis.

The widespread attention towards 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a key chemical raw material stems from its potential in producing biodegradable plastics. However, the efficiency of its biosynthesis via current bioprocesses is limited. In this study, a dual-pathway approach for 1,4-BDO production from succinic acid was developed. Specifically, a double-enzyme catalytic pathway involving carboxylic acid reductase and ethanol dehydrogenase was proposed. Optimization of the expression levels of the pathway enzymes led to a significant 318 % increase in 1,4-BDO titer. Additionally, the rate-limiting enzym

Unlocking the potential of Cupriavidus necator H16 as a platform for bioproducts production from carbon dioxide.

The rapid global increase in fossil fuel and energy consumption has resulted in the accumulation of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), thus contributing to climate change. Therefore, transforming CO2 into valuable products could yield beneficial outcomes. In this review, the capabilities of Cupriavidus necator H16, a light-independent chemoautotrophic bacterium, as a host platform for the transformation of CO2 into diverse products are explored. We begin by examining the progress in synthetic biology toolkits, gas fermentation technologies, and engineering approaches, consideri

Microplastics and nano-plastics as emerging gut-brain axis disruptors: mechanistic insights, health implications, and future direction.

Plastics are synthetic polymers widely used for their versatility, longer shelf life, and low cost. However, the non-biodegradable nature of conventional plastics has led to accumulation of microplastics (MPs; <5mm) and nanoplastics (NPs; <100 nm) in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments. MNPs are composed of polyethene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethene terephthalate. Human exposure to micro and nanoplastics occurs mainly through ingestion, inhalation, and rarely through dermal contact. The gastrointestinal tract is the potential accumulation site for

Preparation and Characterization of Immediate-Release Tablets Containing Calcium Lactate Recovered from Chemically Recycled Poly(lactic acid) 3D Printing Filaments.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is one type of biodegradable plastic that can replace single-use plastic. Nevertheless, it still poses the problem of accumulation in the environment due to the slow biodegradation rate. Developing simple yet effective methods for PLA recycling and upcycling can pave the way for a circular economy and help partially solve the plastic pollution problem. In the present work, PLA filaments of different colors were chemically recycled in alkaline solutions of C1-C3 primary alcohols under mild experimental conditions (75 °C for 30 min, 1 atm). The effect of various process par

Detection and specific chemical identification of submillimeter plastic fragments in complex matrices such as compost.

Research on the plastic contamination of organic fertilizer (compost) has largely concentrated on particles and fragments > 1 mm. Small, submillimeter microplastic particles may be more hazardous to the environment. However, research on their presence in composts has been impeded by the difficulty to univocally identify small plastic particles in such complex matrices. Here a method is proposed for the analysis of particles between 0.01 and 1.0 mm according to number, size, and polymer type in compost. As a first demonstration of its potential, the method is used to determine large and small m

Knowledge, attitudes and practice of consumers towards single-use plastics at Korle-Gonno, Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic pollution, particularly from single-use plastics (SUPs), is an increasing environmental problem, especially for coastal communities dependent on marine ecosystems for their livelihood, food, and recreation. The Korle-Gonno community in Ghana epitomizes this: inadequate waste management systems and heavy reliance on SUPs. This study aimed to explore the drivers of consumer attitudes toward SUPs to inform effective interventions. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 198 residents of Korle-Gonno. The study used a multi-stage sampling method to se

A comprehensive review on microbial degradation of polyethylene plastics: ecotoxicity, deterioration process, recurrent intermediates and key enzymes involved.

Plastic contamination is a universal threat that affects the flora and fauna in the environment. This review focuses on biodegradation of polyethylene (PE). PE is a widely used plastic in food packaging, agricultural materials (mulch films) and disposable single-use plastic bags owing to its durability and cost-effectiveness. Being a hydrophobic, recalcitrant and persistent polymer, PE contaminates air, soil and water. The ecotoxicity, sources, fate and transport of PE and detection techniques like micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) are discussed. Considering the enviro

Broad-spectrum biodegradation of aliphatic and aliphatic-aromatic polyesters by Papiliotrema laurentii isolated from locust frass.

Biodegradable aliphatic and aliphatic-aromatic polyesters, such as poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), are increasingly used as sustainable alternatives to petrochemical plastics. However, their depolymerization outside industrial composting facilities is often incomplete. This study characterized Papiliotrema laurentii strain 62UF-13, isolated from migratory locust frass, for broad-spectrum polyester hydrolysis. Emulsion assays demonstrated hydrolytic activity across all f

Polylactic acid microplastics regulate organophosphorus pesticide impacts on phosphorus bioavailability in soil-plant systems.

Organophosphorus pesticides are known to potentially disrupt soil phosphorus (P) cycling. Microplastics often co-occur with organophosphorus pesticides in agricultural soils, with largely unknown combined effects. This work examined chlorpyrifos (CPF, 6 and 12 mg kg-1) fate in soils with and without co-occurring biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs, 1%), and their combined impacts on plant growth, P distribution, P fractions and P-related enzyme activities in maize-cultivated soils. Results showed that CPF alone enhanced the transformation of NaHCO3-Po (-54%) to NaHCO3-Pi (53%)

Co-conversion of CO2 and refractory organics into bioplastics through a stable biocarrier.

An attractive solution to traditional plastics is scaling up the microbial system to produce bioplastics like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Herein, we developed a dynamic microbial ecosystem on porous biocarrier for conversion of refractory organics to bioplastics. biocarriers of 25 mm sized were packed in a 5 L bioreactor and operated for 200 days, to achieve stable performance for commercial applications. Reaching to bioreactor stability, microbial ecosystem utilized quinoline (5.2 kg/m3/day) for carbon & nitrogen metabolism, phenol (4.5 kg/m3/day) to trigger synthesis of PHAs, pyridines (4.

Pickering Emulsion Biocatalysis with Engineered Living Cells for Degrading Polycarbonate Plastics.

The efficient degradation of plastics remains a pressing environmental challenge due to their inherent resistance to breakdown. While biocatalysis offers a promising approach for sustainable and effective plastic degradation, the inherently low solubility of plastics in aqueous systems severely limits the efficiency of enzymatic reactions. To address this issue, we developed a biocompatible polymer coating strategy to engineer living cell surfaces, enabling the stabilization of Pickering emulsions for over 192 h and significantly enhancing plastic accessibility to biocatalysts. Leveraging this
