Effect of heterotrophic anodic denitrification on anolyte pH control and bioelectricity generation enhancement of bufferless microbial fuel cells.

Heterotrophic anodic denitrification (HAD) in the single-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising nitrogen removal technology. In this paper, the benefit (anolyte pH increase) and challenge (substrate consumption) brought by the heterotrophic anodic denitrification process for the electricity generation of bufferless MFCs were studied for the first time. Substrate anaerobic hydrolysis dramatically decreased the anolyte pH to 5.1, which seriously restricted the electric power output of the Control. The anolyte pH of the heterotrophic anodic denitrification MFCs (HADMFCs) with 60 mg/L (H

The enhancement of iron fuel cell on bio-cathode denitrification and its mechanism as well as the microbial community analysis of bio-cathode.

To address the issue of insufficient electrons during denitrification, an iron fuel cell (IFC) bioreactor using iron as abiotic anode was designed. The nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of IFC (2.54 ± 0.016%) was significantly lower than microbial fuel cell (MFC) (32.58 ± 0.033%) with same bio-cathode under autotrophic conditions, which was due to the permeation of acetate on proton exchange membrane (PEM) affected the process of enriching autotrophic denitrifying bacteria by MFC. When used in heterotrophic conditions, the NRE of the closed-circuits of IFC was 29.04%, 10.53%, 8.33% higher than

A rapid and simple protocol to prepare a living biocomposite that mimics electroactive biofilms.

A living material was formed by self-assembly of bacterial cells (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 or Pseudomonas fluorescens) with carbon nanotubes in the presence of cytochrome c from a bovine heart with the goal to mimic electroactive biofilms. The role of cytochrome c on self-assembly, cell viability and extracellular electron transfer was studied. Scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering experiments highlighted its role on the self-assembly of bacteria‑carbon nanotube aggregates within only 2h in solution. The deposition of these aggregates on glassy carbon surfaces led to a ho

Bacteriorhodopsin-based photo-electrochemical cell.

A simple solution-based electrochemical cell has been constructed and successfully employed in the detection of the photoelectric response upon photoexcitation of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) without external bias. Commercially-available indium tin oxide (ITO) glasses served as the optical windows and electrodes. Small amounts of bR suspensions (∼100 μL) were utilized as the photovoltaic medium to generate the proton gradient between two half-cells separated by a molecular porous membrane. Continuous broadband visible light (λ>380 nm) and a short-pulse 532-nm laser were employed for the photoexcitat

Living electronics: Coupling S. oneidensis MtrC-SpyTag cells to SpyCatcher-functionalized electrodes for direct electron transfer.

This work set out to establish an easily applicable system to improve a broad range of bioelectronic devices using the SpyTag-SpyCatcher crosslinking system together with one of the model organisms for extracellular electron transport, Shewanella oneidensis. Therefore, the surface-displayed c-type cytochrome MtrC was equipped with an accessible SpyTag and coupled to SpyCatcher-functionalized surfaces. A transposon screen followed by nanopore sequencing was conducted in order to identify integration positions which facilitate MtrC functionality while the SpyTag is surface accessible. Three inte

Electroactive bimetallic CoNi and CNT modified carbon felt cathode promotes microbial CO2 electroreduction.

Efficiently reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) to high-value organic chemicals in microbial electrosynthesis (MES) systems hinges on the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. This study increased the efficiency of CO2 reduction to acetic and formic acids by creating a carbon felt (CF) cathode co-modified with nickel‑cobalt bimetallic oxide (NiCo2O4) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) coupled with an enriched mixed microbial community derived from anaerobic sludge. Compared to NiCo2O4/CF and CF cathodes, the CNT-NiCo2O4/CF cathode increased acetate yield by 1.3- and 2.3-fold, and formate yield

Treatment of waste activated sludge and the enhancement mechanism for electron transfer in an osmotic microbial fuel cell.

The osmotic microbial fuel cell (OsMFC) is a novel technology that can achieve electricity generation and water recovery while stabilizing and dewatering waste activated sludge (WAS). By examining electricity generation, WAS stabilization, microbial community shifts, meta-transcriptomic changes, and the enhancement mechanism of electron transfer, this study demonstrated significant advantages of an OsMFC in treating WAS over a conventional microbial fuel cell (MFC). Compared with typical MFCs, the OsMFC performed better in terms of maximum power density (260 mW·m⁻2), removal of total chemical

Microbial-photoelectrochemical cell for the conversion of raw cellulose materials into electrical power and chemicals.

Exploiting biomass as a fuel source has attracted increasing attention over the last few decades. Combined biotic-abiotic systems can enhance conversion efficiency, but biotic reactions often require oxygen-free conditions, which are hindered by oxygen evolution at the photoanode. Herein, we develop a modular microbial-photoelectrochemical cell (MPEC) that facilitates the one-pot degradation and light-induced conversion of cellulosic material into electrical power and added-value compounds. A BiVO4 photoanode functionalized with cobalt phosphate (BiVO4/CoP) was engineered to suppress undesired

Bioinspired FeCo Dual-Metal Phthalocyanine/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Anode for Enhanced Extracellular Electron Transfer in Microbial Fuel Cells.

The low efficiency of extracellular electron transfer (EET) at the bioanode-electrolyte interface remains a critical bottleneck limiting power output and startup kinetics in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). To address this, we developed a biomimetic FeCo bimetallic phthalocyanine/reduced graphene oxide composite anode (FeCo-rGO@CC) inspired by the heme cofactors in cytochrome c. Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) provide atomically dispersed M-N-C active sites analogous to enzymatic centers, synergistically enhancing EET kinetics. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) serves as a h

Iron/iron carbide coupled with S, N co-doped porous carbon as effective oxygen reduction reaction catalyst for microbial fuel cells.

As a novel energy device, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have attracted much attention for their dual functions of electricity generation and sewage treatment. However, the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetic on the cathode have hindered the practical application of MFCs. In this work, metallic organic framework derived carbon framework co-doped by Fe, S, N tri-elements was used as alternative electrocatalyst to the conventional Pt/C cathode catalyst in pH-universal electrolytes. The amount of thiosemicarbazide from 0.3 to 3 g determined the surface chemical property, and therefore t

Online self-powered Cr(VI) monitoring with autochthonous Pseudomonas and a bio-inspired redox polymer.

The assessment of water quality is critical to implement preventive and emergency interventions aimed to limit/avoid environmental contamination and human exposure to toxic compounds. While established high-resolution techniques allow quantitative and qualitative determination of contaminants, their widespread application is not feasible due to cost, time, and need for trained personnel. In this context, the development of easy-to-implement approaches for preliminary detection of contaminants is of the utmost importance. Herein, a portable self-powered microbial electrochemical sensor enabling

Kinetic competition between microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration in a bioelectrochemical system.

The Nernst-Monod model is used to describe bio-anode performance with respect to the effect of the electron donor and anode potential. However, electron competition is not considered in the model, limiting its application in wastewater treatment systems. In this work, nitrate was employed to describe the influence of a competitive electron acceptor on bio-anode performance. A new dynamic model of microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration was developed for the removal of nitrogen oxides. The competitive relationship between microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration was inves

Recent advances in nutrient removal and recovery in biological and bioelectrochemical systems.

Nitrogen and phosphorous are key pollutants in wastewater to be removed and recovered for sustainable development. Traditionally, nitrogen removal is practiced through energy intensive biological nitrification and denitrification entailing a major cost in wastewater treatment. Recent innovations in nitrogen removal aim at reducing energy requirements and recovering ammonium nitrogen. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are promising for recovering ammonium nitrogen from nitrogen rich waste streams (urine, digester liquor, swine liquor, and landfill leachate) profitably. Phosphorus is removed from

Biological toxicities of emissions from an unmodified engine fueled with diesel and biodiesel blend.

Conventional diesel and palm oil methyl esters were blended in 6 ratios (0, 10, 30, 50, 75 and 100% of biodiesel by volume) and fed into an unmodified 4-stroke engine with a constant output power. The semi-volatile and particulate products in the exhaust were collected separately and their biological toxicities evaluated by both Microtox test and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The Microtox test indicates that the TUVs (toxicity unit per liter exhaust sampled, TU/L-exhaust) in the semi-volatile extracts were 3 to 5 times those of the particulate ex

Fuel Production from Seawater and Fuel Cells Using Seawater.

Seawater is the most abundant resource on our planet and fuel production from seawater has the notable advantage that it would not compete with growing demands for pure water. This Review focuses on the production of fuels from seawater and their direct use in fuel cells. Electrolysis of seawater under appropriate conditions affords hydrogen and dioxygen with 100 % faradaic efficiency without oxidation of chloride. Photoelectrocatalytic production of hydrogen from seawater provides a promising way to produce hydrogen with low cost and high efficiency. Microbial solar cells (MSCs) that use biof

Efficient solar-to-fuels production from a hybrid microbial-water-splitting catalyst system.

Photovoltaic cells have considerable potential to satisfy future renewable-energy needs, but efficient and scalable methods of storing the intermittent electricity they produce are required for the large-scale implementation of solar energy. Current solar-to-fuels storage cycles based on water splitting produce hydrogen and oxygen, which are attractive fuels in principle but confront practical limitations from the current energy infrastructure that is based on liquid fuels. In this work, we report the development of a scalable, integrated bioelectrochemical system in which the bacterium Ralsto

Bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass: biochemical and molecular perspectives.

In view of rising prices of crude oil due to increasing fuel demands, the need for alternative sources of bioenergy is expected to increase sharply in the coming years. Among potential alternative bioenergy resources, lignocellulosics have been identified as the prime source of biofuels and other value-added products. Lignocelluloses as agricultural, industrial and forest residuals account for the majority of the total biomass present in the world. To initiate the production of industrially important products from cellulosic biomass, bioconversion of the cellulosic components into fermentable

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling reprograms extracellular electron transfer of Shewanella oneidensis.

Limited extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency constrains the electrocatalytic performance of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Although the c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) network is essential for EET, its regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study systematically compared the effects of overexpressing c-Cyts components versus cAMP receptor protein (CRP) modulation on EET efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Overexpression of individual c-Cyts failed to enhance EET. In contrast, coexpression of CymA, CctA, and MtrCBA (strain CC-Mtr) increased the maximum power densit
