Biological control and invading freshwater snails. A case study.

Introductions of four species of freshwater snails occurred between 1972 and 1996 onto Guadeloupe Island. Two of them, Melanoides tuberculata and Marisa cornuarietis, were subsequently used as biological control agents against Biomphalaria glabrata, the snail intermediate host of intestinal schistosomiasis. In 1996, a general survey was carried out in 134 sites which had already been investigated in 1972. The total number of mollusc species had increased from 19 to 21. Site numbers housing B. glabrata and two other species had strongly declined. This decline may be mainly attributed to a compe

Evaluation of several strategies for controlling canker plant disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae.

Pseudomonas syringae is a gram-negative bacterium that causes a diversity of diseases in numerous plants. Strategies to inhibit P. syringae growth include protective procedures; however, controlling the disease is complicated due to its rapid spread. Several antimicrobial agents can prevent this disease, such as chemical compounds, biological agents, secondary metabolites, nanoparticles, bacteriophages, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The most effective way to control the disease is through chemical control. Using copper compounds and antibiotics is a conventional practice to decrease canke

Plant Beneficial Features and Application of Paraburkholderia sp. NhPBG1 Isolated from Pitcher of Nepenthes hamblack.

Pitchers are the unique structures of carnivorous plants used for the trapping of insects and other small invertebrates. The digestion of captured prey here is assisted by the bacteria, which have been associated with pitchers. These bacterial communities can therefore expect to have a variety of plant beneficial functions. In this study, the bacterial isolate NhPBG1 from the pitcher of Nepenthes hamblack was screened for activity against Pythium aphanidermatum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Colletotrichum accutatum and was found to have the inhibitory activity towards all the te

Progress in Biological Therapies for Adult-Onset Still's Disease.

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare multifactorial autoinflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by an excessive release of cytokines triggered by dysregulated inflammation and articular and systemic manifestations. The clinical spectrum of AOSD ranges from self-limiting forms with mild symptoms to life-threatening cases and presents clinical and biological similarities with the juvenile form (sJIA). Nowadays, the advances in biologic agents no longer limit the treatment to NSAIDs, glucocorticoids, or conventional synthetic DMARDs. The blockade of IL-1 and IL-6 is effec

Abatacept as a successful therapy for myositis—a case-based review.

Only limited evidence exists on the therapeutic potential of biologic agents in the treatment of myositis. We present a brief review of the literature on off-label experiences of biologic agents in myositis, with a special interest in abatacept. Rituximab has been indicated to be beneficial and well tolerated in one large randomized controlled trial and many smaller studies. Initial data on tumour necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors are conflicting. There are only a few case reports and mechanistic studies on the treatment of myositis with other biologics, including alemtuzumab, anakinra, tociliz

Risk of Candida Infection and Serious Infections in Patients with Moderate-to-Severe Psoriasis Receiving Biologics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Biological agents used to treat moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis have been associated with Candida infection and other serious infections. It is, however, necessary to verify whether biologic agents increase the risk of Candida infection and serious infections and whether these risks vary among biologics. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their inception to December 2021. Results from individual RCT were pooled using Peto's method with a fixed-effects model, and I 2 was calculated to assess the hete

Untangling parasitoid competition: A three-dimensional framework for parasitoid interactions in biological control.

Parasitoid wasps are major biological-control agents, but their contribution to pest suppression is shaped by more than host attack. In agroecosystems, released and resident parasitoids interact with conspecifics, heterospecific parasitoids, predators, hyperparasitoids, alternative hosts, non-target species, and habitat resources. This review synthesizes parasitoid competition from a biological-control perspective and proposes a three-dimensional framework that classifies competitive interactions by competitor level, ecological arena, and interaction mode. The framework integrates intraspecifi

Systemic Treatment of Psoriasis: Current Evidence on Efficacy and Safety.

Systemic treatments for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis have been advanced from broad immunosuppressants up to agents more selectively targeting cytokines, cytokine receptors, or intracellular signaling. The current systemic treatments mainly consist of conventional systemic agents, biologics targeting tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-12/23p40, IL-17, or IL-23p19, and targeted oral agents. This review summarizes current evidence on efficacy, long-term disease control, safety, head-to-head comparisons, and practical selection of systemic treatments for adults with moderate-to

Use of biologic agents in pediatric psoriasis.

Psoriasis affects approximately 2 percent of the population. Approximately 30-45 percent of those affected first experience symptoms during childhood or adolescence. Although biologics have proven to be a relatively safe and effective treatment option for adults with psoriasis, limited information is available regarding the use of biologic agents in pediatric patients with psoriasis. The authors attempt to assess and summarize the available data on the use of biologic agents in patients under the age of 18, regardless of the indication, as well as to examine the limited available data on the u
