Smoothing and differentiation of displacement-time data: an application of splines and digital filtering.

The advent of the digital computer has allowed workers in the field of biomechanics to perform data smoothing and time differentiation numerically. The methods which are most commonly used are spline functions and digital filtering. This paper provides raw displacement-time data for an object falling in the earth's gravitational field and demonstrates the results obtained using splines and digital filtering to calculate acceleration. It is recommended that the quintic spline is a good method to use provided one has sufficient core available, and the digital filter, with some form of augmentati

Fractography of human intact long bone by bending.

Human intact tibiae were tested using the static bending method to learn about the relationship between the fracture surface and the failure mode. The bending test was applied to test pieces and to whole bones. The fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The bone fracture is closely related to the architecture of the bone substance, especially to the direction of the Haversian canals and the lamellae. The failure mode and the sequence of the break line of the bone can be found out by the observation on the fracture surface. Hardly any crushing effects caused by the compr

Revisiting the Mechanical Work-Energy Framework in Dynamic Biomechanical Systems.

The classical definition of mechanical work, W = F × D, assumes that work depends solely on force magnitude and displacement, independent of loading rate. However, biological tissues exhibit inherent rate sensitivity-muscles demonstrate velocity-dependent force generation governed by Hill's force-velocity relationship, while connective tissues and joints show load-rate-dependent stiffness and injury thresholds. These rate effects profoundly influence mechanical work, energy dissipation, and functional outcomes. In this work, we revisit the work-energy framework within biomechanics and biomater

Advancing mechanobiology from single molecules to complex cellular systems.

Cells operate as networks of proteins, membranes, condensates and compartments, each sensing and displaying distinct intracellular mechanical properties. However, cells also sense, adapt and respond to manifold mechanical properties of the environment, including adhesion, tension, stiffness, shear, viscoelasticity, plasticity, pressure and confinement. By gauging these properties at various timescales and across nano to macro length scales, cellular systems alter their collective responses. The field of mechanobiology aims to elucidate how cellular systems such as tissues, organoids or organs

PRIFED 2026 Preferred items checklist to report finite element studies in dentistry.

Finite Element (FE) analysis is widely used in dental biomechanics, but studies often suffer from insufficient reporting and lack of standardization. This study aimed to develop a consensus-based checklist PRIFED 2026 for improving the transparency, reproducibility, and clinical relevance of FE studies in dentistry. A Delphi process involving 22 international experts was conducted in two stages. Participants, experts in dental FE analysis, reviewed preliminary items derived from existing guidelines and literature. Through three online surveys, panellists rated 86 sub-items on a 9-point Likert

Mechanosensitive Polymer Matrices of Biologically-Relevant Compliance Based on Upconverting Nanoparticles.

Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising optical biomechanical force sensors due to their near-infrared excitation, low toxicity, photostability, and linear colorimetric sensitivity to micronewtons of force. Recently, a composite force sensor based on UCNPs embedded in a polystyrene microbead enabled the first real-time measurement of feeding forces in living nematodes. However, the comparatively large stiffness of polystyrene only makes it relevant to biomedical applications in a small subset of biological tissue. To facilitate deployment of UCNPs into biological tissues with a range

Mechanistic Model to Predict Forces in Bone End Milling: An Experimental Study Intended for Bone Grafting Surgery.

In orthopedic surgery, subtractive manufacturing processes, such as drilling, sawing, grinding, and milling, are employed for implant placement, fracture fixation, and reconstruction surgery. If the forces resulting from the bone cutting processes are uncontrolled, mechanical damage (e.g., microcracks and bone fragmentations) is observed in the local host bone. In this study, the use of the end milling process for harvesting bone grafts was investigated. Importantly, the mechanistic model for the prediction of bone end milling forces was developed, considering the axial, tangential, and radial

Effect of extramedullary fixation under different biomechanical modes on osseointegration of short-stem intramedullary implants: an experimental study.

The reconstruction of extreme long bone defects after malignant tumor resection remains challenging. Short-stem intramedullary implants offer a solution but are often limited by mechanical instability from suboptimal extramedullary fixation. This study assessed how extramedullary low elastic modulus versus high elastic modulus fixation affects osseointegration of these implants by using animal experiments, providing evidence to refine reconstruction techniques. Twenty four rabbits were randomized into LF (low elastic modulus fixation) and HF (high elastic modulus fixation) groups. All received

Analysis of Transient Cutting Forces in Cortical Bone During Ultrasonically Assisted Cutting.

Ultrasonically assisted cutting (UAC), a process characterized by high-performance material removal and enhanced surface finish, is widely employed in orthopedic surgery. However, variability in the mechanical properties of cortical bone may lead to unstable fractures and fluctuating cutting force during material removal, particularly under high-frequency vibration cutting. This study introduces a transient shear strength model that utilizes strain rate fluctuations to estimate cutting forces in the UAC process. The impact of varying osteon orientations and strain rate ranges on the yield stre

Peridynamic study of the strength and failure of cemented cellular materials.

In this paper, a bond-based peridynamic approach is used to simulate the rupture of cellular materials, such as plant tissues, considered as aggregates of cells bound together by a cohesive matrix. The main objective is to clarify how mechanical properties and fracture are affected by the toughness ratio between cell walls and matrix. Cell microstructures are generated using an approach combining the discrete element method to define a spatial distribution of sites (particle centers) and a Voronoi-Laguerre tessellation built on these sites to generate the cell topology. A parametric study is t

Interaction force modeling and analysis of the human-machine kinematic chain based on the human-machine deviation.

A mechanical model for a human-machine interaction force based on the man-machine kinematic chain is established. This is combined with screw theory and a virtual rigid body model for the human-machine interaction force is proposed. This model interprets the basic principle model of the human-machine contact force. The deviation of the human-machine kinematic chain is calculated using the virtual model. In order to carry out the calibration simulation for the model, a 6-sps parallel mechanism is taken as an example to illustrate the construction principle of the human-machine interaction virtu

Development and initial validation of a novel thread design for nonlocking cancellous screws.

High failure rates have been associated with nonlocking cancellous screws with a typical buttress thread in patients with osteoporotic bone. This study aimed to develop a novel thread design and compare its fixation stability with that of a typical buttress thread. Nonlocking cancellous screws with a novel thread design (proximal flank angle of 120 degrees, a flat crest feature, a tip-facing undercut feature) and nonlocking cancellous screws with a typical buttress thread were manufactured using stainless steel. Fixation stabilities were evaluated individually by the axial pullout and lateral

Biomechanical Analysis of Head Subjected to Blast Waves and the Role of Combat Protective Headgear Under Blast Loading: A Review.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a rising health concern of soldiers deployed in modern-day military conflicts. For bTBI, blast wave loading is a cause, and damage incurred to brain tissue is the effect. There are several proposed mechanisms for the bTBI, such as direct cranial entry, skull flexure, thoracic compression, blast-induced acceleration, and cavitation that are not mutually exclusive. So the cause-effect relationship is not straightforward. The efficiency of protective headgears against blast waves is relatively unknown as compared with other threats. Proper knowledge

Variations in non-locking screw insertion conditions generate unpredictable changes to achieved fixation tightness and stripping rates.

BACKGROUND: Screws are the most commonly inserted orthopaedic implants. However, several variables related to screw insertion and tightening have not been evaluated. This study aimed firstly to assess the effect of insertion variables on screw tightness, secondly to improve methodologies used by researchers when testing screw insertion techniques and thirdly to assess for any learning or fatigue effects when inserting screws. METHODS: Two surgeons tightened a total of 2280 non-locking, 3.5 mm cortical screws, with 120 screws inserted to what they felt to be optimum tightness whilst varying ea
