Comprehensive Insights into Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in Dairy Cattle: Transmission Dynamics, Milk-Borne Risks, Public Health Implications, Biosecurity Recommendations, and One Health Strategies for Outbreak Control.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been traditionally linked to poultry and wild birds, which has recently become a serious concern for dairy cattle, causing outbreaks all over the United States. The need for improved surveillance, biosecurity protocols, and interagency collaboration is highlighted by the discovery of H5N1 in dairy herds in several states and its human transmission. The epidemiology, transmission dynamics, and wide-ranging effects of H5N1 in cattle are reviewed in this paper, with particular attention paid to the disease's effects on agricultural systems, public

Outbreak of duck plague (duck herpesvirus enteritis) in numerous species of captive ducks and geese in temporal conjunction with enforced biosecurity (in-house keeping) due to the threat of avian influenza A virus of the subtype Asia H5N1.

The continuing westward spread of avian influenza A virus of the subtype H5N1 in free-living and domestic birds forced the European Union and the German federal government to enhance all biosecurity measures including in-house keeping of all captive birds from October 20 to December 15, 2005. Movement of captive ducks and geese of many different species from a free-range system to tight enclosures and maintenance for prolonged times in such overcrowded sheds resulted in pronounced disturbance of natural behaviour, interruption of mating and breeding activities and possibly additional stress. 'Implementation of bio…what?' Farm workers' subjectivities in Spanish dairy cattle farms through an ethnographic approach.

This study explores the implementation of biosecurity measures by farm workers through daily work routines on dairy cattle farms in Spain. The implementation of biosecurity measures on dairy cattle farms is mainly decided by farmers and veterinarians, but it is carried out by both farmers and farm workers. However, farm workers may be affected by socio-employment factors such as the precariousness of their work such that implementation of biosecurity measures may be context dependent and may differ from official recommendations. An ethnographic approach was used through observations and conver

Defining correlates of protection for mammalian livestock vaccines against high-priority viral diseases.

Enhancing livestock biosecurity is critical to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers, global and local economies, and food security. Vaccination is fundamental to the control and prevention of exotic and endemic high-priority infectious livestock diseases. Successful implementation of vaccination in a biosecurity plan is underpinned by a strong understanding of correlates of protection-those elements of the immune response that can reliably predict the level of protection from viral challenge. While correlates of protection have been successfully characterized for many human viral vaccines, for

Setting priorities for non-regulatory animal health in Ireland: results from an expert Policy Delphi study and a farmer priority identification survey.

Agriculture is a very important contributor to the Irish economy. In Ireland, national animal health services have been a government, rather than an industry, responsibility. In 2009, Animal Health Ireland (AHI) was established to provide a partnership approach to national leadership of non-regulatory animal health issues (those not subject to national and/or EU regulation). The objectives of this study were to elicit opinion from experts and farmers about non-regulatory animal health issues facing Irish livestock industries, including prioritisation of animal health issues and identification

Use of herd information for predicting Salmonella status in pig herds.

Salmonella surveillance-and-control programs in pigs are highly resource demanding, so alternative cost-effective approaches are desirable. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a tool for predicting the Salmonella test status in pig herds based on herd information collected from 108 industrial farrow-to-finish pig herds in Portugal. A questionnaire including known risk factors for Salmonella was used. A factor analysis model was developed to identify relevant factors that were then tested for association with Salmonella status. Three factors were identified and labelled: general b

Heracleum mantegazzianum and Toxicodendron succedaneum: plants of human health significance in New Zealand and the National Pest Plant Accord.

New Zealand's National Pest Plant Accord (NPPA) is a voluntary and cooperative agreement between industry, regional councils, and central government departments with biosecurity responsibilities (primarily the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Department of Conservation). Plant species included in the NPPA are declared unwanted organisms under the Biosecurity Act 1993, which prevents their sale, propagation, or distribution across the country. Although MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (the lead agency in New Zealand's biosecurity system) has evaluated the potential human health impacts o

The relationship between components of the biosafety incident response competence for clinical nursing staff: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biosafety, which pertains to the prevention of exposure to biological hazards that could pose risks to human health, ecosystems, and the environment, has become a global concern. Nowadays, biosafety threats are widespread and long-standing, posing a severe risk to all human lives. A key measure in tackling biosafety issues is to clarify the competence of clinical nursing staff in responding to biosafety incidents. Nevertheless, little network analysis research has been done on the relationships between the components of clinical nurses’ biosafety incident response competence. PURPO

Systematic review of transmission factors, management interventions, and elimination techniques related to porcine epidemic diarrhea.

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious enteric coronavirus that has caused severe economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The virus spreads rapidly through fecal-oral transmission and contaminated fomites. Despite extensive research on vaccines, biosecurity, and inactivation strategies, PEDV remains endemic in the US. This systematic review evaluated the key epidemiological factors relevant to the feasibility of regional or national PEDV eradication. METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature published since 1990 was conducted with Pub

Determination of the sources and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Salmonella isolated from the poultry industry in Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia set an ambitious masterplan to increase chicken meat and egg production from 2015 to 2020. Poultry breeding, multiplication and distribution centers in the country have received executive order to import, amplify and distribute commercial chickens to end users. The biosecurity and the pathogen fauna of the centers have not been evaluated as to whether the centers could implement the mission effectively without any risk. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the biosecurity practices and the pathogen prevalence, risk factors and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) us

From mRNA stabilisation to mirror life: Biological orthogonality, incremental risk, and anticipatory governance.

Molecular stabilisation of mRNA is central to the development of therapeutics. Stabilisation is gained through modifications that cause mRNA to resist degradation, evade immune recognition, and prolong expression. These modifications introduce degrees of biological orthogonality, which, in this context, is the extent to which a molecule becomes invisible to the natural systems that would otherwise process or eliminate it. We propose that orthogonality provides a framework for understanding biosecurity risks across the spectrum of synthetic nucleic acid modification, from current mRNA therapeut

Ensuring a negligible risk of Trichinella in pig farming from a control perspective.

Today, the majority of pigs are raised in industrialised pig production systems with a high level of biosecurity resulting in a negligible risk of Trichinella. Carcass testing therefore seems less relevant if the aim of testing is to protect public health. However, traditional pig production (including backyard production) still occurs, and organic pig production is on the increase in some areas, suggesting a continued need for carcass testing from such compartments. These diverse developments within pig production have changed the epidemiologic situation of Trichinella. This has necessitated

A Herd Investigation Tool in Support of the Irish Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Eradication Programme.

Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) is an important endemic disease of cattle. In Ireland, an industry-led compulsory eradication programme began in January 2013. The main elements of this programme are the identification and elimination of persistently infected (PI) calves by testing all new-borns, the implementation of biosecurity to prevent re-introduction of disease and continuous surveillance. In 2016, a standardised framework was developed to investigate herds with positive results. This is delivered by trained private veterinary practitioners (PVP). The investigation's aims are 3-fold: firstly

What will it take for behavior to change? Findings from a baseline evaluation of an intervention to reduce antimicrobial use among smallholder poultry farmers in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when pathogens become immune to drugs designed to eliminate or suppress their growth. AMR is accelerated by the inappropriate use of antimicrobials, a common practice among small-medium scale poultry farmers. We conducted a mixed-methods baseline exploration for an intervention to strengthen biosecurity practices and prudent antimicrobial use (AMU) among small-scale poultry farmers in Zimbabwe, to identify key baseline behaviors and their determinants as well as potential intervention entry points. METHODS: December 2024 to April 2025, we it

A Holistic Assessment of the Risks and Benefits of the Synthesis of Horsepox Virus.

The re-creation of horsepox virus, an extinct orthopoxvirus with similarity to smallpox virus, has caused concerns in the biosecurity and biodefense communities that the technical capabilities achieved could advance the re-creation of smallpox virus by nefarious actors. The work is now published. While the authors went through due biosecurity diligence at their research institution and with the proper Canadian federal authorities, now that the experiments have been published, there is an opportunity to discuss the dual use risks and benefits of the research itself, as well as those associated

Politics of life: Provincializing biopolitics in crisis governance.

This paper examines Ghana's COVID-19 response through a biopolitical and biosecurity lens. Drawing on Michel Foucault's concept of biopolitics, it analyzes how interventions such as lockdowns, biosurveillance, and vaccination campaigns functioned both as technologies of care and instruments of control, expanding state authority over biological and social life. The study shows that biopolitics in Ghana did not replicate Western models but emerged as a provincialized and context-dependent form of power shaped by infrastructural constraints, informal economies, and postcolonial state formation. Risk communication and farmer engagement in endemic livestock disease control: A qualitative study of bovine tuberculosis in Ireland.

Persistent endemic livestock diseases continue to challenge animal health systems worldwide despite sustained investment in biosecurity and disease control. Alongside epidemiological barriers, tensions between livestock producers and regulatory authorities can undermine disease management, highlighting the importance of understanding the social and behavioural dimensions of disease control. Although farmers' responses to endemic diseases are shaped by complex social, cultural and emotional factors, less is known about how official risk communication influences engagement with biosecurity and e
