Molecular detection of Bartonella species and Coxiella endosymbiont in human-biting Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks in Korea.

Bartonella species are vector-borne pathogens that infect a wide range of hosts, including humans. Although several Bartonella species have been identified in rodents and arthropods in Korea, information on Bartonella detection in ticks removed from human patients remains limited. This study investigated the presence of Bartonella species DNA in human-biting ticks collected in Korea and screened for other tick-associated bacteria, including Coxiella endosymbiont. From January to December 2018, 35 ticks were removed from 29 tick-bitten patients in Jeollanam-do and Gwangju, Korea. Ticks were ide

Analysis of the 24-h biting patterns and human exposures to malaria vectors in south-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Afrotropical malaria vectors are generally believed to bite nocturnally, leading to the predominant use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), which target indoor, nighttime-biting mosquitoes. This focus is reinforced by biases in entomological surveys, which largely overlook daytime mosquito activity. However, recent evidence challenges this paradigm, showing that Anopheles biting can extend way into the daytime, coinciding with human activities at dawn, daytime and evenings, suggesting a broader risk spectrum and potential protection gaps. We have therefore investigated the diurnal

Yersinia pestis can infect the Pawlowsky glands of human body lice and be transmitted by louse bite.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is a highly lethal vector-borne pathogen responsible for killing large portions of Europe's population during the Black Death of the Middle Ages. In the wild, Y. pestis cycles between fleas and rodents; occasionally spilling over into humans bitten by infectious fleas. For this reason, fleas and the rats harboring them have been considered the main epidemiological drivers of previous plague pandemics. Human ectoparasites, such as the body louse (Pediculus humanus humanus), have largely been discounted due to their reputation as inefficient vector

Application of recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor in repair of the aged dog bite wound.

BACKGROUND: Dog bite wounds usually have severe local soft tissue damage and the wounds are likely to be contaminated by a large number of bacteria or even a series of rare pathogenic bacteria, leading to repeated infection and delayed wound healing. Recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (rh-bFGF) has excellent ability to promote wound repair and widely used in various complicated wounds. OBJECTIVE: Observe the clinical efficacy of Recombinant human basic Fibroblast growth factor (rh-bFGF) applicated in the treatment of dog bite wounds. METHODS: A total of 31 patients (16 adult an

Borrelia burgdorferi not confirmed in human-biting Amblyomma americanum ticks from the southeastern United States.

The predominant human-biting tick throughout the southeastern United States is Amblyomma americanum. Its ability to transmit pathogens causing Lyme disease-like illnesses is a subject of ongoing controversy. Results of previous testing by the Department of Defense Human Tick Test Kit Program and other laboratories indicated that it is highly unlikely that A. americanum transmits any pathogen that causes Lyme disease. In contrast, a recent publication by Clark and colleagues (K. L. Clark, B. Leydet, and S. Hartman, Int. J. Med. Sci. 10:915-931, 2013) reported detection of Lyme group Borrelia in

Effect of bite force and diet composition on craniofacial diversification of Southern South American human populations.

Ecological factors can be important to shape the patterns of morphological variation among human populations. Particularly, diet plays a fundamental role in craniofacial variation due to both the effect of the nutritional status-mostly dependent on the type and amount of nutrients consumed-on skeletal growth and the localized effects of masticatory forces. We examine these two dimensions of diet and evaluate their influence on morphological diversification of human populations from southern South America during the late Holocene. Cranial morphology was measured as 3D coordinates defining the f

Decline in human dog-bite cases during a street dog sterilisation programme in Jaipur, India.

Human dog-bite injuries are a major public health problem, particularly where there are large populations of free-roaming or street dogs. Dog bites are also the major source of human rabies infections. There is little information on the means to reduce these injuries. Monthly human animal-bite injury records from January 2003 to June 2011 were obtained from the main government hospital in Jaipur, India. The data were analysed and compared with records of pregnancy in street dogs in Jaipur obtained from a street dog sterilisation programme. Human animal-bite injuries showed a seasonal pattern w

"Bird biting" mosquitoes and human disease: a review of the role of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes in epidemiology.

The transmission of vector-borne pathogens is greatly influenced by the ecology of their vector, which is in turn shaped by genetic ancestry, the environment, and the hosts that are fed on. One group of vectors, the mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex, play key roles in the transmission of a range of pathogens including several viruses such as West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, avian malaria (Plasmodium spp.), and filarial worms. The Cx. pipiens complex includes Culex pipiens pipiens with two forms, pipiens and molestus, Culex pipiens pallens, Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex austr

Factors associated with delay to emergency department presentation, antibiotic usage and admission for human bite injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence and consensus on best practices on the management of human bite injuries is lacking. Our objective was to identify factors that are associated with delay to emergency department (ED) presentation, antibiotic usage and patient admission. METHODS: We present a retrospective chart review of adults treated for human bites. Multivariable logistic regression models used demographic characteristics and bite circumstances and characteristics as factors associated with ED presentation more than 24 hours after the bite, antibiotic usage and hospital admission. RESULTS: Of the 388

Characteristics of the human and pet populations in animal bite incidents recorded at two Air Force bases.

Animal bites reported at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., were investigated to determine the incidence of reported bites and possible causes. Data were collected by abstracting information contained in animal bite files maintained by the Base veterinary Office. A total of 696 bite incidents were reported for the 24 months from January 1976 through December 1977. An overall incidence rate of 1,390 bites per 100,000 persons was calculated from these statistics. This rate is far greater than the previous estimates of 800 animal bites per 100,000 for an urban populatio

First-aid for snake-bite: efficacy of a constrictive bandage with limb immobilization in the management of human envenomation.

A herpetologist was bitten on the thumb by a common brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis). A constrictive bandage to impede lymphatic and capillary flow was applied, and the upper limb was immobilized. Two hours after the bite, there were no signs of symptoms of envenomation and venom (to a sensitivity of 0.5 ng/mL) was undetectable in serum and urine. Within five minutes of removal of the constrictive bandage, significant signs of envenomation developed, and serum and urine levels of venom rose significantly. The patient received two ampoules of brown-snake antivenom, and had recovered within six

Demographic patterns of human antibody levels to Simulium damnosum s.l. saliva in onchocerciasis-endemic areas: An indicator of exposure to vector bites.

BACKGROUND: In onchocerciasis endemic areas in Africa, heterogenous biting rates by blackfly vectors on humans are assumed to partially explain age- and sex-dependent infection patterns with Onchocerca volvulus. To underpin these assumptions and further improve predictions made by onchocerciasis transmission models, demographic patterns in antibody responses to salivary antigens of Simulium damnosum s.l. are evaluated as a measure of blackfly exposure. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Recently developed IgG and IgM anti-saliva immunoassays for S. damnosum s.l. were applied to blood samples col

AGS-v PLUS, a Mosquito Salivary Peptide Vaccine, Modulates the Response to Aedes Mosquito Bites in Humans.

BACKGROUND: The global health burden of mosquito-borne viruses, including dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya, is rising due to climate change and globalisation, which favour mosquito habitat expansion. The genetic diversity of these viruses complicates the development of virus-specific vaccines or antivirals, highlighting the need for pan-viral strategies. As the common vector for these pathogens, mosquitoes and specifically their salivary proteins represent a promising target for such interventions. Mosquito saliva, secreted into the skin during biting, has immunomodulatory effects t
