Fully automated blink detection for uveal melanoma radiotherapy.

Uveal melanoma is a widespread neoplasm in the eye that cause vision defects. The disease may result in loss of eye, even loss of life with a risk of metastasis to other tissues. There have been proposed various treatment methods to overcome the disease including enucleation and radiotherapy. Radiotherapy treatment is certainly preferable since it avoids the loss of eye. The treatment is applied with radioactive beam directed to the tumor, and thus the eye must be kept steady usually with local anesthesia. However, anesthesia has many health risks; therefore it is preferable to perform this op

Dynamics and function of the tear film in relation to the blink cycle.

Great strides have recently been made in quantitative measurements of tear film thickness and thinning, mathematical modeling thereof and linking these to sensory perception. This paper summarizes recent progress in these areas and reports on new results. The complete blink cycle is used as a framework that attempts to unify the results that are currently available. Understanding of tear film dynamics is aided by combining information from different imaging methods, including fluorescence, retroillumination and a new high-speed stroboscopic imaging system developed for studying the tear film d

Visual attentional blink in dyslexic children: Parameterizing the deficit.

The parameters generated by a curve fitting method on the visual attentional blink (AB) of 14 dyslexic and 14 control children were compared. The two groups differed on AB minimum parameters, whereas both AB duration and AB amplitude parameters were the same. The results suggest that low AB minimum is associated with poor reading. Moreover, phonological awareness was found to correlate with visual AB parameters in the dyslexic group. Overall, the present study provides new methodological insights regarding the assessment of the AB and visual sequential processing in relation to reading disorde

Cardiopulmonary baroreceptors affect reflexive startle eye blink.

Baroafferent signals originating from the 'high pressure' arterial vascular system are known to impact reflexive startle eye blink responding. However, it is not known whether baroafferent feedback of the 'low pressure' cardiopulmonary system loading status exerts a similar effect. Lower Body Negative Pressure (LBNP) at gradients of 0, -10, -20, and -30mm Hg was applied to unload cardiopulmonary baroreceptors. Acoustic startle noise bursts were delivered 230 and 530ms after spontaneous R-waves, when arterial baroreceptors are either loaded or unloaded. Eye blink responses were measured by EMG,

The effect of multiple stimuli on the modulation of the 'nociceptive' blink reflex.

The 'nociceptive' blink reflex is a method of examining human trigeminal pain pathways. We explored temporal summation of this reflex by using a train of pulses, rather than a single pulse, and remote activation of diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC), to improve reliability, flexibility and nociceptive specificity of this technique. The R2 component of the nociceptive blink reflex response (nR2) was assessed in 28 healthy volunteers using between 1 and 7 pulses per stimulus train (inter-pulse interval 5 ms). The effect of DNIC on single-, double-, and triple-pulse nR2 was investigated. C

Prognostic value of the blink reflex in acoustic neuroma surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The study goal was to demonstrate that blink reflex analysis can predict postoperative facial nerve outcome in cerebellopontine angle tumor surgery. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: In an open and prospective study conducted at a single tertiary care center over 3 years, 91 subjects with a vestibular schwannoma filling the internal auditory meatus were enrolled and operated on via a translabyrinthine approach. The difference in latency of the early response (DeltaR1) of the blink reflex between the pathologic side and the healthy side was calculated in every patient during a co

[Assessment of blink reflex in hemiparetic patients after stroke].

Blink reflex (BR) was evaluated in a group of 50 hemiparetic patients after stroke with lesions localized in cerebral hemispheres and in a group of 12 healthy controls. The response was examined and compared, after stimulation of the supraorbital nerve, on both paretic and "Работает" side in affected patients. Abnormalities of BR were observed in late response only. The damage of one hemisphere affects the BR bilaterally. We found prolongation of latency and decrease of amplitude of late responses bilaterally when stimulating the supraorbital nerve of the paretic side. On the contrary, stimulat

[Hyperexcitability of the blink reflex in a child with opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome].

A 13-month-old girl developed opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome in association with neuroblastoma. She showed irritability, hyperhidrosis and a bad temper. Serum and urinary vanilmandelic acid, homovanilic acid and catecholamines were elevated at the same time. Chest CT demonstrated the presence of neuroblastoma in the paravertebral region. Cranial CT and MRI revealed no abnormal findings. Brainstem auditory-evoked potentials and short latency somatosensory evoked potentials were normal, whereas blink reflex showed long duration and high amplitude of late components (R2 and R2') indicating hyperex

Changes in blink rates of Nigerian schizophrenics treated with chlorpromazine.

Chlorpromazine was administered over a 4-8 week period to 40 schizophrenic patients who had not received previous neuroleptic drug treatment out of a total of 222 schizophrenic patients seen during the study period. Pre-treatment spontaneous eye blink rate was high in the 40 schizophrenics when compared to 34 normal controls, (22 vs 14 blinks/min respectively, t = 17.04, df = 72, p < 0.001). Clinical improvement in the schizophrenic patients correlated with a significant reduction in their pre-treatment versus post-treatment spontaneous eye blink rate (22 vs 9 blinks/min, t = 18.83, df = 78, p

Blink reflex and the masseter inhibitory reflex in patients with dystonia.

The excitatory and inhibitory interneuronal pathways in the brainstem are tested by examining the blink reflex and the masseter inhibitory reflex, respectively. We studied the R2 component of the blink reflex and the SP2 component of the masseter inhibitory reflex and their recovery cycle in 56 patients with various forms of dystonia. In patients with cranial, cervical, and generalized dystonia, but not in patients with extracranial segmental dystonia, the recovery cycle of both reflexes was enhanced. The recovery cycle of R2 and SP2 can demonstrate subclinical changes in excitability of brain

Increased blink rates in schizophrenics. Influences of neuroleptics and psychopathology.

During a standardized visuomotor task, eye blinking, a possible parameter of central dopaminergic activity, was studied in 18 previously medicated and eight drug-naive schizophrenic in-patients in the acute state and during remission. Whereas schizophrenics executed the visuomotor task with the same precision as age- and sex-matched normal control subjects did, the mean blink rate was increased in both schizophrenic groups. During neuroleptic treatment, the mean blink rate was reduced only in the group of drug-naive patients, but not in the previously neuroleptic treated schizophrenics. This v

Study of the relationship between lacrimation and blink in VDT work.

VDT (Visual Display Terminal) work generates various symptoms in operators' eyes such as strain, a sensation of dryness, the presence of a foreign body, and so on. Research suggests that lacrimal abnormality may be related causally to such symptoms. In this paper, the relationship between lacrimation (the secretion of tears) and the frequency of blink due to VDT work in health subjects and VDT workers with such symptoms, and consequent therapeutic methods, were studied. When lacrimation, BUT (Break-UP Time), and the frequency of blink before and after VDT work compared in the control subjects

Prognostic value of blink test in patients with facial paralysis.

In order to gain an early estimate of a prognosis for facial paralysis, the vertical eye movements associated with eyeblinks (Bell's phenomenon) in 39 patients with acute unilateral Bell's paralysis and Hunt's syndrome and of 21 normal subjects were recorded by electronystagmography. These data were then analysed with a small digital computer (PDP 11/34). The results were compared with electroneurography (ENoG) and nerve excitability test (NET) results and can be summarized as follows: 1. Difference in velocity and amplitude between left and right eye movement during eyeblink (called blink ind

A Robust Approach to Quantify Nocifensive Blink Reflex Responsiveness.

The modulation of the hand-blink reflex (HBR), a prototypical nocifensive response, is increasingly used to investigate defensive behaviour, related to the notion of peripersonal space. However, HBR responsiveness is highly variable across participants. This variability has led researchers to use several seemingly arbitrary criteria to determine whether a subject should be included as a participant in a study. But are these criteria justified? Can better and more rigorous criteria be formulated? Does the traditional division into responders and non-responders reflect a practical decision to ex

Comparison of the blink reflex in classical and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Previous findings indicate that the blink reflex is useful to distinguish between primary (classical/idiopathic) and secondary trigeminal neuralgia. No prior studies have investigated whether the blink reflex could identify differences in electrophysiological responses between classical and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. With this in mind, we investigated the blink reflex in a cohort of classical and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia patients. METHODS: Participants were consecutively enrolled in the study. According to magnetic resonance imaging findings, the patients were subgrou

Changes of Blink Reflex in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Blink reflex provides an objective assessment of the cranial and central nervous systems. However, the relationships between body mass index, dizziness, and BR have not been explored in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Moreover, R2 duration, one of the parameters of the blink reflex, has not been studied to date. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics and influencing factors of blink reflex in patients with T2DM. We included 45 healthy subjects and 105 hospitalized patients with T2DM. The relationships between these parameters and sex, age, body mass in

Video Viewing Blink Rate in Normal and Dry Eyes.

OBJECTIVES: Decreased blink rate during video display viewing (VDV) has been reported; however, patients with tear dysfunction often complain of more frequent blinking. The objectives were to compare blink rates during conversation and VDV in normal and dry eyes and correlate blink rates with signs and symptoms. METHODS: Blink rate was measured with an infrared blink sensor for 2 minutes during conversation and for 2 minutes while watching a video clip (VDV) in patients without dry eye disease (control, n=18) and in patients with tear dysfunction from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD, n=23),
