Social media for arthritis-related comparative effectiveness and safety research and the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising.

BACKGROUND: Social media may complement traditional data sources to answer comparative effectiveness/safety questions after medication licensure. METHODS: The Treato platform was used to analyze all publicly available social media data including Facebook, blogs, and discussion boards for posts mentioning inflammatory arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid, psoriatic). Safety events were self-reported by patients and mapped to medical ontologies, resolving synonyms. Disease and symptom-related treatment indications were manually redacted. The units of analysis were unique terms in posts. Pre-specified con

In many voices: exploring end-of-life care through patient, caregiver and physician narratives.

As the focus on end-of-life care intensifies, so too does the need to better understand the experiences of patients, caregivers and physicians. Delivering empathetic care requires a shared understanding of illness and its meaning and impact. The narratives of patients, caregivers and physicians each offer a distinct perspective on clinical experiences, yet comparative research is uncommon. This study compares written narratives about end-of-life illness and care by these groups. We created an archive of 332 first-person written narratives about end of life (patient=65, caregiver=156, physician=

Towards validating invalidated knowledge: a discourse analysis of firsthand accounts of hearing voices.

BACKGROUND: As Foucault historically traced, dialogs about madness were silenced with the emergence of biomedical psychiatry. The silence entailed the epistemic violence of invalidating persons who hear voices as knowers, arguably leaving them without validating sensemaking languages for firsthand experiences. This article analyzes five Norwegian firsthand accounts of hearing voices, and how they differed from the predominating biomedical psychiatry discourse, in search of validating languages and knowledge that may facilitate making sense of voice-hearing for persons who hear voices. METHODS

Treating childhood intermittent distance exotropia: a qualitative study of decision making.

BACKGROUND: Engaging patients (parents/families) in treatment decisions is increasingly recognised as important and beneficial. Yet where the evidence base for treatment options is limited, as with intermittent distance exotropia (X(T)), this presents a challenge for families and clinicians. The purpose of this study was to explore how decisions are made in the management and treatment of X(T) and what can be done to support decision-making for clinicians, parents and children. METHODS: This was a qualitative study using face to face interviews with consultant ophthalmologists and orthoptists

The Rise in Homemade Sunscreen Trends and Future Impacts on Skin Cancer Risk: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The trend of homemade sunscreen recipes has rapidly gained popularity over the last decade, being largely fueled by social media influencers, natural health blogs, and the growing mistrust of large health organizations like the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consumers are increasingly drawn to products labeled "natural," "organic," "vegan," and "cruelty-free," often conflating these terms with safety and effectiveness. However, when applied to sun protection, these assumptions can be dangerously misleading. According to the FDA, there is no verified mathematical formula tha

Assessment of Quality and Reliability of YouTube Videos on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy including Hypnosis.

Hypnosis combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-hypnosis) is a type of psychological treatment that focuses on how people think and behave in various mental and medical illnesses. It treats behavioral and emotional issues by tapping into the subconscious mind. Patients who are hypnotized are more open to new ideas and less prone to decline hard ones. The result is that it is simpler to adopt the healthy cognitive patterns and habits that CBT tries to promote. YouTube is a great resource for health-related education that has the power to greatly impact the choices and actions of medica

Methodologies and methods for the development, evaluation and implementation of psychosocial interventions for dementia: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Research on psychosocial interventions for dementia demonstrates increased rigour and robustness. However, if we are to influence practice, beyond results from randomised controlled trials, a variety of types and sources of evidence is needed. The Medical Research Council (MRC) framework offers a valuable guide for developing, evaluating and implementing complex interventions, to facilitate integration of research into practice. There is limited knowledge of how researchers design, evaluate and implement psychosocial intervention studies in dementia, using the MRC framework. This

Recruitment, Retention, and Training of Citizen Scientists in Translational Medicine Research: A Citizen Science Initiative on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Citizen science is a participatory science approach in which members of the public (citizens) collaborate with scientists and professional researchers and become involved in research and innovation activities, resulting in the co-creation of scientific knowledge and innovation. Citizen science has been widely applied in research, particularly in the social sciences, environmental sciences, information and communication technologies, and public health. However, the application of this approach in clinical sciences, particularly in translational medicine research, is still nascent. This explorat
