A pilot study of cytokine levels and white blood cell counts in the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To characterize the early cytokine response of patients presenting to the emergency department with necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and to determine whether serum cytokine levels and white blood cell (WBC) counts may be useful in distinguishing NF from other severe soft-tissue infections. METHODS: White blood cell counts and cytokine levels (IL-1beta, IL-1Ra, IL-6, IL-8, IL-18, and IFN-gamma) were measured in patients presenting to the emergency department with severe soft-tissue infections and high suspicion of NF. Necrotizing fasciitis was confirmed intraoperatively and by surg

Recovery of dendritic cell counts and function in peripheral blood of cancer patients after chemotherapy.

Dendritic cell (DC) counts and function were assayed in peripheral blood of lymphoma and solid tumor patients before and after chemotherapy. The DC counts declined significantly within the first week from the start of chemotherapy, recovered in the second week, and exceeded the baseline values in the third week. DC recovery was usually similar after the first and after the last cycle of chemotherapy. DC1 and DC2 subsets followed the pattern of reconstitution found for the DC population as a whole. Monocytes and granulocytes recovered 1-2 weeks later than DC. The primary proliferative response

Relationship between the count of milk somatic cells and the peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations in sows.

The aim of the study was to examine subpopulations of peripheral blood lymphocytes of mastitic and normal sows. Since number of cells in the milk reflects the intensity of response to mastitis process, relationship between level of milk somatic cells and peripheral blood lymphocytes was determined. No differences were found between mastitic and healthy sows in the percentage and absolute number of blood neutrophils and lymphocytes, T- and B-lymphocytes as well as in subpopulations of T-lymphocytes. It was found that milk somatic cell count positively correlates with the percentage but not with

The Impact of Red Blood Cell Count and Hemoglobin Levels on Bone Remodeling in Mandibular Angle Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified bone remodeling in the mandibular angle region (MAR) as a key factor influencing outcomes after mandibular angle osteotomy (MAO). This study investigates hematologic predictors-red blood cell (RBC) count and hemoglobin (Hb) levels-and their correlation with postoperative MAR bone remodeling. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 135 patients who underwent MAO between January 2015 and December 2022. Bone remodeling was assessed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging at two time points: T1 (immediately postoperatively) and T2

Fetal and Neonatal Reticulocyte Count Response to Intrauterine Transfusion for the Treatment of Red Blood Cell Alloimmunization.

Management of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn relies on monitoring of maternal antibody titers, fetal ultrasound, and fetal middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity studies and is generally treated by intrauterine transfusion (IUT). Few studies have explored fetal and neonate physiological responses to IUT. Our objective was to examine fetal erythropoietic response and to examine neonatal erythropoietic effects after treatment. Thirty-six patients treated from 2005 to 2015 were identified retroactively. The time course of treatment, including gestational age and number of IUT,

White blood cell count may identify abnormal cardiometabolic phenotype and preclinical organ damage in overweight/obese children.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subclinical inflammation is a central component of cardiometabolic disease risk in obese subjects. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the white blood cell count (WBCc) may help to identify an abnormal cardiometabolic phenotype in overweight (Ow) or obese (Ob) children. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional sample of 2835 Ow/Ob children and adolescents (age 6-18 years) was recruited from 10 Italian centers for the care of obesity. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were assessed in the overall sample. Waist to height ratio (WhtR), alanine aminotransferase

Erythrocyte deformability and white blood cell count are associated with aspirin resistance in high-risk vascular patients.

Recently the phenomenon of aspirin resistance has been object of several studies, but no data are available on the possible role of the haemorheologic parameters in affecting platelet function and resistance to antiplatelet agents. Aim of our study was to evaluate platelet function and haemorheology in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), receiving double antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel. The study population included 301 (231M/70F; age: 66 +/- 13 yrs) consecutive adult patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Careggi, with

Significance of high and normal neonatal nucleated red blood cell count in small-for-gestational-age newborns.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the obstetrical and neonatal outcome in small-for-gestational age (SGA) and appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) fetuses with normal and elevated neonatal nucleated red blood cell counts. Therefore the nucleated red blood cell count was assessed immediately after birth in 906 neonates delivered at our institution and the perinatal and neonatal data were compared. Postnatally, infants were classified as SGA if they had a birth weight for given gestational age below the 10th percentile. Neonates were allocated to four groups according to their nucleat

Human CD33 deficiency is associated with mild alteration of circulating white blood cell counts.

The single pass transmembrane protein CD33 is enriched in phagocytic and hematopoietic cell types, such as monocytes. CD33 is thought to be associated with immune cell function, susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease, and rare leukemias. Antagonism or genetic ablation of CD33 has been proposed to treat Alzheimer's disease, hematological cancers, and as a selection mechanism for enriching genetically altered blood cells. To understand the impact of chronic CD33 loss or ablation, we describe individuals who we confirmed to be missing CD33 due to germline loss of function variants. Through PheWAS-

When Blood Cell Counts Matter: Hypereosinophilic Syndrome as a Rare Cause of Ischemic Strokes.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a rare condition characterized by elevated eosinophil counts (>1.5 x 109 on two consecutive measurements), which are of myeloid clonal in origin or are driven by excess cytokines. One subtype of HES exhibits the Fip1-like 1-platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (FIP1L1-PDGFRA) fusion gene, a gain-of-function mutation resulting in a hyperactive tyrosine kinase. HES, especially the FIP1L1-PDGFRA variant, exhibits an excellent response to chemotherapy with imatinib. In this report, we present a 38-year-old patient with no contributory past medical histo

Differential white blood cell counts in rabbits: a comparison of the Advia 2120 and a manual method.

We evaluated the performance of the Advia 2120 (Siemens) differential leukocyte count (A-Diff) compared to the manual method (M-Diff) in rabbits. EDTA-anticoagulated blood samples collected for diagnostic purposes were analyzed within 6 h of collection. The M-Diff was performed blindly by 2 observers on blood smears by counting 200 cells. We initially included 117 samples; 25 samples were excluded because of suboptimal gating of leukocytes in the Advia peroxidase cytogram or poor blood smear quality. The correlation between the A-Diff and M-Diff was very high for heterophils (r = 0.924, p < 0.

Nucleated red blood cells count as a prognostic biomarker in predicting the complications of asphyxia in neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Nucleated-red-blood-cells (NRBC) count in umbilical cord of newborns is been suggested as a sign of birth asphyxia. The present study was conducted to explore the value of NRBC count in prognosis of asphyxiated neonates. METHODS: Sixty-three neonates with asphyxia were followed up for two years. Maternal and neonatal information was recorded follow by clinical and laboratory evaluation. NRBC-level was determined per 100 white-blood-cells (WBC). After discharge, follow-up of asphyxiated infants was performed using Denver II test at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Neonates were divided into

A patient with white blood cell counts more than a million: A diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Prolymphocytic leukemias (PLLs) are rare mature lymphoid disorders of B- and T-cell subtypes with distinct features and an aggressive clinical course. PLL represents only 2% of all mature lymphocytic leukemias in adults. T-PLL represents 20% of all PLLs cases. T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is more rare and more rapidly progressive and aggressive than B-PLL; it is generally resistant to conventional chemotherapy, and historically the median survival has been about 7 months. Clinicians will often only see a case of T-PLL once every 5 to 10 years, which makes recognition of the disorder

Absolute nucleated red blood cells counts do not predict the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) have higher absolute nucleated red blood cells (aNRBCs) counts at birth than controls as a proxy measurement of exposure to intrauterine hypoxia. METHODS: We studied 39 preterm infants with BPD and compared them to 39 pair-matched controls without BPD. Criteria for exclusion in both groups included factors that may influence the aNRBCs at birth. RESULTS: In logistic regression, when pre-eclampsia, birthweight, gender, antenatal steroid therapy, 1-min Apgar scores, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) (or su

Gastric fluid cytokines are associated with chorioamnionitis and white blood cell counts in preterm infants.

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine whether the concentration of cytokines in the gastric fluid at birth was associated with chorioamnionitis or funisitis and with the white blood cell counts of very premature newborns. METHODS: We retrieved gastric fluid from 27 preterm infants with a gestational age of <29 weeks within 1 h of birth and used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1beta, epithelial cell-derived neutrophil-activating peptide (ENA)-78, IL-8 and growth-related oncogene (Gro)-alpha. Increased nucleated red blood cells counts in prolonged rupture of membranes is not erythropoietin driven.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine the hypothesis that prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM) is associated with increased cord blood erythropoietin (EPO) concentrations, proportional to the duration of ruptured membranes. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a prospective, cross-sectional, observational (noninterventional) cohort study of mother-infant pairs. Criteria for inclusion were as follows: active labor with or without ruptured membranes and vaginally delivered neonates. Excluded were infants with major factors known to be associated with a potential increase in fetal erythropoiesi
