Interrupted circulation and re-emergence of human bocavirus following COVID-19: A 10-year retrospective analysis from a tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea.

In pediatric respiratory infections, human bocavirus (HBoV), a DNA virus in the Parvoviridae family, is increasingly being recognized as a major pathogen. However, the long-term epidemiological patterns of HBoV, particularly under the ecological shifts induced by the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, remain unclear. In this retrospective study, we analyzed 11,643 specimens obtained from patients with respiratory symptoms at Dankook University Hospital, Korea, between 2015 and 2024, encompassing both inpatients and outpatients. We evaluated the distribution of HBoV positivity with respect t

Clinical and molecular characterization of children and adults with respiratory bocavirus infection in Mexico: a cross-sectional nested study within the ILI002 prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Human Bocaviruses (HBoV) can cause acute respiratory tract infections. High coinfection rates cloud its pathogenicity. This study sought to describe the clinical features of HBoV1 disease in children and adults with Influenza-like illness (ILI), exploring associations between viral load, clinical features, and seasonality. METHODS: Patients who tested positive for HBoV1 by polymerase chain reaction, enrolled from April 2010 to March 2014 in the ILI002 prospective observational cohort study were included in this cross-sectional nested study. Participants were included in ILI002 if

Detection and genome analysis of human bocavirus 1-4 from hospitalized children with acute lower respiratory tract infection and symptoms of wheezing in Shanghai.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the clinical and molecular epidemiology of human bocavirus (HBoV)1-4 in hospitalized children in Shanghai suffering from acute lower respiratory tract infection with symptoms of wheezing. HBoV1-4 was detected by nested PCR from 275 nasopharyngeal secretion samples collected from hospitalized children. The HBoV-positive DNA sequences were aligned and phylogenetic trees were constructed. The detection rate of HBoV1 was 5.45% (15/275), which was second only to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). HBoV1 was co-detected with other potential pathogens in most of

The impact of anthropogenic pressure on the virological quality of water from the Tiber River, Italy.

UNLABELLED: The objective of the present study was to assess the occurrence of major waterborne enteric viruses (enterovirus, norovirus, adenovirus, rotavirus, hepatitis A and E virus) along the Tiber River in Italy, in areas affected by different kinds of anthropogenic pressure (agricultural, urban, industrial and pristine). Moreover, in light of the recent abundant detection of human bocavirus in urban wastewater samples in Italy, the occurrence of this virus was also assessed. Virus detection was based on nested PCR followed by sequencing, and on real-time PCR. A correlation with anthropoge

Evolutionary time-scale of primate bocaviruses.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is associated with acute gastroenteritis in humans, occurring mostly in young children and elderly people. Four bocavirus genotypes (HBoV1-HBoV4) have been found so far. Since there were no data on the contribution of HBoV to gastroenteritis in Russia, 1781 fecal samples collected from infants hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Novosibirsk, Russia during one year were tested for the presence of nucleic acids from HBoV and three major gastrointestinal viruses (rotavirus A, norovirus II, and astrovirus). HBoV was detected only in 1.9% of the samples: HBoV1 was dete

Evaluation of human bocavirus as well as other well-known viral etiologic agents by PCR in the cerebrospinal fluid of children with clinical impression of viral meningoencephalitis referred to the Children's Medical Center in Tehran, Iran, from 2019 to 2020.

Viral meningoencephalitis is one of the most important diseases that most commonly affect children. In many cases of viral meningoencephalitis, the underlying cause of the disease is not identified, raising the possibility of a variety of pathogens that are not routinely tested. Bocaviruses belong to a newly identified class of viruses that have been reported in some studies to be associated with viral encephalitis. In the present study, we investigated the prevalence of bocaviruses and other viruses in the patients suspected of having viral encephalitis and their associations with various dem

Is the role of rhinoviruses as causative agents of pediatric community-acquired pneumonia over-estimated?

UNLABELLED: The role that rhinoviruses, enteroviruses, parainfluenza viruses, coronaviruses and human bocavirus play in pediatric pneumonia is insufficiently studied. We used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to study 9 virus groups, including 16 different viruses or viral strains, in 56 ambulatory children with radiologically confirmed community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The same tests were carried out on 474 apparently healthy control children of the same age and sex. The mean age of children with CAP was 6.5 years (SD 4.2). Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was found in 19.6 % of 56 cases and

N6-methyladenosine modification of a parvovirus-encoded small noncoding RNA facilitates viral DNA replication through recruiting Y-family DNA polymerases.

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is a human parvovirus that causes lower respiratory tract infections in young children. It contains a single-stranded (ss) DNA genome of ~5.5 kb that encodes a small noncoding RNA of 140 nucleotides known as bocavirus-encoded small RNA (BocaSR), in addition to viral proteins. Here, we determined the secondary structure of BocaSR in vivo by using DMS-MaPseq. Our findings reveal that BocaSR undergoes N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification at multiple sites, which is critical for viral DNA replication in both dividing HEK293 cells and nondividing cells of the human airway
