Perception Versus Actual Weight: Body Image Dissatisfaction as a Stronger Correlate of Anxiety and Depression than BMI Among Romanian Health Sciences Students.

Background: The high prevalence of anxiety and depression among young adults constitutes a significant public health concern, with body image identified as a key psychological factor. However, the interplay between subjective metrics (perceived body image) and objective measures (Body Mass Index) remains insufficiently explored within specific populations, such as health sciences students in Eastern Europe. Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 137 medical and nursing students from a Romanian university. Validated instruments were employed: the Hospital

Pornography use in sexual minority males: Associations with body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, thoughts about using anabolic steroids and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: We examined two hypotheses regarding the potential association of pornography use with body image-related and eating disorder-related psychopathology among sexual minority males (i.e. non-heterosexual males). Our primary hypothesis was that pornography use would be associated with males' body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, thoughts about using anabolic steroids and quality of life impairment; our secondary hypothesis was that the type of pornography, namely, professional versus amateur pornography, which contains idealised and non-idealised (i.e. regular) bodies, respect

A Longitudinal Examination of the Mediating Role of Body Dissatisfaction in the Relationship Between Pornography Use Frequency and Eating Disturbances: A Cross-Lagged Mediation Model.

Albeit a positive association between pornography use frequency (PUF) and body dissatisfaction has been identified, studies examining the link between PUF and disordered eating behavior (DEB) have been highly limited in scope (e.g., only focused on men) and have several limitations (e.g., lack of a longitudinal study design and small sample size). The present study aimed to address one of these gaps by examining the longitudinal associations between PUF and DEB, while considering the mediating role of body dissatisfaction over a 1-year period in a sample of young adults. We performed an autore

Body Dissatisfaction, Cognitive Distraction, and Sexual Satisfaction in a Sample of LGB+ People: A Mediation Study Framed by Cognitive Psychology Models of Sexual Response.

Introduction: Body dissatisfaction is a well-established risk factor for emotional problems and low levels of well-being indicators, such as sexual health. Cognitive models propose that dissatisfaction with one's body can cause cognitive distraction related to physical appearance during sexual activity. This may compromise sexual response, namely, sexual satisfaction in heterosexual cis women. However, this relationship has only been studied within heterosexual samples. The present study aims to test a mediation model using cognitive distraction related to body appearance during sexual activit

Internalization of muscularity and thinness ideals: Associations with body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, and muscle dysmorphic symptoms in at risk sexual minority men.

OBJECTIVE: In the tripartite influence model, appearance-ideal internalization is identified as a prominent risk factor for the development of body dissatisfaction and subsequent eating disorder (ED) behaviors. For men, prior research has emphasized the importance of both thin-ideal internalization and muscular-ideal internalization in explaining later ED behaviors and muscle dysmorphia (MD) symptoms. Previous research in heterosexual men has shown that the associations between muscular-ideal internalization and ED or MD symptoms may depend on whether the individual has also internalized the t

Disordered Eating and Body Dissatisfaction in Transgender and Gender-Expansive Adults: An Evaluation and Integration of the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience and Tripartite Influence Models.

Transgender and gender-expansive (TGE) people, including transgender and nonbinary individuals, experience elevated rates of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating compared to cisgender individuals, but little is known about why. To address this research gap, we compared the ability of TGE-specific factors as proposed in the gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) model, general psychological factors contained in the tripartite influence (TI) model, and an integration of these frameworks to explain body dissatisfaction and disordered eating among TGE individuals. Regression analyses w

Genetic and environmental associations between body dissatisfaction, weight preoccupation, and binge eating: Evidence for a common factor with differential loadings across symptom type.

OBJECTIVE: Prior twin studies provide support for a single "common factor" that contributes genetic and environmental risk to a range of disordered eating symptoms. However, the common factor may be indexed less well by binge eating (BE) than other symptoms of eating disorders [i.e., body dissatisfaction (BD) and weight preoccupation (WP)]. We sought to explore the presence of a common factor and test whether loadings differed across three key symptoms (i.e., BE, BD, WP). METHOD: Disordered eating was assessed via self-report in 631 female twin pairs from the Michigan State University Twin Re

Disentangling the effects of daily activity and sleep quality on psychological well-being among Chinese LGBTQ+ emerging adults: The moderating role of body dissatisfaction.

LGBTQ + young adults in China face elevated minority stress, making culturally sensitive strategies to enhance psychological well-being urgently needed. Health behaviors, such as physical activity and sleep quality, hold considerable promise in this domain. Despite growing evidence for the benefits of physical activity and sleep, their momentary impacts on psychological well-being remain untested among Chinese LGBTQ + emerging adults, particularly in real-world settings that require intensive longitudinal approaches. The present study investigated the effects of physical activity and sleep qua

Socio-demographic determinants, mediators and moderators of body image dissatisfaction and distortion in Black South African women aged 18 years and older: SANHANES-1.

BACKGROUND: Body image concerns are important as they negatively affect health and nutrition status. With rising obesity rates among Black South African women, understanding obesity from a socio‑behavioural perspective is imperative. Despite extensive work on obesity determinants, little is known about the causal pathways underlying body image dissatisfaction (BID) and body size distortion (BSD) in this population. This study provides the first causal‑pathway analysis of BID and BSD among Black South African women using nationally representative survey data. METHODS: We analysed nationally re

Effect of cognitive bias modification training on body image dissatisfaction in adolescents with anorexia nervosa or depression-a pilot feasibility randomized controlled crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Body image disturbance presents transdiagnostically with an impact on the development and maintenance of psychiatric disorders. Addressing body image disturbance, a cognitive bias modification training (CBM) was developed using a two-alternative forced choice task (2-AFC) to alter patients' individual perceptual boundary between what they classify as a fat versus a thin body. This pilot study aimed to evaluate, for the first time, the paradigm's feasibility and efficacy in adolescents in a clinical context. METHODS: This pilot study included adolescent inpatients aged 13-17 year

Considering J.Lo and Ugly Betty: a qualitative examination of risk factors and prevention targets for body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and obesity in young Latina women.

Latina women are vulnerable to poor body image, eating disorders, and obesity, particularly during the college years. This study sought to identify common cultural antecedents of these concerns in order to inform the development of prevention programs for this population. Six groups of university students who identified as Latina (N=27) discussed cultural aspects of body image, eating disorders, and obesity. Thematic analysis identified four main themes: (a) cultural disparities in body-ideal, including the influence of the media and acculturation issues; (b) messages about body shape and weig

Body Image Dissatisfaction Is Increased in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Compared to Healthy Matched Controls but Not Diseased Controls: A Case-Control Study from New Zealand.

Background: Body image dissatisfaction is elevated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as other chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to determine if the higher rate of body image dissatisfaction in IBD is specific to IBD or characteristic of chronic disease in general by comparing body image dissatisfaction in IBD patients with age- and gender-matched healthy individuals and those with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: In this New Zealand-based case-control study conducted in a secondary care hospital, consecutive IBD patients aged 16 years and older were matched 1:1 wit

Why do only a minority of men report severe levels of eating disorder symptomatology, when so many report substantial body dissatisfaction? Examination of exacerbating factors.

In recent years research employing female samples has indicated that although body dissatisfaction may be necessary for the onset of an eating disorder, it is not sufficient. This study examined body surveillance and difficulties in interpersonal domains (attachment anxiety and social anxiety) as potential moderators of the body dissatisfaction-eating disorder symptomatology relationship amongst Italian college men (N = 359). As expected, all examined variables were found to intensify this relationship such that body dissatisfaction was strongly related to men's eating disorder symptomatology

Anabolic steroid use among gay and bisexual men living in Australia and New Zealand: Associations with demographics, body dissatisfaction, eating disorder psychopathology, and quality of life.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gay and bisexual men may be at heightened risk for using anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). Few studies, however, have examined AAS use among gay and bisexual men living in countries outside the United States. In addition, few studies have explored the potential associations of AAS use with body image concerns beyond muscularity, including height and genitals, or with eating disorder symptoms and quality of life. Thus, we examined the associations of AAS use, and of thoughts about using AAS, with body image, eating disorder symptoms, and quality of life among gay and bise
