BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are characterized by fears of negative evaluation by others (related to one's own incompetence or flawed appearance, respectively). Previous research has shown that individuals with SAD and BDD exhibit difficulty identifying facial expressions and interpretive biases for threat in social situations. The current study aimed at further investigating social cognition in SAD, BDD, and mentally healthy controls (35 individuals per group, respectively). Further, 35 individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as a c

Our case report is on the use of electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) in an adolescent with Bipolar Disorder (BPD), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and comorbid Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). In our case, ECT was not considered at the first stage, but we encountered medication noncompliance and treatment resistance. Symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder completely disappeared after ECT, which is consistent with the literature. ECT is a treatment with a low side effect profile in treatment-resistant cases. In addition, it will be useful to increase the knowledge and experience of clinicians on ECT an

The aim of this study is comparing directly the BDD and OCD disorders in terms of similarities and differences in memory function for the first time. 19 BDD patients, 15 OCD patients and 26 individuals in a healthy control group were recruited from three hospitals in Tehran. They were administered the following subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale: logical memory (immediate and delayed), verbal paired association (immediate and delayed), digit span and spatial span as well as the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test (RCFT). The results showed that BDD and OCD groups had lower performance in com

OBJECTIVE: Current nosology conceptualises body dysmorphic disorder as being related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, but the direct evidence to support this conceptualisation is mixed. In this systematic review, we aimed to provide an integrated overview of research that has directly compared body dysmorphic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
METHOD: The PubMed database was searched for empirical studies which had directly compared body dysmorphic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder groups across any subject matter. Of 379 records, 31 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an impairing and relatively common disorder that has high comorbidity with certain Axis I disorders. However, the longitudinal associations between BDD and comorbid disorders have not previously been examined. Such information may shed light on the nature of BDD's relationship to putative "near-neighbor" disorders, such as major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social phobia. This study examined time-varying associations between BDD and these comorbid disorders in 161 participants over 1-3 years of follow-up in the first prospective longitu

This study aimed to translate the Body Image Questionnaire-Child and Adolescent Version (BIQ-C) and the Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI) into Turkish and evaluate their psychometric properties in adolescents and young adults. A total of 192 participants aged 11-20 years were recruited from child and adolescent psychiatry and dermatology clinics. After a forward-backward translation procedure, participants completed the BIQ-C, AAI, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for BDD (BDD-YBOCS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and PedsQL.Exploratory factor analysis supported a three-factor st

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an increased self-perception of one's own appearance and an intense aspiration for beauty, which may elevate the likelihood of being easily suggestible, cause mental suffering, and impair ego functions. This study investigated the direct and indirect impacts of suggestibility and psychic pain on symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) through the mediating role of defense mechanisms. The study encompassed 150 BDD patients chosen through purposive sampling in a cross-sectional design. The data were collected using the Stanford Hypnotic Susce

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is severe and undertreated. Digital mental health could be key to expanding access to evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy for BDD (CBT-BDD). Coach guidance is posited to be essential for effective uptake of digital interventions. However, little is known about how different patients may use coaching, what patterns correspond to meaningful outcomes, and how to match coaching to patient needs.
METHODS: Participants were 77 adults who received a 12-week guided smartphone CBT-BDD. Bachelor's-level coaches were available via as

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is thought to be associated with considerable suicide risk. This nationwide cohort study quantified the risks of intentional self-harm-including nonsuicidal self-injuries and suicide attempts-and death by suicide in BDD.
METHODS: Individuals with a validated ICD-10 diagnosis of BDD in the Swedish National Patient Register, registered between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2020, were matched with 10 unexposed individuals (i.e., without BDD) from the general population on birth year, sex, and county of residence. We describe a patient with Schizophrenia and secondary enuresis. The enuresis settled with resolution of his psychotic symptoms but later remerged after starting Clozapine. We explore the mechanisms of incontinence in Schizophrenia and those due to Clozapine. This case highlights the need to inquire about incontinence in patients with schizophrenia prior to prescribing clozapine.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a prevalent and often disabling condition with onset typically occurring during adolescence. To date, little is known about the presentation or treatment of BDD in autistic youth. Using data from two specialist clinics, the current study compared the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of autistic (n = 62) and non-autistic (n = 240) youth with BDD. The groups showed broadly similar clinical presentations, with several notable differences. Autistic youth reported fewer areas of appearance concern and were less likely to engage in appearance-based so

BACKGROUND: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is characterized by recurrent thoughts related to one or more perceived defects in physical appearance, which are either nonexistent or minimal to others, leading to emotional distress and impairments in social, occupational, and emotional functioning. The prevalence of BDD among individuals seeking plastic surgery is significantly higher than in the general population. It is therefore essential for plastic surgeons to identify individuals at greater risk for BDD. Several questionnaires are available for this purpose, typically administered by mental

Family accommodation (FA) is widely-recognised as an important clinical phenomenon in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders, and is related to poorer treatment outcomes. However, FA has not been quantitatively explored in Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The aim of this study was to investigate the patterns and correlates of maternal accommodation in adolescent BDD, and its association with treatment outcomes. Participants were 131 adolescents with BDD and their mothers who completed the Family Accommodation Scale-Parent Report (FAS-PR) as part of routine clinical practice i

Increasing empirical attention has been given to the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the development and maintenance of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Yet, current research has predominantly focused on adult and nonclinical BDD samples, and little is known about relevance of ACEs in adolescent BDD. The present study examined (a) the frequency of ACEs in adolescents with a primary diagnosis of BDD (n = 50) versus obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (n = 50) and (b) the clinical profile of ACE-exposed youth with BDD. ACEs were ascertained through a systematic search of electroni

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) typically originates in adolescence and is associated with considerable adversity. Evidence-based treatments exist but research on clinical outcomes in naturalistic settings is extremely scarce. We evaluated the short- and long-term outcomes of a large cohort of adolescents with BDD receiving specialist multimodal treatment and examined predictors of symptom improvement. We followed 140 young people (age range 10-18) with a diagnosis of BDD treated at two national and specialist outpatient clinics in Stockholm, Sweden (n = 96) and London, England (n = 44), betwee

OBJECTIVES: A retrospective naturalistic case note study to determine the frequency, co-morbidity and treatment-response of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
METHODS: Records from 280 patients attending a highly specialised obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)/BDD service were analysed. The clinical outcome was measured either through scoring of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) for OCD/BDD, or textual analysis of case notes for evidence of symptomatic improvement, treatment tolerability, and premature disengagement.
RESULTS: A total of 32 patients (11.43%) were diagnosed with
