Early Dynamics of Body Temperature in Acute Stroke: Insights into Outcomes and Management.

Background: Following a stroke, body and brain temperatures are closely linked. Elevated temperature may reflect the severity of brain injury rather than infection. The significance of admission temperature remains unclear, and hypothermia treatment lacks proven efficacy and safety. Administering paracetamol (acetaminophen) above 36.5 °C is considered safe, though its clinical benefit is modest. This study aimed to examine how admission temperature, peak temperature in the first 24 h, and temperature fluctuations affect three-month functional outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective stu

The circadian rhythm of human body temperature - Clinical implications and review of the literature.

Human body temperature remains an essential vital sign that had been used to judge our health given its strong correlation with human disease. Body temperature is also a manifestation of our circadian rhythm, with a predictable rise during the day peaking in the evenings and steady decrease during the night reaching a minimum around the time of awakening. Yet, the rhythm is believed to be endogenous and to exist independently of any external stimuli, including day light. Human illnesses such as infections, autoimmune conditions, and cancer had been associated with a disruption in the circadian

The back body temperatures of patients with idiopathic scoliosis measured through exercise.

BACKGROUND: Aerobic exercise is closely associated with the vital functions of patients with scoliosis. Infrared thermography (IRT) has been increasingly applied in physiological measurements in recent years. OBJECTIVE: This observational study aimed to use IRT to examine the back body surface temperatures of patients with idiopathic scoliosis during aerobic exercise. METHODS: Forty-two participants who completed a pre-test were divided into a scoliotic group and a non-scoliotic group. Both groups completed a 30-minute cycling exercise, during which their back body temperature was measured u

Peripheral body temperature rhythm as a marker of the severity of depression symptoms in fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Circadian rhythm alterations have been reported in fibromyalgia (FM) and depression. Peripheral body temperature (PBT) is a reliable measure of the circadian system, so we compared the PBT rhythm between persons with FM and controls. We evaluated PBT correlation with depression symptoms and pain severity in women with FM. METHODS: We included 101 women aged 30-65 with FM diagnosis (FM group, n = 83) and controls (n = 18). Twenty-four-hour PBT was assessed by actigraphy. For the analysis, in the FM group, the PBT measurement was divided into four periods: morning (6 a.m.-noon), aft

Exacerbation of circadian rhythms of core body temperature and sepsis in trauma patients.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe by mathematical modeling an accurate course of core body temperature (CBT) in severe trauma patients and its relation to sepsis. METHODS: In a cohort of severe trauma, the CBT measurements were collected for 24 h on day 2 after admission and rhythmicity assessed by Fourier transform and Cosinor analysis to describe circadian features (frequency and amplitude). CBT was compared between patients who developed sepsis or not during the early ICU stay. RESULTS: 33 patients were included in this analysis. 24 patients (73%) had a predominant rhythm of 24 h (per

The effects of sodium oxybate on core body and skin temperature regulation in narcolepsy.

Patients suffering from narcolepsy type 1 show altered skin temperatures, resembling the profile that is related to sleep onset in healthy controls. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of sodium oxybate, a widely used drug to treat narcolepsy, on the 24-h profiles of temperature and sleep-wakefulness in patients with narcolepsy and controls. Eight hypocretin-deficient male narcolepsy type 1 patients and eight healthy matched controls underwent temperature measurement of core body and proximal and distal skin twice, and the sleep-wake state for 24 h. After the baseline as

Core and body surface temperatures of nesting leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea).

Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are the largest species of marine turtle and the fourth most massive extant reptile. In temperate waters they maintain body temperatures higher than surrounding seawater through a combination of insulation, physiological, and behavioural adaptations. Nesting involves physical activity in addition to contact with warm sand and air, potentially presenting thermal challenges in the absence of the cooling effect of water, and data are lacking with which to understand their nesting thermal biology. Using non-contact methods (thermal imaging and infrared th

Development of pressure-sensitive dosage forms with a core liquefying at body temperature.

Pressure-sensitive dosage forms have been developed that are intended for pulsatile delivery of drugs to the proximal small intestine. The novel dosage forms are composed of insoluble shell and either a hard fat W32 or polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000 core that are both liquidizing at body temperature. The release is triggered by predominant pressure waves such as contractions of the pylorus causing rupture of the shell and an immediate emptying of the liquefied filling containing the active ingredient. In consequence immediately after the trigger has been effective the total amount of the drug

Influence of body temperature on the development of fatigue during prolonged exercise in the heat.

We investigated whether fatigue during prolonged exercise in uncompensable hot environments occurred at the same critical level of hyperthermia when the initial value and the rate of increase in body temperature are altered. To examine the effect of initial body temperature [esophageal temperature (Tes) = 35.9 +/- 0.2, 37.4 +/- 0. 1, or 38.2 +/- 0.1 (SE) degrees C induced by 30 min of water immersion], seven cyclists (maximal O2 uptake = 5.1 +/- 0.1 l/min) performed three randomly assigned bouts of cycle ergometer exercise (60% maximal O2 uptake) in the heat (40 degrees C) until volitional exh

Body temperature regulation in the newborn infant: interaction with sleep and clinical implications.

Thermoregulation in newborn infant differs from that of adult. Comparisons between sleep stages show that, during rapid eye movements (REM) sleep, the impairment of thermoregulatory responses in adult is not observed in newborn. Both behavioral and autonomic temperature regulations are always operative in the range of air temperatures usually imposed. The interaction between sleep and thermoregulation seems to be less important in newborns than in adults, suggesting that sleep processes are well protected, reducing the probability of occurrence of central dysfunction. According to the model de

The application of intrascrotal deep body temperature measurement for the noninvasive diagnosis of varicoceles.

The authors used intrascrotal deep body (intratesticular) temperature measurement in an attempt to make the diagnosis of varicoceles more objective. Two hundred five male patients complaining of infertility were classified into three groups: group A consisted of 84 patients with varicocele; group B of 66 patients without varicocele; and group C of 55 patients after varicocelectomy. The bilateral intrascrotal temperatures were recorded in the supine position and then monitored continuously in the standing position. The maximum temperatures in both positions were compared between each group. The

Changes in body temperature of rats acclimated to heat with different acclimation schedules.

Male Wistar rats, initially maintained at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 23.8 degrees C, were subjected to one of seven different heat acclimation schedules under a 12:12-h light-dark cycle (lights on at 0600 h). Two groups of rats were exposed to Ta of 32.4 degrees C all day for 5 (HC5) or 10 (HC10) days. The other four groups were exposed to Ta of 32.8 degrees C for 5 h/day during the last half of the dark phase for 5 (NI5) or 10 (NI10) consecutive days or during the last half of the light phase for 5 (DI5) or 10 (DI10) consecutive days. Control rats (C) were kept at 23.8 degrees C throughou

Interaction of two barbiturates and an antihistamine on body temperature and motor performance of mice.

As an example for a drug combination used as a sedative (Vesparax) the actions of secobarbital (S), brallobarbital (B) and the antihistamine etodroxizine (E) were studied in mice after single and concomitant oral application. S and B caused a dose-dependent increase of exploratory locomotor performance enclosing a short period of locomotor depression. Such excitatory effect was suppressed by concomitant application. E produced a decrease in locomotion and--when added to S and B--enhanced their sedative effects. Explorative rearing was suppressed by low doses of S and B, by B, by E, and by all

Regulation of body temperature and nociception induced by non-noxious stress in rat.

The effects of 3 different non-noxious stressors on body temperature (Tb) were investigated in the rat: (1) loose restraint in cylinders, (2) removal of the rats from cylinders, exposure to a novel environment and replacement in cylinders, a stressor called here 'novelty', and (3) gentle holding of the rats by the nape of the neck. Loose restraint and 'novelty' produced hyperthermia. On the contrary, holding induced hypothermia. Hypophysectomy (HX) reduced basal Tb, abolished restraint hyperthermia and reduced both 'novelty' hyperthermia and holding hypothermia. Dexamethasone ( DEXA ) had no e

Temperature changes of the hypothalamus and body core in ducks feeding in cold water.

Hypothalamic (Thy), spinal(Tsc) and colonic (Tc) temperatures were measured in Pekin ducks spontaneously dabbling for food in cold water (5 degrees C). In agreement with observations in the pigeon and the fowl Thy was found to be consistently lower by about 0.5 degrees C than the other core temperatures. The drop of Thy during dipping head and neck into the cold water was not substantially greater than that of Tsc, while both changed more than Tc. The measurements do not support the assumption that the hypothalamic region in the duck is exposed to substantially greater temperature fluctuations
