BACKGROUND: Long-term application of an external fixator to treat leg-length discrepancy and short stature often causes complications, such as pin-tract infection or loss of range of motion at the knee or ankle (or both). Prolonged fixator use also interferes with the activities of daily living. To minimize such problems, we have combined intramedullary nailing with external fixation. 12 hands with congenital short finger in 11 patients were treated with various types of metacarpal bone lengthening. These included three patients with brachydactyly, seven with transverse deficiency, and one with constriction ring syndrome. BACKGROUND: Congenital femoral deficiency (CFD) is a rare condition, often associated with other skeletal anomalies that make the management more difficult. This study aimed to present the risk factors associated with complications in reconstruction of CFD.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study on patients with CFD who underwent femoral reconstruction between 2002 and 2022, from a single center. The preoperative demographic data, lengthening characteristics, complications, and the predisposing conditions were documented.

The purpose of this study was to assess growth patterns after lengthening of the congenitally short femur or tibia in children younger than 6 years. The length of the stump and the quality of the soft tissue coverage are important for prosthesis fitting and mobility. In a high traumatic femoral amputation soft tissue reconstruction with a free musculocutaneous latissimus dorsi (LD) flap was performed to preserve bone length and provide proper tissue coverage. The extremely short stump was later on lengthened using a motorized intramedullary nail (Fitbone), and the achieved bone-lengthening was 14 cm. With the combined modalities of an LD-flap and Fitbone lengthening of the stump, the patient now has a useful limb function.
