Cystic echinococcosis in Mundari tribe-members of South Sudan.

Many neglected tropical diseases, including the zoonotic disease cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis), are endemic to East Africa. However, their geographical distribution is heterogenous and incompletely characterized. The aim of this study was to determine if Mundari pastoralists harbor endemic human hydatidosis. The survey was conducted in cattle camps randomly selected from accessible sites provided by officials in Terekeka, South Sudan. Following informed consent, a questionnaire collected demographic data and hydatid exposure risk. A systematic sonographic abdominal exam was performed usi

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from various clinical specimens at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: K. pneumoniae become multidrug-resistant (MDR) and commonly poses a serious health threat to patients due to limited therapeutic options. As a result, determining the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of K. pneumoniae isolates from clinical specimens is substantial to patient diagnosis and treatment. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2021 to July 2022 at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. Sociodemographic and laboratory data were collected from registered books using

Claude Bernard's route to the isolation of glycogen: the journey that changed scientific views on the physiological role of the liver and animal metabolism.

Claude Bernard (1813-1878) studied medicine in Paris from 1834 to 1843. During his studies, he attended the physiology lectures at Collège de France provided by François Magendie (1783-1855). Magendie was the world's leading experimental physiologist, and Bernard became his assistant in 1841. Bernard's training in vivisection, anatomy and physiology was the foundation for his success as an experimental physiologist. Bernard's first years of independent research were not successful, but his dexterity in vivisection allowed him to collect pancreatic juice from living dogs in 1848. With fresh pan

Cienciometric Analysis of Scientific Production on Hydatidosis/Echinococcosis in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidosis/cystic echinococcosis (CE) is considered a neglected disease due to its preventive nature and impact on low-income populations. In Latin America, there is a high incidence, and in the high Andean regions, it is considered an endemic disease. The objective of this study was to quantify and analyze the scientific production of hydatidosis/echinococcosis through a bibliometric analysis in Latin America up to 2022. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis study was conducted based on the scientific production of CE in the SCOPUS database until 2022 in Latin American countries. I

Dopamine dysregulation syndrome: implications for a dopamine hypothesis of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Rational therapeutic development in bipolar is hampered by a lack of pathophysiological model. However, there is a wealth of converging data on the role of dopamine in bipolar disorder. This paper therefore examines the possibility of a dopamine hypothesis for bipolar disorder. METHOD: A literature search was conducted using standard search engines Embase, PyschLIT, PubMed and MEDLINE. In addition, papers and book chapters known to the authors were retrieved and examined for further relevant articles. RESULTS: Collectively, in excess of 100 articles were reviewed from which approx

Everest nails: a prospective study on the incidence of Beau's lines after time spent at high altitude.

Beau's lines are transverse grooves seen in the nails that appear after a period of disruption in nail matrix formation. The fall in atmospheric pressure at high altitude causes hypobaric hypoxia in individuals spending time at high altitude, which may result in disruption of nail matrix formation and the appearance of Beau's lines. Members of an expedition to a research base camp at 5000 m in the Nepal Himalayas were contacted 4 and 8 weeks after returning to low altitude to report on the appearance of new transverse grooves in their nails. During the expedition, data on altitude, acute mount

The cognitive behavioural model for eating disorders: a direct evaluation in children and adolescents with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive behavioural model of bulimia nervosa [Fairburn, C.G., Cooper, Z., & Cooper, P.J. (1986). The clinical features and maintenance of bulimia nervosa. In K.D. Brownell, and J.P. Foreyt (Eds.), Handbook of eating disorders: physiology, psychology and treatment of obesity, anorexia and bulimia (pp. 389-404). For a long time it was assumed that the model can also be used to understand the mechanism of binge eating among obese individuals. The present study aimed to t

Tele-healthcare in migraine medicine: from diagnosis to monitoring treatment outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Primary headaches represent a huge cost in terms of decreased productivity and migraine occupies the first position among disabilities in working population. Migraine has a high incidence, disproportionate to the available primary care centers. In most cases, migraine can be managed through the simple and accurate collection of clinical history, which makes it an ideal candidate for tele-healthcare. AREAS COVERED: In this narrative review, we retrace the most important scientific evidence regarding use of tele-healthcare in headache medicine. Over the last few years, it has prov

[Therapy based on positive self-defining memories for older women with depressive disorder and associated ruminations: A pilot study].

Depressive disorders overthrow the recovery of positive memories, this mechanism being strategically used by healthy subjects to cope with negative feelings. An adjustment to this strategy to deal with depression affecting elderly women showing ruminative responses could be obtained through the materialization of a number of positive self-defining memories. This innovative cognitive therapeutic method should allow a decrease in the rumination rate and an improvement of depressive disorders for aging women. Our study, including 14 depressed women over 65 years old showing ruminative responses,

Prostitutes and criminals: beginnings of eugenics in Croatia in the works of Fran Gundrum from Oriovac (1856-1919).

Fran Gundrum (1856-1919) was a Croatian physician, encyclopedist, and an advocate of medical enlightenment and healthy lifestyle. In order to identify and analyze Gundrum's ideas about the problems of prostitution and criminality, we studied all of his books, booklets, and articles published between 1905 and 1914. We showed that Gundrum's theories of heredity, morality, and sexual hygiene incorporated many of the important discussions of his time, especially those related to the Darwinian paradigm. Gundrum's project of collecting statistics on prostitutes was the first such study published on
