Concussions, cuts and cracked bones: A systematic literature review on protective headgear and head injury prevention in Olympic boxing.

In 2013, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) prohibited the use of headguards for elite male Olympic boxing competitions. Could the removal of the headguard from elite male boxing competitions potentially cause increased injury risk for boxers? The aim of the literature review is to analyse current knowledge about the use of protective headgear and injury prevention in boxing, in order to determine if there are increased injury risks associated with headguard use. Peer-reviewed studies (language: English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Dutch) published from 1980 and onwards were consid

Drug Repositioning for Multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from Pandemic Response Box and Global Health Priority Box of MMV.

The phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can occur naturally through spontaneous mutation without major damage; however, the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials is responsible for millions of deaths annually. The development of new drugs is an expensive and slow process, while repositioning active substances to different biological activities is a cheaper and faster option. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of repositioning 640 known chemical compounds provided by the Medicines for Malaria Venture organization for antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against mu

PREVALENCE OF BOX TURTLE ADENOVIRUS IN EASTERN BOX TURTLES (TERRAPENE CAROLINA CAROLINA) PRESENTED TO A WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER IN VIRGINIA, USA.

Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) are a native North American species with a declining population trend that may be attributable to habitat fragmentation, vehicle collisions, and disease. Adenoviral infections can cause significant morbidity and mortality in captive reptile populations. Adenoviruses have been documented in box turtles, but their occurrence and impact in wild populations are unknown. A disease survey was performed at The Wildlife Center of Virginia, USA, to assess the prevalence of box turtle adenovirus (BTAdV) in wild eastern box turtles and evaluate potential

"I don't like fitting a box, except the box I am": genderqueer and nonbinary (GQNB) patient strategies for navigating healthcare.

BACKGROUND: While genderqueer and nonbinary (GQNB) people comprise a significant percentage of the transgender community, very little research has explored the unique experiences and needs of GQNB patients. A critical challenge faced by GQNB patients is the degree to which health systems operate inside of a gender binary-as evidenced by the design of health technologies, organizational policies, and culture. Understanding how GQNB patients navigate health systems as they currently exist may give us insight into how to improve the design of those systems. This study aimed to identify GQNB patie

A novel F-box protein CaF-box is involved in responses to plant hormones and abiotic stress in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.).

The F-box protein family is characterized by an F-box motif that has been shown to play an important role in regulating various developmental processes and stress responses. In this study, a novel F-box-containing gene was isolated from leaves of pepper cultivar P70 (Capsicum annuum L.) and designated CaF-box. The full-length cDNA is 2088 bp and contains an open reading frame of 1914 bp encoding a putative polypeptide of 638 amino acids with a mass of 67.8 kDa. CaF-box was expressed predominantly in stems and seeds, and the transcript was markedly upregulated in response to cold stress, abscis

Effect of Boxing Exercises on the Functional Ability and Quality of Life of Individuals with Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra and characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Boxing is a type of complementary therapy to improve symptoms in PD. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of boxing training on the functionality and quality of life of patients with PD. The literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, PEDro, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar search engines. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. Disrupted Functional Brain Network Architecture in Sufferers with Boxing-Related Repeated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Resting-State EEG Study.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) often occurs in individuals engaged in contact sports, particularly boxing. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of rmTBI on phase-locking value (PLV)-based graph theory and functional network architecture in individuals with boxing-related injuries in five frequency bands by employing resting-state electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS: Twenty-fore professional boxers and 25 matched healthy controls were recruited to perform a resting-state task, and their noninvasive scalp EEG data were collected simultaneously. Autism-associated substitutions at ASN374 disrupt forkhead box P2-mediated regulation of DNA binding by t-box brain protein 1.

TBR1 is a neurodevelopmental transcription factor whose function depends on the coordinated integration of DNA binding with regulatory protein-protein interactions. Despite physiological links between TBR1 and other transcription factors, the biochemical mechanisms that couple DNA binding to partner-mediated regulation, and how these processes are disrupted by disease-associated variants, remain poorly defined. Here we provide the first direct biochemical evidence that the FOXP2 forkhead domain (FHD) binds the TBR1 T-box domain and we show that this interaction is modulated by residue Asn374.

Exploring the association between loot boxes and problem gambling: Are video gamers referring to loot boxes when they complete gambling screening tools?

Concerns regarding the similarities between video game 'loot boxes' and gambling have been supported by correlations in survey studies between loot box engagement and problem gambling scores. It is generally noted that this correlation could reflect loot box users migrating to conventional gambling, and/or people with gambling problems being attracted to loot boxes when they play video games. We describe a third possibility, that when gamers complete problem gambling screens they may be referring to harms incurred from their loot box use. Using three secondary datasets from cross-sectional onl

Forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) and paired box gene 3 (PAX3) overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in patients with cervical cancer.

PURPOSE: Forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) and paired box gene 3 (PAX3) have been reported to play an imported role in human cancers, but their role in cervical cancer has not yet been clarified. In this study, we evaluated the functional role of FOXO1 in cervical cancer cells and investigated the expression and clinical significance of FOXO1 and PAX3 in cervical lesions. METHODS: In vitro assessment of cell function by cell viability, migration, and invasion assays were performed on FOXO1-knockdown cervical cancer cells. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining analyses of FOXO1 and PAX3 were perfor

Expression and clinical relevance of paired box protein 7 and sex determining region Y-box 2 in canine corticotroph pituitary adenomas.

Pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism is a common endocrinopathy in dogs, caused by an adrenocorticotrophic hormone secreting pituitary tumour of the anterior or intermediate lobe. The prognosis of intermediate lobe adenomas is worse than that of anterior lobe adenomas, indicating the possible usefulness of melanotropic markers as prognosticators. Another possible origin of pituitary adenomas is found in cancer stem cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of melanotroph specific transcription factor paired box protein 7 (Pax7) and stem cell marker and reprogramming

Genetic Pathogenesis and Treatment of Forkhead Box A2 Hyperinsulinemia.

Congenital hyperinsulinemia (CHI) is a clinically heterogeneous disorder that is the leading cause of persistent and recurrent hypoglycemia in infancy and childhood. There are 39 pathogenic genes associated with CHI. The forkhead box A2 (FOXA2) gene variants that induce forkhead box A2 hyperinsulinemia (FOXA2-HI) are extremely rare. This review describes the genetic pathogenesis and treatment progress of FOXA2-HI to improve clinicians' understanding of the disease.

Exploring Pandora's box: a review of thoracic compartment syndrome.

Compartment syndrome (CS) arises from increased pressure within a confined space, compromising organ function due to reduced blood flow and subsequent tissue hypo-xia and ischemia. Thoracic compartment syndrome (TCS), a subset of CS, occurs in diverse surgical and medical conditions, particularly cardiac surgery, chest trauma, and critical care scenarios, significantly contributing to morbidity and mortality. However, the absence of a standardized definition hinders timely diagnosis and treatment. This study systematically explores the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and causes of TCS,

BoxCell: Leveraging SAM for Cell Segmentation with Box Supervision.

Cell segmentation in histopathological images is vital for diagnosis, and treatment of several diseases. Annotating data is tedious, and requires medical expertise, making it difficult to employ supervised learning. Instead, we study a weakly supervised setting, where only bounding box supervision is available, and present the use of Segment Anything (SAM) for this without any finetuning, i.e., directly utilizing the pre-trained model. We propose BoxCell, a cell segmentation framework that utilizes SAM's capability to interpret bounding boxes as prompts, both at train and test times. At train
