[Clinical and neuroradiological studies of eclampsia--cerebral vasospasm and relation to the brain edema].

Clinical and neuroradiological studies involving cerebral angiography were conducted in four patients with eclampsia. In three cases (case 1, 2 and 4), neurological focal signs, abnormal low density areas on cranial CT and T2 high intensity areas on cranial MRI disappeared within a month. But in one case (case 3), cerebral infarction occurred and right hemiparesis and aphasia persisted. Cerebral angiography in the acute phase demonstrated vasospasm in all cases and arterial occlusion in the middle cerebral artery due to vasospasm in case 3. Angiography demonstrated several types of spasms, inc

[A pharmacological analysis of the role of GABA- and opioidergic systems in the development of brain edema].

Opioid receptors blocker naloxone potentiated edematous effect of GABA-receptors blockers in experiments on rats. In combination with bicuculline and picrotoxine that agent leads to increased content of water in the brain and decreased brain tissue density. At the same time naloxone prevented GABA-antagonists activation of oxidative processes in brain mitochondria.

Is Ca2+ -activated potassium efflux involved in the formation of ischemic brain edema?

A possible role of Ca2+ -activated potassium efflux in brain ischemia was studied using a rat focal cortical infarction model. Three days after ischemic insult, tissue contents of water, sodium, potassium and calcium ions were measured. Charybdotoxin, a specific inhibitor of Ca2+ -activated potassium efflux, was found to reduce the formation of ischemic brain edema when a dosage of 0.15 mg/kg was given by i.v. 20-30 min prior to the onset of ischemic insult.

Aquaporin-4 is a potential drug target for traumatic brain injury via aggravating the severity of brain edema.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain edema (TBE) is caused by a specific water channel mediated by membrane aquaporins. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) plays an especially important role in this process, but the relationship between AQP4 and TBE remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore expression of AQP4 in the hippocampus after traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as the effect of brain edema on skeletal protein and its function in hippocampal neurons. METHODS: The adult male Wistar rats we divided into a sham group and a TBI group, the latter of which was further divided into 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 an

Significance of Primary Tumor Location and Histology for Brain Metastasis Development and Peritumoral Brain Edema in Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastasis of lung cancer adversely affects overall survival (OS) and quality of life, while peritumoral brain edema is responsible for life-threatening complications. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological and cerebral radiological data of 575 consecutive lung cancer patients with brain metastases. RESULTS: In adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, peritumoral brain edema was more pronounced than in small-cell lung cancer (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). There was a positive correlation between the size of metastasis and the thickness of

Dynamic correlation between brain edema scores and blood-brain barrier permeability predicts the outcome of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral edema and disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are common consequences of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and can be visualized by CT. This study investigated the dynamic correlation between the Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Early Brain Edema Score (SEBES) and BBB permeability (BBBP) between admission and during the delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) time window (DCITW) in patients with aSAH. METHODS: We investigated 129 patients with aSAH who underwent CT perfusion imaging on admission and during DCITW. The correlations between SEBES and BBBP (measured by Ktrans)

Acute administration of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine induces profound hyperthermia, blood-brain barrier disruption, brain edema formation, and cell injury.

The psychostimulant 3,4-,ethylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy") is known to induce hyperthermia and alterations in neurochemical metabolism in the CNS. However, the detailed cellular or molecular mechanisms behind MDMA-induced neurotoxicity are still not well known. Since MDMA induces profound hyperthermia that could lead to intense cellular stress and cause disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), this investigation examined the effects of acute MDMA on BBB dysfunction, brain edema, and cell injury in rats and mice. When MDMA (40 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered to rats or mice, thes

Cerebral edema and brain death following intravenous N-acetylcysteine overdose: a case report.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) infusions are rarely associated with cerebral edema. We present a patient that received 1242.2 mg/kg intravenous NAC over 8.3 h who developed seizures, cerebral edema, and died. A 17-24-year-old female (48.3 kg) presented after an acute acetaminophen ingestion. Their initial presumed 5 h acetaminophen concentration was 591.7 μmol/L. Initial alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were 16 and 21 IU/L, respectively. Due to inconsistencies in the time of ingestion, IV NAC was initiated as a two-step protocol of 150 mg/kg over 1 h followed by 15 m

Concordance between focal brain temperature elevations and focal edema in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroinflammation (NI) is a pathophysiological factor in many neurological disorders, including epilepsy. Because NI causes microstructural tissue damage that worsens with increasing brain temperature, abnormally elevated brain temperatures may be a surrogate measure of the biochemical consequences of NI. This study investigated whether patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have abnormal brain temperature elevations (TCRE ) in seizure-producing regions that show evidence of edema and/or microstructural damage. METHODS: Twenty adults with TLE and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were

First Case of MELAS Syndrome Presenting with Local Brain Edema Requiring Decompressive Craniectomy.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and recurrent stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a rare but one of the most common maternally inherited multisystem disorder. Although patients with MELAS present a variable clinical profile, strokelike lesions have been detected in 90% of cases, with stroke being the first presenting symptom in 25% of cases. However, cases of local brain edema requiring decompressive craniectomy has not been reported. A 12-year-old male patient was admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit with altered mental status, seizures, and vision loss. The pa

Acute cerebellar edema after traumatic brain injury in a child. a case report.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Malignant cerebral edema is described to occur more often in children than in adults. Its infratentorial analogous, a malignant cerebellar edema, has not been reported yet. A 10-year-old boy fell from a height of 3 m where he sustained a TBI. Approximately 36 h after trauma, a significant drop in Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) occurred accompanied by bilateral fixed and dilated pupils. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an underlying acute cerebellar edema without evidence of a sinus vein thrombosis or cer

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells stereotactic transplantation alleviate brain edema from intracerebral hemorrhage.

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSCs) exhibited high potential in tissue repair and regeneration, and it has been proved that ADSCs could protect brain cells from apoptosis and maintaining blood-brain barrier stability after cerebral vascular disease. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential and mechanism of ADSCs stereotactic transplantation in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) mice model and hemin-treated astrocytes. Mice were divided into three groups: sham group, ICH + PBS group, and ICH + ADSC group. Mice in ICH + ADSC group received ADSCs cell suspension stereotacti

Delayed enlargement of brain edema after resection of intracranial meningioma: two case reports.

Two patients underwent uneventful total removal of convexity or trigone meningioma, but subsequently edema enlarged causing symptoms 3-4 weeks later. Gradual improvement was obtained by steroid administration in 1 patient and re-craniotomy in 1 patient. The histological findings in Case 1 were not confirmed, but inflammatory reaction against residual microfibrillar collagen hemostat (MCH) may have developed. The specimen from around the cyst in Case 2 showed moderate staining for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF secreted by the tumor might have resulted in spread of inflammation
