Primary cardiac angiosarcoma presenting with haemoptysis.

A male patient in his 30s presented to the emergency room with a 1-week history of dyspnoea that progressed to haemoptysis, having coughed up approximately 200 mL of blood on two occasions. On diagnostic investigation, a mediastinal tumour infiltrating the free wall of the right atrium and multiple pulmonary nodules were discovered. The first suspicion was a neoplasm of pulmonary origin, and a bronchoscopy was performed, histology reported a probable cardiac origin for the neoplasm. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the presence of a primary cardiac angiosarcoma. An extension CT scan revealed brai

Specificity of computed tomography in the diagnosis of supratentorial neoplasms. Consideration of metastases and meningiomas.

A previously unsuspected linear relationship between the initial density and the amount of uptake of various tumors is described. As a rule, initially radiodense neoplasms enhance less than radiolucent neoplasms. For a given amount of enhancement, meningiomas are initially more radiodense than metastases; also, breast metastases are more radiodense than lung metastases. The density versus uptake curve tends to show certain specificity for a given type of neoplasm. Absolute differentiation of histologic types is still not possible on the basis of these curves. The correlation, however, is inter

Leptomeningeal infiltration in esthesioneuroblastoma: report of two cases with poor prognosis.

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare neoplasm of neuroectodermal origin, arising from the olfactory epithelium in the roof of the nasal cavity. Extension to the brain can occur less frequently than local recurrence, but leptomeningeal metastases without brain involvement have rarely been mentioned. We report 2 cases with poor prognosis of leptomeningeal infiltration during the evolution of esthesioneuroblastoma.

Radiation-induced osteosarcoma 16 years after surgery and radiation for glioma--case report.

A 35-year-old man developed osteosarcoma of the left parietal and occipital bones 16 years after radiotherapy for glioma in the right occipital lobe. Radiotherapy of the primary neoplasm used 50 Gy administered to a localized field through two lateral ports. The secondary neoplasm arose contralateral to the primary lesion but within the irradiated field. The tumor had a multilocular cyst with considerable intracranial extension, and symptoms of elevated intracranial pressure were prominent early in the course. After a short-lived initial remission following surgical intervention and chemothera

Therapeutic strategies for catatonia in paraneoplastic encephalitis.

This report is about a 40-year-old man suffering from fluctuating catatonia as main symptom of long-lasting paraneoplastic encephalitis caused by a testicular neoplasm. With recurrence of a neoplasm initially diagnosed as seminoma after a 7-year symptom-free interval the patient suddenly developed various neurological and psychopathological symptoms including seizures, autonomic dysregulation, continuous anterograde short-term amnesia and predominantly a long-lasting complex catatonic syndrome with on-off phenomena. Repeated MRI scans of the brain showed no pathology; brain FDG-PET scans indic

Multiple primary neoplasms in patients with salivary gland or thyroid gland tumors.

The exact risk of multiple primary neoplasms in patients with salivary gland or thyroid gland malignancies is difficult to ascertain from the data available in the literature. This study examines, retrospectively, 198 patients with a first malignancy of the salivary gland and 186 patients with a first malignancy of the thyroid gland, treated over a 10-year period. Fourteen cases of second tumors were found in the first group and 29 cases in the latter. Patients whose second neoplasm was a skin cancer or who had a previous neoplasm at a site other than those selected for study were excluded. Th

Familial neurogenic tumor syndromes.

Cancer caused more than 0.5 million deaths in the United States in 2000. This estimate includes patients who have a genetic predisposition to neoplastic disease, including brain neoplasms. Familial tumor syndromes are important to identify clinically because family members require high degrees of monitoring and genetic counseling. Study of these individuals and families has led to the discovery of genes that are an intrinsic aspect of cell regulation and will continue to be relevant in defining mechanisms of neoplastic development in brain and other tissues.

Trigeminal nerve root entry zone pilocytic astrocytoma in an adult: a rare case of an extraparenchymal tumor.

Extra-axial cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors account for approximately 10% of all brain neoplasms in adults. Vestibular schwannomas are the most common, followed by meningiomas. Gliomas in the CPA are rare and quite often are the exophytic extension of primary brain stem or cerebellar tumors. We describe a pilocytic astrocytoma of the CPA that was found to arise from the proximal portion of trigeminal nerve without any anatomic continuity with the brain stem and the cerebellum. Pre-operative MRI suggested a schwannoma. The proposed origin of this extremely rare tumor is the root entry zone

Intracranial neoplasms in children with neurofibromatosis 1.

Neurofibromatosis 1 is associated with an increased risk for the development of benign and malignant tumors involving neural and non-neural tissues. Children as well as adults with neurofibromatosis 1 are affected. Central nervous system neoplasms represent a significant portion of these malignancies and appear primarily in children less than 10 years of age. Optic pathway gliomas and brainstem gliomas are the most common intracranial neoplasms found in neurofibromatosis 1, although there also is an increased incidence of other brain tumors in this population. The majority of these intracrania

Solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of a case of solitary fibrous tumor of the meninges at the base of the brain are reported. The tumor caused clinical symptoms in a 42-year-old Caucasian male which were indicative of compression of hypothalamus, basal ganglia, and third ventricle. Radiologically it was a large extra-axial mass isointense to brain parenchyma on precontrast T1-weighted images that filled the suprasellar cistern and deformed the left cerebral peduncle. At surgery, the tumor was firm to hard and attached to dura. Histologically the tumor was composed of spindle-cel

Do Glioblastomas with Syndromic Association Have Better Prognosis? A Case of Supratentorial Glioblastoma with Embryonal Tumor Differentiation in a Child with Multiple Enchondromatosis.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive cancerous neoplasm of the brain that has numerous morphological subtypes. Primitive neuroectodermal differentiation (hereafter, referred to as embryonal tumor [ET] differentiation) in GBM is one of them and is known to occur in adults. Their presentation in pediatric population is rare and can be a source of diagnostic confusion. The dual pathology leads to doubts where one could ask whether it is ET differentiation in GBM specimen or glial differentiation in ET specimen. This histological discrimination has a bearing on the treatment regimens and prognosis.

[Mortality in a cohort of workers working with pulp and paper].

Mortality among workers in the Polish pulp and paper industry was evaluated in retrospective cohort study of 10460 workers who had been employed continuously for at least one year between 1968 and 1990 in the factory producing sulphate pulp, paper, board and paper products. A standardized mortality ratio (SMR) analysis was used to compare death rates for the exposure group with Polish national rates. For all the subjects death due to all causes and all malignant neoplasms were lower than the number expected. The only significantly increased risks were those of malignant neoplasm of brain among

A rare trifocal presentation of a choroid plexus papilloma: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: CPP's present as slow-growing intraventricular neoplasms arising from epithelium of choroid plexus. They account for approximately 0.5-4% of intracranial neoplasms in adults and children, respectively. A trifocal presentation is exceedingly rare. RESEARCH QUESTION: We describe the case of a trifocal presentation of a CPP and explored the importance of genetic analyses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present the case of an 18-year old adolescent who was treated for a fourth ventricular and suprasellar neoplasm. Brain MRI revealed an intraventricular lesion in the fourth ventricle, as

[Symptomatic Epilepsy].

The notion of symptomatic epilepsy was historically reviewed. The structural etiologies of epilepsy include cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, neoplasms, and traumatic brain injuries. Infections are the most common etiology worldwide. Metabolic epilepsy directly results from a known or presumed metabolic disorder. Immune epilepsy occurs because of autoimmune-mediated central nervous system inflammation.

Solitary dural plasmacytoma with parenchymal invasion.

Primary solitary dural plasmacytoma is an uncommon neoplasm of plasma cell. The clinical presentation and neuroradiological findings of these tumors may be deceptive and resemble to the other most prevalent brain tumors. Solitary plasmacytoma mostly shows a benign behavior and malignant features like local invasion is so rare. We describe the case of parenchymal brain involvement by solitary dural plasmacytoma.

Glioblastoma multiforme in the posterior cranial fossa in a patient with neurofibromatosis type I.

Patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) have an increased risk of developing neoplasms. The most common brain tumors, found in 15%-20% of NF1 patients, are hypothalamic-optic gliomas, followed by brainstem and cerebellar pilocytic astrocytomas. These tumors generally have a benign nature. NF1 patients are predisposed to a 5-fold increased incidence of high-grade astrocytomas, which are usually located in supratentorial regions of the brain. We present an NF1 patient who developed a high-grade astrocytoma in the posterior fossa and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms.

Large B-cell Lymphoma With Interferon Regulatory Factor 4 Rearrangement Presenting as a Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma in the Brain.

Large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) with interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) rearrangement (LBCL-IRF4r) is a rare type of lymphoma with an overall favorable prognosis, and has been included as a distinct entity in the 2022 revision of the World Health Organization Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms. More common in pediatric/young adult populations and rare in older adults, it typically presents in the head and neck, specifically, the Waldeyer ring, and rarely in other sites. To our knowledge, it has not been reported as a primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma in the English language medic

Incidence of diabetes mellitus and neoplasia in Japanese short-statured children treated with growth hormone in the Genetics and Neuroendocrinology of Short Stature International Study (GeNeSIS).

The primary goal of the Genetics and Neuroendocrinology of Short Stature International Study (GeNeSIS) was to assess the safety and effectiveness of Humatrope®, a GH preparation, in the treatment of pediatric patients with short stature. We report our findings in the GH-treated Japanese pediatric population focusing on the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and occurrence of neoplasms. A total of 2,345 Japanese patients were assessed for safety. During a mean observation period of 3.2 yr, T2D occurred in 3 patients (0.13%) and slowly progressive insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (SPIDDM) rel

Case of the month. April 1996--pituitary tumor.

A 20 year old man presented with intermittent diplopia and difficulty focusing his leftward gaze during the past month. His past medical history was only significant for a dermoid cyst in the posterior fossa which was removed at age 10. MRI scans demonstrated a perisellar mass, eroding the sphenoid and surrounding the right carotid artery as well as extending into the sella. A transsphenoidal endoscopic resection was performed. The tumor was diagnosed as a germinoma (seminoma). Most germinomas in the brain arise in the pineal, however, germ cell neoplasms (including teratomas, germinomas and n
