Involvement of WAVE accumulation in Abeta/APP pathology-dependent tangle modification in Alzheimer's disease.

Synaptic deficits are closely correlated with cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and synaptic integrity is regulated by the actin cytoskeleton. We demonstrated here that the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein family verprolin-homologous protein (WAVE), a key molecule for actin assembly, co-aggregated with both hyperphosphorylated tau and phosphorylated collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2) in neurofibrillary tangles and abnormal neurites of the AD brain. Although phosphorylated CRMP2 accumulation was induced in the brains of JNPL3 mice, WAVE accumulation was not detected

Stimulating the sleeping brain: Current approaches to modulating memory-related sleep physiology.

BACKGROUND: One of the most audacious proposals throughout the history of psychology was the potential ability to learn while we sleep. The idea penetrated culture via sci-fi movies and inspired the invention of devices that claimed to teach foreign languages, facts, and even quit smoking by simply listening to audiocassettes or other devices during sleep. However, the promises from this endeavor didn't stand up to experimental scrutiny, and the dream was shunned from the scientific community. Despite the historic evidence that the sleeping brain cannot learn new complex information (i.e., wor

Amyloid beta and tau are associated with the dual effect of neuroinflammation on neurodegeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Current literature presents conflicting results regarding the impact of neuroinflammation on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related neurodegeneration. While some studies suggest that neuroinflammation potentiates neurodegeneration, others indicate a protective effect. METHODS: We evaluated 145 individuals with positron emission tomography (PET) for amyloid beta (Aβ), tau, and translocator protein (TSPO), a proxy of neuroinflammation, to test the hypothesis that Aβ and tau are associated with the dual effect of neuroinflammation on neurodegeneration across the AD continuum. RESULTS: T

Computational study of human head response to primary blast waves of five levels from three directions.

Human exposure to blast waves without any fragment impacts can still result in primary blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). To investigate the mechanical response of human brain to primary blast waves and to identify the injury mechanisms of bTBI, a three-dimensional finite element head model consisting of the scalp, skull, cerebrospinal fluid, nasal cavity, and brain was developed from the imaging data set of a human female. The finite element head model was partially validated and was subjected to the blast waves of five blast intensities from the anterior, right lateral, and posteri

Early auditory evoked potentials: developmental aspects and validity in neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Auditory evoked potentials and in this context especially five waves in the first 10 ms (early auditory evoked potentials = EAEP) are a diagnostic aid in topodiagnosis of posterior fossa diseases. This is due to waves I to V which arise along the acoustic nerve and in brain stem structures such as medulla, pons and mid-brain. Besides an indication about the site of a lesion in the posterior fossa, wave V allows an objective threshold determination. The present results were gained in normal children aged 1-3 years and in children with neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Effects of oral temazepam on slow waves during non-rapid eye movement sleep in healthy young adults: A high-density EEG investigation.

Slow waves are characteristic waveforms that occur during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep that play an integral role in sleep quality and brain plasticity. Benzodiazepines are commonly used medications that alter slow waves, however, their effects may depend on the time of night and measure used to characterize slow waves. Prior investigations have utilized minimal scalp derivations to evaluate the effects of benzodiazepines on slow waves, and thus the topography of changes to slow waves induced by benzodiazepines has yet to be fully elucidated. This study used high-density electroencephal

Peripheral high-energy missile hits cause pressure changes and damage to the nervous system: experimental studies on pigs.

The aim of the present study was to investigate pressure changes and possible damage to the central and peripheral nervous system induced by a high-energy missile striking a peripheral extremity. Anesthetized pigs were shot with a high-velocity missile (1,500 ms-1) in their left thigh. Transducers placed in the abdomen and brain recorded short-lasting bursts (1.0 to 1.5 ms) of oscillating pressure waves of high frequency. The amplitude of the pressure waves within the brain was about 125 KPa, and in the abdomen about 270 KPa, with a mean value of transferred energy from the missile of about 70

Brain rhythms of depression: A predictive processing perspective.

Depression is marked by anhedonia, social withdrawal, and a diminished capacity to learn from positive experiences-features that can be framed within predictive processing. Here, we review findings from human electroencephalography (EEG) that, owing to its temporal resolution, can illuminate the moment-to-moment dynamics of inference in depression. Across evoked, oscillatory, and aperiodic measures, incoming information appears to be registered yet may carry insufficient precision to revise higher-level beliefs about the self and the world. This imbalance may favour model maintenance over flex

Augmenting hippocampal-prefrontal neuronal synchrony during sleep enhances memory consolidation in humans.

Memory consolidation during sleep is thought to depend on the coordinated interplay between cortical slow waves, thalamocortical sleep spindles and hippocampal ripples, but direct evidence is lacking. Here, we implemented real-time closed-loop deep brain stimulation in human prefrontal cortex during sleep and tested its effects on sleep electrophysiology and on overnight consolidation of declarative memory. Synchronizing the stimulation to the active phases of endogenous slow waves in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) enhanced sleep spindles, boosted locking of brain-wide neural spiking activity

Turner's syndrome: a qualitative and quantitative analysis of EEG background activity.

A qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed on the EEG background activity in 62 Danish girls and women with Turner's syndrome (30 with karyotype 45,X and 32 with other karyotypes) whose ages ranged from 6 to 47 years (87% were aged 15 years or more) and age-matched controls. The pooled data and a case-control study showed characteristic features in Turner subjects, including: (1) more rapid frequency, larger amplitude and lower amount of alpha waves, (2) higher amount of theta waves, (3) larger amplitude and higher amount of delta waves and (4) larger amplitude and higher amount of

The influence of N2-O2 and He-O2 saturation diving on electroencephalogram of human bodies.

This paper reports the changes of the EEG of human bodies during saturation exposure at different depths to different mixed gases. The results of the research show that the most obvious on EEG was the appearance of diffused slow waves, usually theta waves of 4-7 times/s, and delta waves of 2-3 times/s within individual subjects. The EEG changes at 50 m were more obvious than those at 36.5 m. With the prolonging of time under high pressure, the EEG had some improvements, for instance, the slow waves decreased and the alpha waves increased. There was a certain relationship between these changes

[Electrophysiological monitoring of the brainstem function in impending brain death--serial changes of blink reflex and brainstem auditory evoked potential].

Serial changes of EEG, BR and BAEP recordings were obtained over a period of two days on two patients who had suffered massive cerebral hemorrhage while their clinical condition evolved from coma with evidence of preserved cerebral and brainstem functions to a state meeting the criteria of brain death. As clinical evidence of deteriorating brainstem function became apparent in case 1, first wave IV and V components of BAEP disappeared while waves I to III were normal. Finally, when clinical criteria of brain death were fulfilled, the BAEP response was restricted to wave I with small amplitude

Bird-like propagating brain activity in anesthetized Nile crocodiles.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) activity that characterize sleep and its sub-states-slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-are similar in mammals and birds. SWS is characterized by EEG slow waves resulting from the synchronous alternation of neuronal membrane potentials between hyperpolarized down-states with neuronal quiescence and depolarized up-states associated with action potentials. By contrast, studies of non-avian reptiles report the presence of high-voltage sharp waves (HShW) during sleep. How HShW relate to EEG phenomena occurring during

Pathophysiological insight into transient global amnesia from quantitative electroencephalography.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is recognized as a benign memory disorder, with characteristic clinical and imaging features. However, the pathophysiology of TGA remains elusive. This study aims to elucidate the pathophysiological changes underlying TGA by exploring the brain activities. In total, 215 patients with TGA (age: 61.8 ± 7.8 years; women: 146) with MRI (within 7 days) and EEG studies (within 90 days) were recruited. Quantitative EEG (QEEG) power spectra and network analysis were performed by the artificial intelligence EEG analysis platform (iSyncBrain®). Subgroup analyses were condu

B-waves are present in patients without intracranial pressure disturbances.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) B-waves are defined as short, repeating elevations of ICP of up to 50 mmHg with a frequency of 0.5-2 waves/min. The presence of B-waves in overnight recordings is regarded as a pathological phenomenon. However, the physiology of B-waves is still not fully understood and studies with transcranial Doppler, as a surrogate marker for ICP, have suggested that B-waves could be a normal physiological phenomenon. We present four patients without known structural neurological disease other than a coincidentally found unruptured intracranial aneurysm. One of the patients had

[Systemic blood pressure and respiration during plateau wave phenomena].

The intracranial pressure, systemic blood pressure, respiratory pattern and heart rate were studied polygraphically in five patients with plateau waves in continuous intracranial pressure recording. Three brain-tumor patients and two benign intracranial hypertension patients were included. The intracranial pressure was recorded through an indwelling ventricular catheter attached to a pressure transducer. The systemic blood pressure was recorded through an intraarterial catheter placed in the femoral artery. The recordings were made from 18 to 40 hours and a total of 770 plateau waves were exam

Lambda waves: incidence and relationship to photic driving.

The earliest studies on lambda waves in the 1950s postulated a relationship with the photic driving response. Intracranial depth electrode studies from the 1960s showed generators for lambda waves and the occipital driving response to be different but both originating from the posterior hemisphere. Use of computer averaging techniques in the 1980s found these two cerebral responses to be similarly affected by certain diseases. We examined the incidence of lambda over a wider range of ages than previously studied, and also evaluated for a statistical correlation between lambda and occipital dri

[Electroencephalographic changes during experimental plateau waves].

The present study was designed to induce plateau waves by electrical stimulation of the brain stem and examine the changes in EEG during the plateau waves. Experiments were carried out on 10 adult mongrel dogs which were slightly anesthetized, immobilized and artificially respired. Electroencephalogram (EEG), intracranial pressure (ICP), systemic blood pressure (SBP) and cerebral perfusion pressure were simultaneously recorded on the electromagnetic tape after transorbital puncture of the intracavernous internal carotid artery. EEGs were recorded from cortical electrodes, and were analyzed by
