Abomasal impaction in buffaloes: Risk factors, clinical indicators, necropsy findings, and histology studies.

The present study aims to identify potential risk factors and most possible clinical indicators of abomasal impaction in buffaloes. Among the screened buffaloes (n = 636), the logistic model was fitted for 491 buffaloes because of the non-availability of parity-related data for 145 buffaloes. Third-trimester pregnancy, feeding paddy straw alone, and concurrent disorders were identified as the potential risk factors using multivariate regression analysis. The buffaloes reared by farmers devoid of land tended to have a higher incidence of abomasal impaction. Depressed demeanour, absence of rumin

Calcium influx and release mechanism(s) in histamine-induced myometrial contraction in buffaloes.

The present study was undertaken to characterize the presence of histamine H1R using molecular biology tools and unravel the influx and release mechanism(s) involved in calcium signalling cascades in histamine-induced myometrial contraction in buffaloes. The presence of H1R mRNA transcript and immunoreactive membrane protein in buffalo myometrium was confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Further, histamine produced concentration-dependent (1nM-10μM) contraction in buffalo myometrium with a potency of 7.13±0.11. When myometrial strips were pre-incubated either with Ca(2+) free solution

Lowered antioxidant status of red blood cells in post-parturient haemoglobinuria of buffaloes.

The antioxidant status of the red blood cells of buffaloes (n = 20) suffering from post-parturient haemoglobinuria (PPH) was assessed by comparing their tocopherol (vitamin E) and reduced glutathione contents with those of red blood cells from apparently healthy buffaloes (n = 20). The red cell tocopherol content of the diseased buffaloes (1.76 +/- 0.11 micrograms/ml) was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than that of healthy buffaloes (2.45 +/- 0.14 micrograms/ml). This may be the first report comparing the concentration of tocopherol in the red blood cells of buffaloes suffering from PPH and ap

Seasonal influence on thyroidal response to thyrotrophin-releasing hormone in cattle and buffaloes.

The effect of thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) on the circulating plasma levels of tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) was determined in the same group of animals (four cattle and four Murrah buffaloes) during hot dry (HD), hot humid (HH) and cold environmental conditions. Plasma T3 and T4 concentrations were measured during 2 h before and up to 12 h after the administration of TRH (200 micrograms i.v.). In the preinjection period in both cattle and buffaloes T3 levels were significantly lower in HH conditions. No significant difference in basal (preinjection) T3 levels was observed

Trivalent AMH-INH-RFRP DNA Vaccine Enhances Estrus and Ovulation Rates in Buffaloes.

BACKGROUND: Buffaloes have a significant share in the agricultural economies of many developing countries; however, the industry is not well-established because of the low reproductive efficiency of buffaloes. In this study, we designed a novel strategy to enhance buffalo reproductive efficiency and examined the significance of intramuscular AMH-INH-RFRP DNA vaccine immunization on reproductive performance. METHODS: Allocated into four groups (n = 30/group), female buffaloes (aged 5-8 years, n = 120) were randomly enrolled in the study. Treatment groups received 10 mL of AMH-INH-RFRP DNA vacc

The Potential of Infrared Thermography for Early Pregnancy Diagnosis in Nili-Ravi Buffaloes.

This study was designed to explore the potential of infrared thermography (IRT) as an alternate approach for early pregnancy diagnosis in buffaloes. The surface temperature (ST) of different regions (eyes, muzzle, flanks, and vulva) was determined in 27 buffaloes using IRT from the day of artificial insemination (AI; Day 0), and measurement was repeated every fourth day until Day 24 post-AI. From all regions, the ST in each thermograph was recorded at three temperature values (maximum, average, minimum). Pregnancy status was confirmed through ultrasonography on Day 30, and animals were retrosp

Identification and Characterisation of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in African Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer), South Africa.

Diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) may be confounded by immunological cross-reactivity to Mycobacterium bovis antigens when animals are sensitised by certain nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate NTM species diversity in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) respiratory secretions and tissue samples, using a combination of novel molecular tools. Oronasal swabs were collected opportunistically from 120 immobilised buffaloes in historically bTB-free herds. In addition, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF; n = 10) and tissue samples (n = 19) were obtained d
