Amphibian conservation goals depend on effective disease-treatment protocols. The ultrastructure of the glomus cells of the carotid labyrinth was investigated in the anuran, Xenopus laevis. These cells show many catecholamine containing granules. About 50 cells in groups of 3-5 are located near the sinusoids. Morphologically, their organelles are similar to those previously reported in Bufo vulgaris. Striking features are (1) intimate appostion of the glomus cell to smooth muscle (g-s connection), (2) gap junctions between adjacent glomus cells, (3) exocytotic figures. Based on these findings a possible function of the glomus cell is discussed.

We have analyzed products of the serotonin-degradative pathway, in which both N-methylserotonin and bufotenine are formed in urine specimens of products with psychiatric disorders by three-dimensional HPLC with electrochemical detection. Bufotenine was detected in urine from all autistic patients with mental retardation and epilepsy (n = 18) and many autistic patients (32/47) with mental retardation. INTRODUCTION: Despite Pakistan's rich amphibian fauna, frog and toad species remain largely unexplored regarding blood-borne parasites.
METHODS: This study aims to investigate potential infections by toxoplasma gondii and Hepatozoon spp. in four amphibian species (n = 223) collected from various regions in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
RESULTS: Molecular analyses revealed that 17 out of 223 amphibians (7.6%) were infected with Hepatozoon spp., with the highest infection rates found in Bufo olivaceous (20.0%), followed by Bufo stomaticus (9.3%) and Hoplobatrachus tigerinus (5.05%).

Mucor amphibiorum is reported for the first time from a free-ranging native amphibian, a green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) from Queensland, Australia. The nasal cavity was largely replaced by granulomatous inflammatory tissue, and most internal organs had nodular granulomas. The effects of fluphenazine, a phenothiazine calmodulin inhibitor, on the osmotic water flow (Posm) across isolated skins of Bufo arenarum toads were tested. Fluphenazine inhibited the increase in Posm induced by agents known to act through the cyclic AMP system (oxytocin, db-cAMP, theophylline, KCl and isoproterenol). The inhibitory effect was faster and more intense when the drug was present in the epidermal bath, and persisted after rinsing the preparation for 100 min. Our results indicate that phenothiazine's action may be primarily exerted at a site distal to cyclic AMP generation.

Water snakes (Natrix natrix), rat snakes (Ptyas korros), cobras (Naja naja), pythons (Python molurus), tortoises (Kachuga sp.), plankton fish (Cirrhina mrigala), frogs (Rana tigrina), toads (Bufo sp.) and monitors (Varanus indicus) were screened for evidence of Q-fever infection by the capillary agglutination test on sera to detect antibodies and/or by attempts to demonstrate Coxiella burnetii in spleen and liver samples. Sero-reactors were observed among water and rat snakes, pythons and tortoises. The organism was isolated from the spleen and liver of the monitor, tortoise and python.

During a 20 yr period (1978 to 1998), 233 isolates of Salmonella spp. were cultured from 179 wildlife animals (representing 25 species), 32 crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) eggs and six crocodile nesting sites, and represented 59 different serotypes. Salmonella serotype Virchow, the major serotype infecting humans in north Queensland, (Australia) was common in macropodids, but was not found in reptiles and was isolated only once from cane toads (Bufo marinus). Investigations of human cases of salmonellosis should include simultaneous studies on wild and domestic animals in contact with the case.

A new nematode species, Foleyellides rhinellae sp. nov. (Onchocercidae), is described from specimens found in the body cavity of the cane toad, Rhinella marina (Linnaeus) (Anura, Bufonidae), in the Laguna de Coyuca, Guerrero, in the Pacific slope of Mexico. The new species differs from the other nine species of Foleyellides by infecting bufonid anurans and by the number and arrangement of caudal papillae.
