Challenges to Adolescent Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake: an Exploration of Black and Latino American Parents' Beliefs, Attitudes, and Receptivity to PrEP.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among adolescents has been slow. This has been attributed to factors such as stigma, lack of PrEP awareness, financial burdens, and provider apprehension about prescribing PrEP. In this study, we sought to understand the impact of familial factors on PrEP uptake among youth. METHODS: We conducted three focus groups with parents of Black and Latino adolescents to gather insights about attitudes, beliefs and receptivity to PrEP uptake among adolescents. Parents were recruited through a teen health clinic in New York City. Data were transcribed,

A Bottleneck Analysis of Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Program in Pakistan.

Iron and folic acid deficiency is a significant public health concern, especially in low and middle-income countries, particularly among women of reproductive age, leading to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. In Pakistan, approximately 41.7% of women of reproductive age have iron deficiency. For this research, we conducted 33 key informant interviews and 32 focus group discussions with stakeholders from all four provinces and the two federally administered regions of Pakistan for in-depth and representative bottleneck assessment. The modified Tanahashi model was used to inform the de

Integrating human linguistic insights into AI: theory-driven representation for multilingual text-to-speech.

This paper explores the integration of human linguistic insights into multilingual text-to-speech (TTS) systems by evaluating the Featurally Underspecified Lexicon (FUL) as a theory-driven input representation. Unlike data-intensive end-to end models, FUL offers a compact, interpretable feature set grounded in phonological principles, enabling scalable and equitable TTS development for low-resource languages. We provide a mapping from language-specific phones to FUL feature vectors via a SAMPA intermediate and incorporate these features into a modified FastSpeech architecture. Experiments were

Using a community of practice to develop standards of practice and education for genetic counsellors in Europe.

The profession of genetic counselling is developing in Europe in response to the increased need for genetic healthcare. Standards of education and professional practice are needed to ensure that patients are provided with genetic counselling of an appropriate quality. However, such standards need to be relevant to practitioners in many different national and healthcare settings. In order to develop appropriate standards and a code of practice to guide professionals in Europe, we formed a community of practice that includes genetic nurses and counsellors, plus other interested health profession

De Novo Natural Language Processing Algorithm Accurately Identifies Myxofibrosarcoma From Pathology Reports.

BACKGROUND: Available codes in the ICD-10 do not accurately reflect soft tissue sarcoma diagnoses, and this can result in an underrepresentation of soft tissue sarcoma in databases. The National VA Database provides a unique opportunity for soft tissue sarcoma investigation because of the availability of all clinical results and pathology reports. In the setting of soft tissue sarcoma, natural language processing (NLP) has the potential to be applied to clinical documents such as pathology reports to identify soft tissue sarcoma independent of ICD codes, allowing sarcoma researchers to build m

Bacteriophage-encoded 24B_1 molecule resembles herpesviral microRNAs and plays a crucial role in the development of both the virus and its host.

The 24B_1 small non-coding RNA molecule has been identified in Escherichia coli after induction of Shiga toxin-converting bacteriophage Φ24B. In this work, we focused on its direct role during phage and bacterial host development. We observed that in many aspects, this phage sRNA resembles herpesviral microRNAs. Similar to microRNAs, the mature 24B_1 is a short molecule, consisting of just 20 nucleotides. It is generated by cleaving the 80-nt long precursor transcript, and likely it undergoes a multi-step maturation process in which the Hfq protein plays an important role, as confirmed by demo

Neural tracking of subjective value under riskand ambiguity in adolescence.

Although many neuroimaging studies on adolescent risk taking have focused on brain activation during outcome valuation, less attention has been paid to the neural correlates of choice valuation. Subjective choice valuation may be particularly influenced by whether a choice presents risk (known probabilities) or ambiguity (unknown probabilities), which has rarely been studied in developmental samples. Therefore, we examined the neural tracking of subjective value during choice under risk and ambiguity in a large sample of adolescents (N = 188, 12-22 years). Specifically, we investigated which b

The Africa We Want: A Perspective on the African Code Against Cancer To Be Developed for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces a unique cancer burden, characterized by a disproportionately high mortality-to-incidence ratio, a large share of infection-related cancers, and distinct environmental exposures. Implementation of national policies on primary prevention is limited, and public literacy regarding cancer risk and curability remains low. Furthermore, the implementation of existing prevention and treatment interventions is hindered by resource constraints and deeply rooted cultural beliefs. Thus, cancer prevention guidelines developed for other regions are often inadequate for this sp

Exploring climate pollutants levels and variations in Islamabad's built-environment: A nature-based policy framework for sustainable emissions management.

The growing energy consumption in Islamabad is escalating temperatures and climate-related risks for residents, exacerbated by the absence of sustainable strategies. Therefore, this study was conducted to probe climate pollutants (carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and methane (CH4)) levels in the built environment of Islamabad. Based on these emissions, a nature-based solutions (NbS) approach was then proposed to manage the identified pollutants from urban developments. Data on electricity consumption (n = 44,792), natural gas usage (n = 33,632), and carbon fluxes were

Proposing an explanatory framework based on the fear-avoidance model: a mixed-methods analysis of kinesiophobia in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention in home-based cardiac rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is safe and effective for patients with coronary artery disease, with home-based programs typically delivered through digital platforms (e.g., mobile applications, wearable devices) that enable remote monitoring and personalized guidance. However, home-based rehabilitation, while offering flexibility in time and location, is frequently impeded by kinesiophobia. This study aimed to identify the determinants of kinesiophobia in patients following percutaneous coronary intervention and to examine their interplay in driving maladaptive fear and i
