The distribution of Schistosoma haematobium infections in a population of Bulinus globosus snails collected from a field site in Zimbabwe is described. Cercariae of both sexes emerged from a proportion of patent infected snails, as was demonstrated by the detection of paired schistosomes in hamsters each exposed to cercariae from a single snail. These snails must have been infected by two or more miracidia. Analysis showed that the proportion of mixed-sex infections was higher than expected if infections were distributed at random among snails. An index of overdispersion was calculated. Overdi

The intermediate snail host of Schistosoma haematobium, the etiological agent of urogenital schistosomiasis, serves as a critical sentinel for tracking the spread of associated disease risks. In addition to S. haematobium, Bulinus spp. snails also transmit S. bovis to cattle as well as several non-schistosome trematodes to cattle and wildlife. Identifying transmission foci of these multi-parasite hosts is critical for targeted and effective One Health intervention. We investigated 467 waterbodies in 86 villages across six districts in northwestern Tanzania. A total of 43,348 Bulinus nasutus we

Irrigation for intensive sugar cultivation started in the early 1980s at Richard Toll, some 100 km from the mouth of the Senegal River. Infections with Schistosoma mansoni were first seen in late 1988. This study records quantitative snail surveys for over 3 years from 1992 at sites representing different habitats in and around the irrigation scheme. Populations of both Biomphalaria pfeifferi (the intermediate host of S. mansoni) and Bulinus spp. (mainly B. truncatus, the local host of S. boris) peaked in late 'spring' or early 'summer', depending on the habitat, and then remained low until th

This epidemiological study was conducted to evaluate the incidence of intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis in children from 6 to 14 years old in the district of Bandafassi of east Senegal. The stools of 505 children from 10 villages were examined. In addition water holes that might serve as biotopes for the intermediate host snails, i.e., Biomphalaria sp. and Bulinus sp., were located and tested. Findings demonstrated the existence of permanent foci of S. mansoni deep within the bush of the Bandafassi district. Sporadic distribution of praziquantel has been effective but not sufficient to er

In the Attaouia area, the density of Bulinus truncatus (Audouin, 1827), was monitored monthly for a period of one year in correlation with weather variations. Snails were active throughout the year and particularly abundant at the end of spring and summer. Two snail generations were found to overlap. The infection rate of B. truncatus reached a maximum of 3.5% in the summer when human water contact was frequent. A selective survey conducted in the village of Lamyayha showed that the prevalence of infection with S. haematobium among the local population was 21.2% who were passing from 10 to 80

A survey was made on the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis in 14 localities in 4 areas in Somalia has revealed the presence of urinary bilharziasis among the inhabitants of all these localities, this being much higher in the two areas where water development has been accomplished. The mean prevalence of infection was found to be 27.2% and 58.1% in the two areas where water development has only been planned, while it was 58.7% and 75.6% in the two areas where the extension of irrigation was achieved years ago. Snails were collected from the habitats visited and these were identified.

The molluscicidal properties of Damsin "I", Ambrosin "II", and tribromodamsin "III" were investigated against the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus. Although Damsin was to some extent more toxic against B. alexandrina than the other two compounds, it was less toxic than them against B. truncatus after 24 hr exposure periods. There is a flex relationship between concentration of Damsin and exposure period to prodce 100% mortality. The molluscicidal potency of Damsin remained stable over a wide range of pH values, but was affected by storage, su

The snail Biomphalaria arabica is apparently ubiquitous in the south of Oman (Dhofar province). Snails bred in the laboratory were susceptible to infection with miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (Puerto Rican strain). The snail Bulinus wrighti, a potential intermediate host of S. haematobium, was found for the first time in Dhofar. Human sera from five localities had antibodies against adult worm antigens and in particular against Sm31/32. The prevalence of seropositive patients was 28% of 47 farm workers, 12% of 99 out-patients from a clinic and 1% of 389 children from four localities. Autocht

BACKGROUND: Despite twelve rounds of school-based preventive chemotherapy for schistosomiasis in endemic areas of Tanzania such as Mtama district, Lindi: the burden of Schistosoma haematobium infection has remained highly conceivable due to re-infections. The factors associated with continuity of S.haematobium transmission in Mtama district, Lindi have not been fully established. This study investigated the burden and factors contributing to the ongoing transmission of S.haematobium infection in the endemic district of Mtama, Lindi.

The results of four field surveys in Senegal are reported. 1. A snail survey in various parts of the Senegal River Basin, including the Senegal River, temporary rain-fed pools, swamps, irrigation canals and drains, ricefields and Lac de Guier was carried out. Three species of snails were commonly found: Bulinus guernei was the most common, occurring in permanent habitats, Bulinus senegalensis occurring in laterite pools in the eastern part of the Middle Valley, and also in the ricefields of Guédé Chantier and Lampsar; B. forskalii was found in small numbers in Lac de Guier and Richard Toll. BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is endemic in Nigeria, and the treatment is largely concentrated on children enrolled in schools. Consequently, the coverage of non-enrolled school-aged children is often neglected. Ajagba and Awosan are two communities in Nigeria that have never had any control intervention. Hence, this survey was designed to determine the endemicity of urogenital schistosomiasis and to evaluate the efficacy of a single-dose praziquantel in the communities.
METHODS: Urine sample (10 mL) of each participant from Ajagba and Awosan communities was filtered through 12μm polycarbonate

BACKGROUND: Humans impose a significant pressure on large herbivore populations, such as hippopotami, through hunting, poaching, and habitat destruction. Anthropogenic pressures can also occur indirectly, such as artificial lake creation and the subsequent introduction of invasive species that alter the ecosystem. These events can lead to drastic changes in parasite diversity and transmission, but generally receive little scientific attention.
RESULTS: In order to document and identify trematode parasites of the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) in artificial water systems of Zimba

This study accessed the dynamics of urogenital schistosomiasis transmission in Nkalagu Community. A total of 500 mid-day urine samples were collected and transported to Microbiology Laboratory, Ebonyi State University, for analysis. 10ml each of the urine samples was centrifuged at 2500 rpm for 5 minutes. Transmission potential of snail intermediate host of Schistosomes collected from different sampling station at the transmission sites within the study community was equally accessed. The snail species collected were placed individually into a clean beaker with little quantity of water and the

Investigations of nuclear genome size, complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence, and morphometrics were conducted on specimens of Bulinus snails (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) collected from 14 locations across the east coast, central Kenya, and western Kenya around the Lake Victoria region (November 2013 and January 2024). Flow cytometry measurements of DNA content (C-value) revealed unexpected variation in nuclear genome size, with diploid Bulinus africanus and B. forskalii species groups showing C-values ranging from 0.76 to 1.98 pg, while tetraploid B. truncatus had a C-value of 1.82

The Louisiana red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, which was introduced into east Africa in the 1950s or 1960s, has since widely dispersed. Previous work by our group has shown that P. clarkii can reduce populations of the molluscan intermediate hosts of human schistosomes through predatory and competitive interactions. Here, we investigate whether crayfish can reduce populations of Bulinus africanus and consequently, Schistosoma haematobium prevalence in school children. Children from 6 primary schools in the Machakos and Kitui Districts of Kenya were selected for study. Schools were divi

We report the preliminary findings of a comprehensive schistosomiasis survey in the Qalyub region of the Nile Delta. A systematic sample of households in eight villages was studied, and 8,712 individuals submitted stool and urine specimens for parasitologic examinations. The prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infection (40.5%) was much higher than that reported previously in this area, and the prevalence of S. haematobium (27%) was much lower. The geometric mean egg output for both parasites was surprisingly low. The apparent increase in S. mansoni infection may be largely due to the use of a v

Biological control of schistosomiasis by means of introduction of the north American planorbid snail, Helisoma duryi, as a competitor of the intermediate host snails has been proposed. The systematics of the genus Helisoma and the geographic distribution of the different species is described. Papers dealing with laboratory experiments or field observations on the competition between H. duryi and different intermediate host snails have been reviewed. The status of H. duryi as intermediate host of trematodes has been evaluated by searching the literature for all the trematode species that are re

Schistosomiasis, a prevalent public health issue specifically in sub-Saharan Africa, is primarily attributed to Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni, often occurring concurrently. These schistosome species share similarities in life cycles and transmission, manifesting comparable infection patterns and susceptibility to temperature variations. This study investigates the influence of temperature control not only on the transmission of individual species but also on their mutual interactions and co-infection dynamics using a mathematical model. Sub-models and co-dynamic properties, i

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is an important snail-borne parasitic disease whose transmission is exacerbated by water resource management activities. In Rwanda, meeting the growing population's demand for food has led to wetlands reclamation for cultivation and increased agrochemical enrichment for crop production. However, the ecological consequences of agrochemical enrichment on schistosomiasis transmission remain unexplored.
METHODS: A malacological survey was conducted in 71 villages selected from 15 schistosomiasis endemic districts. Snail sampling was done in wetlands used for agricultur
