Well supplied in life, set aside in death: A multi-isotope study of Justinian plague victims from Saint-Doulchard (France, 7th-8th centuries AD).

OBJECTIVES: Justinian plague and its subsequent outbreaks were major events influencing Early Medieval Europe. One of the affected communities was the population of Saint-Doulchard in France, where plague victim burials were concentrated in a cemetery enclosure ditch. This study aimed to obtain more information about their life-histories using the tools of isotope analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dietary analysis using carbon and nitrogen isotopes was conducted on 97 individuals buried at Le Pressoir in Saint-Doulchard, with 36 of those originating from the enclosure ditch. This sample set in

AvaLife-A New Multi-Disciplinary Approach Supported by Accident and Field Test Data to Optimize Survival Chances in Rescue and First Aid of Avalanche Patients.

Snow sports in the backcountry have seen a steep increase in popularity, and therefore preparedness for efficient companion and organized rescue is important. While technical rescue skills are widely taught, there is a lack of knowledge regarding first aid for avalanche patients. The stressful and time-critical situation for first responders requires a rule-based decision support tool. AvaLife has been designed from scratch, applying mathematical and statistical approaches including Monte Carlo simulations. New analysis of retrospective data and large prospective field test datasets were used

A study of the haptic bearing angles in eyes with the Optiflex anterior chamber implant.

Gonioscopy and goniophotography were performed on 137 eyes with the Optiflex angle supported implant. At the time of gonioscopy the lenses had been in situ for a median of 20 months, with a range of 3-38 months. In 75.9% of cases one or both haptics were positioned posterior to the scleral spur with some degree of iris push. Iris tuck was seen in 29.2% of cases. Three different types of fibrous tissue formations were seen in the angles. The first two types (sleeving and iris haptic adhesions) occurred in the majority of cases and were haptic related. The third type was in the form of true peri

Transverse (Harris) lines in Irish archaeological remains.

Transverse lines were examined in 633 long bones from 73 individuals exhumed from two burial sites in the Republic of Ireland: Waterford City and Tintern Abbey. The burials cover four distinct periods between the 11th and 17th centuries. Lines were most numerous in the tibia, especially in the distal segment, and were not seen in the humerus nor the proximal part of the femur. The number of lines varied between the proximal and distal segments of each long bone, and though apparently equal in number across the midline, there were significant differences in the incidence of lines between corres

Cholera Mortality during Urban Epidemic, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, August 16, 2015-January 16, 20161.

In 2015, a cholera epidemic occurred in Tanzania; most cases and deaths occurred in Dar es Salaam early in the outbreak. We evaluated cholera mortality through passive surveillance, burial permits, and interviews conducted with decedents' caretakers. Active case finding identified 101 suspected cholera deaths. Routine surveillance had captured only 48 (48%) of all cholera deaths, and burial permit assessments captured the remainder. We interviewed caregivers of 56 decedents to assess cholera management behaviors. Of 51 decedents receiving home care, 5 (10%) used oral rehydration solution after

Play or foul play: A case of perimortem cranial injuries on a child from Yaoheyuan, Western Zhou China (1046-771 BCE).

OBJECTIVE: This paper evaluates evidence of trauma observed on a skeleton of a child from Ningxia, China in order to assess the potential cause of the lesions. MATERIALS: Skeletonized remains of Individual M26:R3 from the site of Yaoheyuan in Western Zhou, dated 1046-771 BCE. METHODS: Standard osteological methods were carried out. Nano-CT scans were used to determine possible endocranial trauma and to reconstruct the crania. Ancient DNA analysis was conducted on the remains of the three individuals interred in burial M26 to determine possible kinship relationships. RESULTS: A total of 59 i

The final plague outbreak in Scotland 1644-1649: Historical, archaeological, and genetic evidence.

This paper has several aims: to determine if Yersinia pestis was the causative agent in the last Scottish plague outbreak in the mid-17th century; map the geographic spread of the epidemic and isolate potential contributing factors to its spread and severity; and examine funerary behaviours in the context of a serious plague epidemic in early modern Scotland. Results confirm the presence of Y. pestis in individuals associated with a mid-17th century plague pit in Aberdeen. This is the first time this pathogen has been identified in an archaeological sample from Scotland. The geographic spread

Mozart's chronic subdural hematoma.

No commemoration of the bicentennial of Mozart's death would be complete without some consideration of that premature yet predictable demise. Mozart's premonitions of death are well known and apparently played a role in the composition of the K.626 Requiem and perhaps other works. His death has traditionally been ascribed to infectious causes, chiefly rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, exacerbated by intemperance and chronic penury. Pathology has been difficult because of his supposed burial in a pauper's grave, the location and contents of which were later supposedly lo

Physiological effects of providing supplemental air for avalanche victims. A randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Survival from avalanche burial is dependent on time to extraction, breathing ability, air pocket oxygen content, and avoiding rebreathing of carbon dioxide (CO2). Mortality from asphyxia increases rapidly after burial. Rescue services often arrive too late. Our objective was to evaluate the physiological effects of providing personal air supply in a simulated avalanche scenario as a possible concept to delay asphyxia. We hypothesize that supplemental air toward victim's face into the air pocket will prolong the window of potential survival. METHODS: A prospective randomized crosso

The effects of soil environment on postmortem interval: a macroscopic analysis.

Burial environment, in particular soil moisture, has a significant impact on the type, rate, and extent of bone degradation, which ultimately affects estimations of the postmortem interval (PMI). The purpose of this research is to determine the effects of soil moisture on the color, weight, condition, and texture of bone as it relates to the PMI. Bone changes occurring over two different time intervals (2 and 5 months) were examined using 120 sus scrofa leg bones. During each time interval bones were buried in two soil environments, one of which was drier than the other. The bones in both envi

Mortality From 1918-1919 Spanish Flu Among the American Expeditionary Forces Analyzed Through People-Powered Research.

INTRODUCTION: The Card Register of Burials of Deceased American Soldiers, 1917-1922 holds the burial cards of American servicemen and women who died at sea or overseas during or after World War I (WWI). We aimed to use this online register to study mortality statistics in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during the 3 waves of Spanish flu in 1918 and 1919. However, the register, which includes 104 file units, lacks database query functionality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over 6,000 volunteers attached to the Zooniverse platform for people-powered research submitted 4 million transcription t

Study on the Development, Evolution, and Main Controlling Factors of Gypsum Moldic Vugs in Ma54 1, Central Ordos Basin.

This study focuses on Member 54 1 of the Majiagou Formation in the central Ordos Basin. By comprehensively applying analytical techniques such as core observation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and carbon and oxygen isotope analysis, it systematically reveals the development and evolution patterns of gypsum moldic pores. The study finds that gypsum moldic pores are mainly hosted in gypsum-bearing dolomites, and their development process is superimposed and modified by multiple diagenetic stages, including a sedimentary environment, epigenetic meteoric freshwater dissolution with differential fillin

An outbreak of type C botulism in 12 horses and a mule.

A USDA Early Response Team investigated deaths of several horses and a mule in northern Arizona at the request of local animal health officials. Thirteen animals (12 horses and 1 mule) housed at 5 facilities in a 7.4 square mile area died between August 1998 and January 1999. Clinical signs consisted of muscular weakness that rapidly progressed to lateral recumbency. Ten animals had paresis of the tongue, throat, or lips. Affected animals appeared alert and were interested in eating and drinking, even while recumbent. All 13 animals were euthanatized. Clostridium botulinum type C was isolated

Brachydactyly, a possible inherited anomaly at prehistoric Prince Rupert Harbour.

Disproportionately short metacarpals or metatarsals in eight burial skeletons and three unusually short metapodials recovered as disturbed bones were identified in a 1500 B.C. to A.D. 500 skeletal series from eight archeological sites of the north mainland coast of British Columbia, Canada. At least ten people were affected from four sites for a minimum series frequency of 5.2%. Various factors clinically implicated in the occurrence of brachymetapody were investigated to account for the anomaly. Context-sensitive information suggested that trauma, infarction or infection, and individual or fa

Modelling the impact of stigmatisation of Ebola survivors on the disease transmission dynamics.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is one of the most highly stigmatised diseases in any affected country because of the disease's high infectivity and case fatality rate. Infected individuals and most especially survivors are often stigmatised by their communities for fear of contagion. We propose and analyse a mathematical model to examine the impact of stigmatisation of Ebola survivors on the disease dynamics. The model captures both the internal stigmatisation experienced by infected individuals after witnessing survivors being stigmatised and the external stigmatisation imposed on survivors by the
