Mononuclear cells were eluted from synovial membranes of 39 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 12 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. A considerable cell loss, about 50% or more, was seen during the various isolation steps. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the T lymphocyte subgroups and the levels of serum zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) in patients with diarrhea type of irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS).
METHODS: A total of 30 D-IBS patients and 30 control subjects were enrolled in this study, and their peripheral blood samples were collected. The percentage of peripheral CD3, CD4, CD8 T lymphocytes were analyzed by flow cytometry, and the ratio of CD4/CD8 was calculated. The TCR repertoire and the CD4/CD8 ratio of clones from peripheral blood (PB), transbronchial biopsies (TBB), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of 16 sarcoid patients was analyzed by staining the clones with monoclonal antibodies against nine V beta-families. A study was made of changes in the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in patients who had received cadaverous kidneys and who were under treatment with a combination of cyclosporin A + azathioprine + cor ticosteroids. Lymphocytosis in the peripheral blood is a very rare manifestation of thymoma. A 45-year-old man presented with a giant mediastinal mass involving pleural dissemination and peripheral T cell lymphocytosis. Biopsy of the mediastinal mass revealed invasive thymoma, and two-color analysis of peripheral lymphocytes showed a marked increase in CD4+CD8+ double-positive cells. Both thymoma and lymphocytosis were improved by a combination of chemotherapy and mediastinal irradiation.
