Integration of Complexed Caffeic Acid into Poly(Lactic Acid)-Based Biopolymer Blends by Supercritical CO2-Assisted Impregnation and Foaming: Processing, Structural and Thermal Characterization.

Conventional techniques for incorporating active ingredients into polymeric matrices are accompanied by certain disadvantages, primarily attributable to the inherent characteristics of the active ingredient itself, including its sensitivity to temperature. A potential solution to these challenges lies in the utilization of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) for the formation of polymeric foam and the incorporation of active ingredients, in conjunction with the encapsulation of inclusion complexes (ICs), to ensure physical stability and augmented bioactivity. The objective of this study was t

Caffeic acid ameliorates intestinal barrier injury to attenuate acute pancreatitis via inhibiting GSDMD-mediated pyroptotic pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common and critical disease in clinical practice. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Danshen), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in the clinical treatment of AP due to its ability to regulate inflammatory factors, prevent oxidation, and improve microcirculation, achieving certain therapeutic effects. In recent years, most research on the active ingredients of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge for the treatment of AP has focused on fat-soluble components such as tanshinone, while water-soluble components, such as phenolic acids have been

A self-healing micellar hydrogel system for controlled release of caffeic acid phenethyl ester and durable inhibition of prostate tumor.

Hydrogel-encapsulation allows slow and stable delivery of drugs with short half-lives, avoiding the undesired side effects of high-dose or frequent administration of drugs. We previously reported that gavage or injection of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) at 10-15 mg/kg, 2-3 times per week effectively repressed the tumor growth of human prostate xenografts in nude mice. However, daily oral or injectable delivery of CAPE in prostate cancer (PCa) patients may be impractical due to forgetfulness, physical limitations, or treatment fatigue. To overcome these challenges, we developed a hydrogel

Caffeic acid modulates intestinal microbiota, alleviates inflammatory response, and enhances barrier function in a piglet model challenged with lipopolysaccharide.

Young animals are highly susceptible to intestinal damage due to incomplete intestinal development, making them vulnerable to external stimuli. Weaning stress in piglets, for instance, disrupts the balance of intestinal microbiota and metabolism, triggering intestinal inflammation and resulting in gut damage. Caffeic acid (CA), a plant polyphenol, can potentially improve intestinal health. Here, we evaluated the effects of dietary CA on the intestinal barrier and microbiota using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal damage model. Eighteen piglets were divided into three groups: contro

Anti-Neoplastic and Calcium Modulatory Action of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester and Dasatinib in C6 Glial Cells: A Therapeutic Perspective.

Gliomas are often recognized as highly heterogeneous cancerous phenotype. They are perpetually recurrent, obstinately resistant to treatment and hence almost incurable. Drug development studies to date have revealed only modest effect in attenuating growth of these tumors. The present study was aimed at elucidating the potential of targeting glioma through a novel combination of drugs in comparison to single agent. Here, we show that the combined administration of Caffeic acid phenethyl ester [CAPE] and Dasatinib exerts a strong antitumor action on C6 glioma cells. Combinational treatment inhi

Caffeic acid inhibits chromium(VI)-induced oxidative stress and changes in brush border membrane enzymes in rat intestine.

We have previously shown that a single oral dose of potassium dichromate results in a decrease in the activities of several brush border membrane enzymes, produces oxidative stress, and alters the activities of several antioxidant enzymes in the small intestine of rats. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of treatment with the dietary antioxidant caffeic acid on potassium dichromate-induced biochemical changes in the rat intestine. Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, potassium dichromate alone, caffeic acid alone, and potassium dichromate +

Caffeic Acid Phenylethyl Ester and MG-132 Have Apoptotic and Antiproliferative Effects on Leukemic Cells But Not on Normal Mononuclear Cells.

Chemotherapy aims to limit proliferation and induce apoptotic cell death in tumor cells. Owing to blockade of signaling pathways involved in cell survival and proliferation, nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) inhibitors can induce apoptosis in a number of hematological malignancies. The efficacy of conventional chemotherapeutic drugs, such as vincristine (VCR) and doxorubicine (DOX), may be enhanced with combined therapy based on NF-kappaB modulation. In this study, we evaluated the effect of caffeic acid phenylethyl ester (CAPE) and MG-132, two nonspecific NF-kappaB inhibitors, and conventiona

Microwave-induced complexation between sorghum starch and caffeic acid: Structural modulation and its impact on digestive and retrogradation properties.

Microwave-assisted technology offers an efficient and eco-friendly method for starch modification. In this study, sorghum starch (SS) was treated under varying microwave durations and complexed with caffeic acid (CA) to form SS-CA complexes. Microwave treatment significantly reduced crystallinity (24.07 % to 3.51 %), disrupted short-range order, and caused granule swelling, aggregation, and decreased thermal stability. Complexation induced a V-type inclusion structure. The SS-CA (120 s) complex showed a 9.17 % reduction in rapidly digestible starch (RDS) and a 14.40 % increase in resistant sta
