Contribution to the physicochemical rationale for the caries reducing effect of fluoride.

The effect of fluoride on the stability of apatites containing Na+ and CO3(2)- ions is described qualitatively. Also the boundaries of the apatite stability field in the quasi-septary system CaO - P2O5 - H2O - Na2O - CO2 - NaF - MX are presented. At these boundaries brushite (or monetite), octocalciumphosphate, calcite and calcium fluoride can become stable solid phases. As a consequence, certain mechanisms for the caries reducing effect of fluoride gain probability over other proposed mechanisms. First, it is likely that endemic fluoride yields more fully mineralized enamel which in turn resu

The effect of fluoride on bone histology in postmenopausal osteoporosis depends on adequate fluoride absorption and retention.

Forty-one women with idiopathic postmenopausal osteoporosis have been followed for 2 years after initiation of sodium fluoride at 40-50 mg/day, given together with a daily calcium supplement of 1 gram and vitamin D2, at 50,000 IU weekly. Histological and histomorphometric analyses were done on bone biopsies taken prior to and after 1 year of treatment (mean 1.25 +/- 0.35 years). Thirty patients (74%) developed the histological fluoride effect of hyperosteoidosis, while the remaining 11 patients (26%) had no change from pretreatment biopsies. Hyperosteoidosis was based on increased values for o

ER stress promoted MAMs formation and ER-Mito Ca2+ transfer: implication for fluoride-induced hippocampal neuronal injury and cognitive deficits in mice.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are crucial contributors to the pathophysiological progression of fluorosis. Recently, the disturbance of the linked membrane microdomains between ER and mitochondria (ER-derived mitochondria-associated membranes, MAMs) has been implicated in fluoride toxicity. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the involvement of MAMs in fluoride neurotoxicity, specifically by examining how MAMs regulate ER-mitochondria crosstalk and contribute to subsequent hippocampal damage and cognitive dysfunction. In the current investigation, our expe

Onsite defluoridation system for drinking water treatment using calcium carbonate.

Fluoride in drinking water has several effects on teeth and bones. At concentrations of 1-1.5 mg/L, fluoride can strengthen enamel, improving dental health, but at concentrations above 1.5 to 4 mg/L can cause dental fluorosis. At concentrations of 4-10 mg/L, skeletal fluorosis can occur. There are many areas of the world that have excessive fluoride in drinking water, such as China, India, Sri Lanka, and the Rift Valley countries in Africa. Treatment solutions are needed, especially in poor areas where drinking water treatment plants are not available. On-site or individual treatment alternati

The pathophysiological profile of the acute cardiovascular toxicity of sodium fluoride.

The intravenous infusion of sodium fluoride (2 mg/kg X min) into anesthetized rats caused a progressive fall in arterial blood pressure, cardiac output, heart rate and peripheral resistance. Respiratory rate increased during the first 20 min of infusion resulting in increased oxygen and decreased carbon dioxide blood concentrations. Total body oxygen consumption decreased after 30 min of NaF infusion by 29%, whereas the respiratory quotient (RQ) increased from 0.8 to 1.06. Death occurred after a mean dose of 79.6 +/- 4.6 mg/kg NaF. The terminal cardiac event before death was atrioventricular b

Multi-technique computational assessment of fluoride uptake in enamel using PIGE, NEXAFS, and Raman spectroscopy.

The uptake of fluoride in the enamel matrix is an effective strategy to prevent demineralization and caries formation. In this study a comprehensive methodology is developed to evaluate and understand the uptake of fluoride in human enamel. Twenty-six healthy anterior teeth were sectioned in half; one half remained untreated, while the other was treated with 50 mg mL-1 NaF (equivalent to 22.6 mg of fluoride) through three 1-minute applications over a 12-day period, following the manufacturer's guidelines. Fluoride uptake was quantified with particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE), revealing

Hydrated Electron-Driven Defluorination Coupled With In Situ Mineralization: An Integrated Approach for SF6 Degradation and Fluoride Immobilization.

The extreme atmospheric persistence of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), coupled with its high global warming potential, necessitates effective degradation strategies. Herein, we report a reduction-precipitation platform that simultaneously achieves SF6 defluorination and in situ fluoride immobilization. Hydrated electrons ( e aq - $e_{aq}^{-}$ ) generated via photoreduction drive the cleavage of SF bonds, achieving enhanced SF6 degradation. Crucially, in situ precipitation with calcium salts directly converts the released fluoride ions into fluorite (CaF2), eliminating secondary pollution. XRD

New Preventive Approaches Part I: Functional Peptides and Other Therapies to Prevent Tooth Demineralization.

The limited effect of fluoride on root caries has prompted the study of new preventive therapies, which involve recently developed functional peptides, lasers, phosphate-based technologies, among several other approaches. Most of the specific peptides currently investigated have been developed based on the available information related to the protective action of salivary proteins, including statherin-derived peptides. Other peptides include 8DSS, self-assembling peptide P11-4, antimicrobial peptides, and casein phosphopeptides combined with amorphous calcium phosphate. These were shown to inc

Fluoride content of toothpastes available in South Africa.

UNLABELLED: A high dental caries burden coupled with a lack of water or salt fluoridation make it imperative that toothpastes available to the South African consumer demonstrate adequate potential for caries control and contain between 1000ppm and 1500ppm total fluoride (TF), with at least 1000ppm F in free available/soluble form. METHODS: The objective was to determine TF, total soluble fluoride (TSF) and insoluble fluoride (IF) concentrations in 22 fluoride toothpastes commercially available in South Africa. Samples were purchased from a major pharmaceutical and food retailer located in the

Detection of multivessel calcific disease progression in a patient with chronic limb-threatening ischemia using fluorine-18 sodium fluoride positron emission tomography imaging.

Vascular calcification contributes to morbidity and poor clinical outcomes for patients with peripheral artery disease; however, the traditional assessment of the calcium burden using computed tomography (CT) imaging or angiography represents already established disease. In the present report, we describe a 69-year-old man with chronic limb-threatening ischemia who had undergone positron emission tomography/CT imaging with fluorine-18 sodium fluoride to evaluate the relationship between baseline levels of positron emission tomography-detectable active vascular microcalcification and CT-detecta
