Analytical "bake-off" of whole genome sequencing quality for the Genome Russia project using a small cohort for autoimmune hepatitis.

A comparative analysis of whole genome sequencing (WGS) and genotype calling was initiated for ten human genome samples sequenced by St. Petersburg State University Peterhof Sequencing Center and by three commercial sequencing centers outside of Russia. The sequence quality, efficiency of DNA variant and genotype calling were compared with each other and with DNA microarrays for each of ten study subjects. We assessed calling of SNPs, indels, copy number variation, and the speed of WGS throughput promised. Twenty separate QC analyses showed high similarities among the sequence quality and call

Burnout and Career Calling Profiles Among Nurses: Associations With Nursing Work Environment and Missed Nursing Care.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are highly prone to burnout due to high pressure, heavy workloads, and emotional labor. Career calling has been associated with lower levels of burnout, but variable-centered studies have overlooked heterogeneous subgroups among nurses. OBJECTIVE: This person-centered study used latent profile analysis to jointly examine career calling and burnout, identify burnout-career calling profiles, and explore factors associated with these profiles and their associations with self-reported missed nursing care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to September 2

An epidemic and a pandemic collide: Assessing the feasibility of tobacco treatment among vulnerable groups at COVID-19 protective lodging.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experiencing homelessness have elevated smoking rates in addition to chronic and acute physical and mental health conditions, which may increase chances for complications associated with COVID-19 recovery. Unfortunately, there is underuse of tobacco cessation services in many agencies (e.g., substance use treatment centers, mental health treatment centers) providing care to these individuals. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of providing tobacco cessation treatment alongside local COVID-19 emergency response efforts. METHOD: Taking Tex

Evidence Map of Non-Pharmacological Dementia Care Partner Interventions Implemented in the US: Gaps and Impact Opportunities.

There are 200+ tested interventions for care partners (family, friends, and fictive kin) of people living with dementia (PLWD). But these interventions do not systematically cover relevant settings. Nor do these interventions affect all relevant outcomes that matter to people and healthcare systems. We present an evidence map of settings and outcomes from translated interventions to identify gaps. Of 190 studies identified, 31 unique interventions were retained in the evidence map. Identified setting gaps included studies set solely in hospitals/medical centers or set in multiple settings. Ide

Pesticide poisoning surveillance through regional poison control centers.

The purpose of this study is to describe pesticide exposure in the population of callers to Minnesota Regional Poison Centers. Case files from 1988 reporting pesticide exposure to humans were identified in cooperation with the Minnesota Center for Health Statistics. Data analysis was conducted by computer using SAS statistical package. Of the 1,428 case files indicating pesticide as the primary substance of exposure to Minnesota residents, a mean age of 5 years (range, one month to 85 years) was identified; 50 percent of all cases were below age 3 years. Males accounted for 1.3 times as many c

Availability of Extragenital Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Testing in 6 High-Incidence States.

BACKGROUND: Extragenital testing (rectal and oropharyngeal) of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) increases the detection of CT/NG infections, compared with genital testing alone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual extragenital CT/NG screening for men who have sex with men, and additional screenings for women and transgender or gender-diverse individuals if certain sexual behaviors and exposures are reported. METHODS: Prospective computer-assisted telephonic interviews were conducted with 873 clinics between June 2022 and September 2022. Th

A Modified Sonographic Algorithm for Image Acquisition in Life-Threatening Emergencies in the Critically Ill Newborn.

The use of routine point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasing in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), with several centers advocating for 24 h equipment availability. In 2018, the sonographic algorithm for life-threatening emergencies (SAFE) protocol was published, which allows the assessment of neonates with sudden decompensation to identify abnormal contractility, tamponade, pneumothorax, and pleural effusion. In the study unit (with a consulting neonatal hemodynamics and POCUS service), the algorithm was adapted by including consolidated core steps to support at-risk newborns, aiding

Behaviorally Informed Text Messaging to Promote Colon Cancer Screening: A Quality Improvement Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Colorectal cancer screening rates in the US remain suboptimal, particularly among low-income and minoritized populations, despite the availability of effective, low-cost options such as the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). Scalable outreach strategies are needed to improve uptake and reduce staff burden in safety-net settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a behavioral economics-informed, automated text messaging strategy was associated with increased FIT completion compared with nurse-led telephone call outreach. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This quality improvement rando

Demand Shock Exposes Surgical Training Problem: What Bariatric Volume Collapse Reveals About the Future of Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Training.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) volume has contracted sharply in the era of GLP-1 receptor agonists, exposing a mismatch among residency competence, MIS fellowship structure, and bariatric workforce demand. Therefore, we propose that core MIS and robotic competence should move into residency training under enforceable ACGME and American Board of Surgery (ABS) standards, while remaining fellowships train multifaceted MIS surgeons with additional bariatric depth rather than bariatric-only specialists. In this Viewpoint, we call for three reforms: MIS and robotic credentialing within reside
