Detection of arsenic, mercury, cadmium and lead compounds in Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae and their potential impact on larval development.

Heavy metal exposure represents a substantial health risk to humans and other animals, in some cases leading to death. However, detecting these metals in decaying corpses can pose a considerable challenge. In such situations, the eventual presence of necrophagous insects feeding on the remains may serve as a valuable tool for detecting and measuring these toxic substances. Nonetheless, heavy metals might affect insect development and survival rates. This study explored the effects of increasing concentrations of arsenic, mercury, cadmium and lead compounds on the survival and development rate

Homeopathic Pyrogenium Ointment as Adjuvant in Treatment of Traumatic and Infected Myiasis by Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Sheep: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The blowfly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) causes traumatic myiasis in farm animals, with deeply embedded larvae that lead to serious tissue damage and sometimes death. Treating this form of myiasis is difficult, often resulting in poor outcomes. As a homeopathic preparation that can mimic traumatic myiasis symptoms, Pyrogenium could potentially supplement treatment. This study aimed to describe the adjuvant effect that a Pyrogenium ointment might have in the treatment of sheep with traumatic myiasis. PATIENTS: The study reports a homeopathic adjuvant treatment w

The bioefficacy of crude extracts of Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) on the survival and development of myiasis-causing larvae of Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Myiasis is a type of parasitosis originating from the invasion of tissues of live humans and other vertebrates by dipteran larvae. The Old World screwworm fly—Chrysomya bezziana—is known worldwide in the tropical regions for causing myiasis among man and domestic animals, thereby leading to health hazards and severe economic losses to the dairy farmers. Management techniques for controlling populations of the fly are needed to minimize these losses. Plant-derived materials have been increasingly evaluated these days in controlling the insects of medical and veterinary importance. This study ev

Revision of the frog fly genus Caiusa Surcouf, 1920 (Diptera, Calliphoridae), with a note on the identity of Plinthomyia emimelania Rondani, 1875.

The Oriental, Australasian and Oceanian genus Caiusa Surcouf, 1920 is revised, species concepts being based on male and female genitalia. A key to males for all known species, and a key to females for all except one are given. All relevant types still in existence have been studied, complete synonymies given and the geographical distribution reconsidered. The eight species included in the genus are: Caiusa borneoensis sp. nov. (Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam); Caiusa coomani Séguy, 1948 (China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam); Caiusa indica Surcouf, 1920 (Australia, Cambodia, India, Indon

Changes in the frequency of the G137D and W251S mutations in the carboxylesterase E3 gene of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) populations from Uruguay.

The New World Screwworm (NWS) fly Cochliomyia hominivorax is one of most important myiasis-causing flies in the Neotropics. It is responsible for severe losses to the livestock industry through both mortality and the loss of productivity of infested animals. In Uruguay, NWS represents a significant problem. To date this pest has been controlled by the application of chemical insecticides, mainly the pyrethroid and organophosphate (OP) classes. However, the intensive use of these compounds over many years has led to the evolution of resistance which has the potential to compromise the effective

Changes in blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) wing morphology during succession in rat carcasses across forest and grassland habitats in South Brazil.

Succession is one of the most extensively studied ecological phenomena, yet debates persist about the importance of dispersal and external factors in driving this process. We aimed to quantify the influence of these factors by investigating how wing-related traits evolve across succession of blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) communities in South Brazil. Rat carrion was placed in both forest and grassland habitats, and the associated blowfly communities were documented throughout the decomposition process. Using morphometric analysis, we measured wing and thorax traits and assessed trait changes

Prevalence of blaCTX-M and Emergence of blaCTX-M-5-Carrying Escherichia coli in Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Northern Thailand.

This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) among blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala) populations in Northern Thailand. Of 600 blow flies collected from rural (n = 400) and urban (n = 200) areas, 334 blow flies carried ESBL-EC (55.7%). Prevalence of ESBL-EC in blow flies captured from rural areas was significantly higher than that from urban region (72.5% vs. 22.0%, p < 0.001). Susceptibility tests revealed that 68.6% of ESBL-EC possessed multidrug-resistant phenotypes. Coresistance to gentamicin (85%) was common,

Molecular identification of Cordylobia anthropophaga Blanchard (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae collected from dogs (Canis familiaris) in Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Myiasis-causing larvae were extracted from dogs attending veterinary clinics in Plateau State, Nigeria and subjected to molecular analysis involving polymerase chain reaction amplification of the 28S rRNA gene of blowflies, cloning and sequencing techniques. All larvae were confirmed as Cordylobia anthropophaga Blanchard (Diptera: Calliphoridae) after the initial morphological identification. This is the first molecular identification of any myiasis-causing fly species in Nigeria and may serve as a reliable alternative to morphological identification where samples are not well preserved or dif

Responses of fertile and sterile screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) flies to bovine blood inoculated with bacteria originating from screwworm-infested animal wounds.

ABSTRACT A simple bioassay system was developed to study locomotory and ovipositional responses of screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), flies to bovine blood inoculated with eight species of coliform bacteria that were isolated from screwworm-infested animal wounds. When exposed to odors from bacteria-inoculated blood which was incubated for 72 h at 37 degrees C, approximately 50% of 7- and 10-d-old gravid females landed on the blood by the end of 15 min test exposure. Only 17% of 7-d-old reproductively sterile females (from irradiated pupae) with previtellogenic ovaries and 2% of 4-

Evaluation of plant species used traditionally to treat myiasis for activity on the survival and development of Lucilia cuprina and Chrysomya marginalis (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Myiasis is a common parasitic problem of livestock responsible for severe economic losses in developing and developed countries. There are a number of challenges with the current control strategy, which depends largely on the use of pharmaceutical chemicals. These include inaccessibility, the increasing concern about pesticide accumulation in the environment and potential development of insecticide resistance in the devastating myiasis-causing flies. Consequently the search for alternatives is important. The use of plants in the treatment of wound myiasis in livestock as an alternative to comm

First report of human myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya rufifacies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Thailand, and its implication in forensic entomology.

We report a forensic entomology case associated with human myiasis in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. The remains of a 53-yr-old-male were concurrently infested with third instars of the two blow fly species, Chrysomya megacephala (F.) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), near a severe tumor lesion presented on the lower right leg. The presence of third instars, approximately 5 d old, on the day following postmortem indicated that myiasis occurred before death. This is the first report of both fly species acting as a myiasis-producing agent in Thailand. Unsynchronized data between the

Development of a standardized routine workflow for entomological and toxicological analysis using larvae of two forensically relevant fly species (Diptera, Calliphoridae).

For more than four decades, no standardized study design or workflow has been established for systematic entomotoxicological research in forensic casework. This study aimed to develop a universal rearing protocol for fly larvae grown on drug-spiked tissue surrogate and a standardized workflow for the qualitative analysis of pharmacologically active compounds (PACs) in insects of different developmental stages. Larvae of Protophormia terraenovae and Lucilia sericata were reared on minced meat serving as tissue surrogate. First-instar larvae were transferred to minced meat spiked with diazepam,

Using ecological niche models to describe the geographical distribution of the myiasis-causing Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in southern South America.

In southern South America, namely Argentina and Chile, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) is the main myiasic agent on humans and domestic animals. The distribution pattern of the species is poorly known and the southern limit of its geographic distribution is unclear. The aims of this study are to elucidate the basic environmental factors associated with occurrence of this myiasic species, evaluation of models constructed on the basis of occurrence data based on adult specimen records to predict geographic occurrence of myiasis, evaluation of unsurveyed sites of high potential of occurrence o

Exogenous and endogenous microbiomes of wild-caught Phormia regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) flies from a suburban farm by 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

The black blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most abundant carrion flies in North America. Calliphorids are important in agriculture and animal production, veterinary sciences, forensics and medical entomology. While the role of flies in the epidemiology of human and animal diseases is an active area of research, little is known about the microorganisms associated with these insects. We examined the diversity of wild-caught black blow fly endogenous (internal body) and exogenous (external body) microbial communities using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Overall,

Effect of juvenoids pyriproxyfen and diofenolan on embryogenesis and postembryonic development of blow fly Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) following egg treatment.

The blow fly Chrysomya megacephala is a serious medico-veterinary pest causing myiasis in humans and animals apart from transmitting various disease-causing pathogens. Being an economically important pest, it warrants successful control in the early stages without affecting the host, environment, and non-target organisms. Juvenoids being safe, species and stage selective, biodegradable, and harmless to beneficial non-target organisms. Treatment of freshly laid eggs of C. megacephala with juvenoids pyriproxyfen and diofenolan (50 and 100 μg/cm(2)) by contact method for 1-60 min severely deraile

Factors affecting abundance and oviposition rates of a field population of the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Sentinel cattle and a grid of swormlure-baited sticky traps were used to monitor a Malaysian population of the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve. Observations were carried out on an isolated cattle station at monthly intervals during the period August 1996 to June 2000. The number of flies caught was unaffected by weather conditions at the time of trapping, but was positively correlated with the total rainfall and the average daily air temperature prevailing 15-28 days earlier, when trapped flies were still juveniles. Trap catches were biased in favour of females, but dai
